Fix incorrect colors on a laptop screen by turning off night modes and color filters, then checking display presets, HDR, color profiles, and graphics drivers. Start with the fix that matches what you see, such as a yellow tint, grayscale, inverted colors, or washed-out video.

The Windows steps use Windows 11 menus. MacBook and Chromebook steps cover their built-in settings, while laptop brand utilities depend on your model.

The short version

  • Warm or yellow colors: Turn off night modes and scheduled eye-care features.
  • Grayscale or inverted colors: Disable accessibility color filters and contrast effects.
  • Washed-out or oversaturated images: Check HDR, display presets, and color profiles before calibrating.
  • Persistent distortion: Reset the graphics driver, restart, and run hardware diagnostics if settings do not help.

Correct the viewing angle and turn off night modes

Sit directly in front of your laptop and adjust its screen angle before changing color settings. Some laptop displays change color and contrast with the viewing angle, so assess the image from your normal sitting position.

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Night light, then select Turn off now. Turn off Schedule night light too, so the warm tint does not return automatically.

On a MacBook, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Displays > Night Shift. Set Schedule to Off and turn off the active manual setting. Back in Displays, select your display and turn off True Tone if available to compare its appearance without automatic color adjustment.

On a Chromebook, select the time, then open Settings > Device > Displays. Turn off Night Light and set Schedule to Never. If the colors remain wrong, check accessibility effects next.

Remove grayscale and inverted color effects

On Windows 11, open Settings > Accessibility > Color filters and turn off Color filters. When enabled, the shortcut Windows + Ctrl + C also toggles the filter. Turn off Keyboard shortcut for color filters to prevent accidental activation.

For unusually stark interface colors, open Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes, choose None, then select Apply. If Magnifier is running with inverted colors, press Ctrl + Alt + I to reverse the inversion, or press Windows + Esc to close Magnifier.

On a Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Display. Turn off Invert colors, then scroll to Color Filters and turn off Color filters.

On a Chromebook, select the time and open Settings > Accessibility > Display and magnification. Turn off Color correction and Color inversion.

Restore a neutral laptop display preset

Your laptop's color utility can apply its own saturation or eye-care settings. On supported ASUS laptops, open MyASUS > Device Settings > Splendid and select Normal. If you also have Color Gamut controls, choose sRGB for web content.

On supported MSI laptops, press Fn + Z to open MSI True Color and select sRGB for web images. On supported Samsung laptops, open Start > All apps > Samsung Settings > Display > Auto mode, then select Natural (sRGB).

Select Start to open the Windows Start menu.
Select Start to open the Windows Start menu.

On Lenovo models offering this control, open Lenovo Vantage > Device Settings > Display and disable Eye care mode. On equipped LG laptops, press Fn + F9 until Reader Mode is Off. Skip controls your model does not offer.

On supported Dell Optimizer 6.x systems, open Dell Optimizer > Display > Color Profiles and turn the feature off to compare. Dell has retired MyDell and CinemaColor, with replacement controls available through Dell Optimizer on supported systems.

Correct HDR and automatic brightness changes

On an HDR-capable Windows 11 laptop, open Settings > System > Display, select the affected display, and switch HDR off. Compare the same content with HDR disabled. If its appearance improves, adjust HDR before changing the display's overall calibration.

To keep HDR enabled, open Settings > System > Display > HDR and adjust SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness, depending on which control appears. Restart the affected apps afterward. For supported SDR games being converted to HDR, expand HDR and turn off Auto HDR to compare the original presentation.

If brightness or contrast changes with the content, open Settings > System > Display > Brightness and set Change brightness based on content to Off, if available. On supported AMD laptops, open AMD Software, search for Display, and open Display Settings. Disable Vari-Bright if the appearance changes on battery power.

Fix colors that are wrong in only one app

If your desktop looks normal but webpages do not, check the browser before changing the laptop's color profile. In Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions and switch off color, contrast, or dark-mode extensions individually. Remove the extension responsible for the unwanted effect.

For a browser-only rendering problem, open Chrome's More > Settings > System and turn off Use graphics acceleration when available. Restart Chrome and compare the affected content. If disabling acceleration makes no difference, turn it back on and continue with the driver checks.

In Firefox, open Menu > Help > Troubleshoot Mode…. Select Restart, then Open, and compare the webpage with extensions, themes, and hardware acceleration temporarily disabled. If colors return to normal, disable the responsible extension under Extensions and themes > Extensions, or restore System under Themes.

If Firefox's hardware acceleration is responsible, open Menu > Settings > General, or Tabs and browsing where shown, then find Performance. Uncheck Use recommended performance settings, then uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available. Quit and reopen Firefox.

Restart and repair the graphics driver

For sudden scrambling or flickering on Windows, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. Restart your computer if the display remains incorrect. If it has stopped responding, follow the steps to restart an unresponsive computer.

Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart when requested. To find and update your graphics driver, right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, then right-click the adapter and select Update driver. Choose the automatic search option and follow the prompts.

If you have downloaded a matching driver from your laptop or graphics hardware manufacturer, select Browse my computer for drivers instead. Select Browse..., choose the downloaded driver folder, then select OK and Next. The package must match your hardware and Windows architecture.

If the problem began after a graphics-driver update, open the adapter's Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. Choose a reason, select Yes, and restart if requested. Rollback requires administrator access and an available previous driver.

If updating or rolling back does not help, save your work and return to Device Manager > Display adapters. Right-click the affected adapter, select Uninstall device, then select Uninstall and restart. Windows attempts to reinstall the driver, and administrator permissions may be required.

On a Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install the offered compatible update. Follow the update and restart prompts, entering the administrator password if requested. On a Chromebook, select the time and open Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. Allow the download, then select Restart when offered.

Correct the color profile and calibration

On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Color profile and select the affected display. Select Set profile to choose the appropriate installed profile. To remove an unwanted profile you can identify, expand it and select Remove.

If colors still need balancing, select Calibrate display and complete the wizard. Alternatively, search Windows for Calibrate display color, open it, and follow the prompts to balance colors, mid-tones, contrast, and brightness. Calibration creates a display profile, so complete it after turning off unwanted filters and presets.

On a Mac, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the display, and choose the appropriate Color profile or content-matching Preset. On displays using Color profile, select Customize, then the Add button. Complete Display Calibrator Assistant to create the calibration.

Supported 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models from 2021 onward use Pro Display Calibrator instead. To undo a custom calibration on a supported display, select it in Displays, then choose Preset > Calibrate Display > Reset All to restore factory calibration.

Check the hardware when colors remain incorrect

Connect a known-good external monitor with a compatible cable to compare the images. On Windows, press Windows + P and select Duplicate or Extend. A difference between screens helps narrow the problem, but does not conclusively identify a failed component.

If the connected monitor has a green cast, follow the steps to fix a green monitor tint while checking that display's own picture controls. External monitors have model-specific color menus, separate from your laptop's built-in panel settings.

On a Dell laptop, shut down, disconnect peripherals, and connect AC power. Hold D, press Power, then release D when the solid-color screens appear. Inspect each screen and press Esc to stop.

If you see incorrect colors, lines, dark regions, or damage during Dell's LCD self-test, the screen may need professional service. Record the symptoms and any error indicators, then contact Dell Technical Support to discuss repair options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are colors wrong only in Photoshop?

Your document preview may have proof colors or gamut warnings enabled. Open View and turn off Proof Colors or Gamut Warning when the corresponding option is checked. These controls affect the document preview rather than the laptop's panel calibration.

Why does the NVIDIA app have no controls for my laptop screen?

Your laptop's internal display may be driven by integrated graphics rather than the NVIDIA GPU. NVIDIA display controls are available only for screens that its GPU drives. On many hybrid laptops, you need the integrated GPU's controls for the built-in panel.

How can I calibrate an HDR display separately?

Use Microsoft's Windows HDR Calibration app on supported Windows 11 HDR hardware. Enable HDR, then open Start > All apps > Windows HDR Calibration. Run it full screen on the affected display and adjust each test until its pattern disappears. Keep saturation near the default unless adjustment is needed.

Why do my laptop colors change when I unplug it?

Your Windows laptop can turn HDR off on battery power. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > HDR, expand HDR, and uncheck Turn off HDR when my PC is running on battery. This option applies to HDR-capable laptops.

Can f.lux keep colors warm after I disable Night Shift?

Yes, f.lux has separate color controls that can keep your screen warm. On a Mac, open the f.lux menu and choose Disable > For an hour or Until sunrise to compare the screen without its warm colors.
