Check carrier access and mobile data
For a Galaxy phone or cellular tablet, ask your carrier to verify hotspot eligibility, account standing, and provisioning, especially after changing carriers. Have a damaged SIM replaced. If devices connect but cannot get online, ask the carrier to check your remaining tethering allowance, which can be separate from other mobile data.
T-Mobile customers can get T-Life through its official app page. Sign in only through T-Mobile’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you. Open T-Life, sign in, and select the Account tab (previously Manage) to access usage information; confirm your hotspot allowance with support if the display does not distinguish it.
On Pixel, open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs, then enable Mobile data and the selected carrier’s Use SIM. Turn Wi-Fi off to check cellular service. Move to better coverage and ask your carrier about outages if cellular service is still failing.
Restart the hotspot connection
On Galaxy, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering, then turn Mobile Hotspot off and back on. If that does not help, open Quick settings, select the Power icon, and tap Restart. Tap Restart again to confirm.
For Pixel cellular connection trouble, open Settings > Network & Internet and turn Airplane mode on and off. Alternatively, power the phone off completely, wait 30 seconds, then turn it on again.
With an iPhone or cellular iPad hotspot, restart both the device providing Personal Hotspot and the device trying to connect. Retry the connection afterward, then check discovery and credentials if the receiving device still cannot join.
Make the hotspot visible and check its password
On Galaxy models with these controls, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot > Information. Check Network name and Password. Under Advanced, turn off Hidden network to make the hotspot discoverable. Available controls vary by software and carrier.
On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. Enable Wi-Fi hotspot, check its name and password, and reconnect from the receiving device. Google notes that some of these instructions require Android 14 or later.
Pixel Wi-Fi tethering requires you to turn off Data Saver. Open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver, then turn off Use Data Saver. Retry the hotspot connection afterward.
For an iPhone or Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad with a supporting carrier plan, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and enable Allow Others to Join. Stay on that screen while connecting. On the receiving device, turn Wi-Fi off and on, select the correct hotspot, and enter the displayed password.
Adjust compatibility or connect with USB
On Galaxy models exposing the band control, open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot > Information. Under Band, choose 2.4 GHz for broader compatibility; 5 GHz favors performance. In hotspot settings that expose the security control, choose WPA2 under Security for compatibility.
Apple warns that enabling Maximize Compatibility may decrease performance and Wi-Fi security. On iPhone 12 or later, open Settings > Personal Hotspot, enable Maximize Compatibility, and reconnect. You can also use this setting on the 11-inch iPad Pro third generation and later, 12.9-inch iPad Pro fifth generation and later, and iPad mini sixth generation.
For USB tethering on a compatible Galaxy and computer, connect a data-capable USB cable, then open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Enable USB tethering. That control is unavailable until the phone detects the cable.
Install software and carrier updates
On Galaxy, open Settings > Software update > Download and install. Carrier variants use Settings > System updates > Check for software updates instead. The updates offered depend on your model, region, and carrier.
Before updating an iPhone or iPad, back it up and connect it to power and Wi-Fi. Open Settings > General > Software Update, then tap Download and Install when an update is offered. If the update requests temporary app removal, proceeding will temporarily remove apps. Tap Continue only if that is acceptable.
A carrier settings update is especially relevant after changing a SIM or eSIM on iPhone or cellular iPad. Connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service, then open Settings > General > About. Select Update when offered, or select OK for a notification that a mandatory update has already been installed.
Check for Galaxy app interference
If your Galaxy uses a VPN, temporarily disable the VPN service and retry the hotspot. The disconnect control depends on the VPN app. If the problem continues, check whether the hotspot works in Safe mode.
Open the power menu, hold Power off, then tap Safe mode and retry the hotspot. If it works there, a recently installed app may be interfering. Uninstalling removes the selected app. Hold that app’s icon, tap Uninstall, then tap OK; restart and retry the hotspot after each removal.
Repair a Windows hotspot connection
When a Windows 11 PC provides the hotspot, open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot. Under Share my internet connection from, select the working internet connection, then choose Wi-Fi or Bluetooth under Share over. Enable Mobile hotspot.
To check its credentials or band, open Settings > Network & internet > Mobile hotspot > Properties > Edit. Set the network name, password, and band, then select Save.
For a Windows 11 PC that cannot join a hotspot, run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. If you still need to reconnect, forgetting the hotspot removes its saved connection. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the hotspot, and select Forget. Reconnect using its current password.
Install available Windows updates before moving to a network reset. Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install the updates, and restart.
Check a dedicated NETGEAR hotspot
These steps apply to NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 and M6 Pro models MR6110, MR6150, MR6400, MR6450, MR6500, and MR6550. Hold Power for five seconds, then tap Restart. If the hotspot is overheating, move it out of sunlight and onto a ventilated surface, because overheating can reduce connectivity or shut it down.
To inspect dashboard alerts, connect locally and log in to the admin interface at http://192.168.1.1 using the admin password. For a SIM Locked alert, obtain the correct PIN from your carrier, enter it, and select Apply.
Check firmware from the hotspot’s touchscreen by opening Settings > More > Software. Tap Check for updates now, then tap Update now when an update is available.
Reset the affected network settings
Use a targeted reset after the earlier fixes fail. Current Galaxy and Pixel software separates cellular settings from Wi-Fi settings, so choose the reset for the connection having trouble.
A Galaxy mobile network reset resets cellular settings. Open Settings > General management > Reset > Reset mobile network settings, tap Reset settings, then tap Reset.
Resetting Galaxy Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings means reconnecting saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth accessories afterward. For that connection-side reset, open Settings > General management > Reset > Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, then tap Reset settings.
On current Pixel software, a mobile network reset resets cellular configuration. Open Settings > System > Reset options and choose Reset mobile network settings for cellular faults. Resetting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi removes saved Wi-Fi connections. For wireless connection faults, choose Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi from the same menu.
On iPhone or cellular iPad, a network reset resets saved Wi-Fi, cellular, VPN, and APN settings. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On iPad, choose Transfer or Reset iPad in that path instead.
A Windows 11 network reset may require you to reconfigure networking software. Open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, select Reset now, then select Yes. If Galaxy hotspot activation still fails after a reset, contact your carrier’s official support for eligibility and provisioning checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Pixel hotspot turn off when nothing is connected?
Your Pixel can shut down its hotspot automatically when it is idle. On models with this control, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot, then disable Turn off hotspot automatically.
Can I use Pixel USB tethering with a Mac?
Google excludes Mac USB tethering from its supported Pixel instructions. Its Bluetooth tethering instructions also exclude Macs running macOS Monterey or later.
Can my Apple devices connect without allowing other people to join?
Same-account Instant Hotspot does not require you to enable Allow Others to Join. On a compatible host, open Settings > Cellular and enable Cellular Data. Keep your compatible devices nearby with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and the same Apple Account signed in, then select the host from the receiving device’s Wi-Fi list.
Should I factory reset my Galaxy to fix a hotspot error?
Keep a factory reset as a last resort because it cannot repair carrier outages or plan restrictions. It erases personal data, so back up first if you decide to proceed after simpler troubleshooting.
Can I make my Galaxy hotspot stay on longer between connections?
On Galaxy models with timeout controls, you can choose a longer idle interval. Open Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering > Mobile Hotspot > Information > Advanced > Turn off when no device connected for, then choose a longer interval.
What if my work device blocks hotspot changes?
Ask your organization’s administrator to review its tethering restrictions. On managed Android devices, the relevant restriction is DISALLOW_CONFIG_TETHERING; on supervised iPhone and iPad devices, ask the administrator to review Modify personal Hotspot settings. On managed Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and applicable IoT editions, ask IT to review Wifi/AllowInternetSharing.
