A black box on your computer screen can come from an app, accessibility panel, gaming overlay, graphics rendering fault, or damaged display. Close the responsible app or panel first, then try resetting Windows graphics with Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B if the rectangle remains. Save your work before restarting, force quitting an app, or changing drivers.

The short version

  • Close the app: Select the affected Windows window and press Alt + F4, or quit the affected Mac app with Command + Q.
  • Reset Windows graphics: Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to address a rendering glitch.
  • Identify the panel: Turn off the specific caption, magnifier, or gaming overlay responsible for the rectangle.
  • Check persistent damage: A dark area visible in hardware test patterns needs manufacturer diagnosis and possible screen repair.

Close the app and refresh the desktop

Select the Windows window that owns the rectangle and press Alt + F4. When closing it removes the box, reopen the app and check its updates, extensions, and overlay settings. Applications can override keyboard shortcuts, so a shortcut that does nothing does not rule out an app problem.

For a rectangle that remains on the Windows desktop, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A beep or brief screen flicker can indicate that Windows responded. This targets graphics rendering glitches; a deliberately displayed caption panel or widget needs its own controls.

Next, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, right-click Windows Explorer, and select Restart. If that process is missing, select Run new task, enter explorer.exe, and press Enter.

On a Mac, quit the affected app with Command + Q. For an unresponsive app, press Option + Command + Esc, select it, and click Force Quit; unsaved work can be lost. For a Finder problem, select Finder in that window and click Relaunch.

Restart when the rectangle survives these quick fixes. On Windows, right-click Start and select Shut down or sign out > Restart; on Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart. If the computer cannot respond, follow the steps to restart an unresponsive computer, keeping in mind that a forced shutdown can discard unsaved work.

Remove unwanted accessibility panels

A box containing captions or a magnified area needs its own feature controls. On Windows, press Windows + Esc to close Magnifier. For a caption window on Windows 11, version 22H2 or later, open Settings > Accessibility > Captions and turn Live captions off.

If you need captions, change their placement instead. In the captions window, select Settings > Position > Above screen or Below screen to reserve space. To change the background, open Settings > Preferences > Caption style, then choose another style or select Edit.

On Windows 11, for a black block at the text insertion point, open Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor. Reduce Text cursor thickness and turn off Text cursor indicator if you do not want the additional marker. On Windows 11, if a contrast theme changed your interface backgrounds, open Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes, select None, and click Apply.

On Mac, open System Settings > Accessibility and select the feature responsible for the panel. Turn off Live Captions, or open Hover Text and disable the unwanted Hover Text, Hover Typing, or Hover Color switch. For a separate magnified area, open Zoom and disable unwanted activation methods; available features vary with your macOS version.

VoiceOver's braille panel keeps displaying what's on the screen even when its speech is muted. With VoiceOver running and its default modifier, press Control + Option + Fn + F8 to open VoiceOver Utility, then select Visuals > Panels and Menus. Clear Show caption panel or set Show Braille Panel to Off, preserving VoiceOver's other functions.

On Chromebook, select the time and open Settings > Accessibility > Display and magnification to disable the responsible magnifier. Press Ctrl + Alt + Z to turn off ChromeVox when the rectangle belongs to its screen-reader interface. On Ubuntu GNOME, open Activities, search for and open Accessibility, select Zoom, and turn Desktop Zoom off.

Hide gaming overlays and pinned widgets

Performance numbers inside the rectangle point toward a metrics overlay. On a supported NVIDIA system, press Alt + R to hide the statistics overlay; Alt + Z opens its overlay controls. NVIDIA says GeForce Experience is no longer supported, and NVIDIA App is its replacement.

For AMD Software, press Ctrl + Shift + O to toggle the metrics overlay. You can also open AMD Software, search for Metrics, select Performance Metrics, open Overlay, and disable Show Metrics Overlay. The controls can vary with your software version.

In Discord on Windows, select the cogwheel beside your username, open User Settings, select the overlay tab, and turn Enable Overlay off. For Steam, press Shift + Tab to close its overlay, then open Steam > Settings > In-game and disable Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game if unwanted. Disabling Steam's overlay can affect in-game purchases and other Steam features.

For a pinned Game Assist window, press Windows + G and move the pointer above the widget if its title bar is hidden. Select Unpin beside Close, then dismiss Game Bar. Check whether the rectangle disappears before changing another overlay.

Fix black content inside a browser

Keep troubleshooting inside the browser when the black area is confined to it. In Chrome, open More > More tools > Task manager, select the affected page or extension, and click End process, then reopen it. For a caption bubble on Windows or Mac, open More > Settings > Accessibility and turn Live Caption off.

Disable Chrome extensions individually through More > Extensions > Manage extensions. For persistent rendering faults, enter chrome://settings/system in the address bar, turn off Use graphics acceleration when available, and restart Chrome. This disables GPU-dependent web features, so treat it as a troubleshooting change.

In Edge, enter edge://extensions/, turn off all extensions, then turn them back on one at a time. To test graphics acceleration, enter edge://settings/system, turn off Use graphics acceleration when available, and restart Edge. When this resolves the rendering problem, update the graphics driver before testing acceleration again.

Firefox can check several possible causes together. Open its application menu, open the help menu, and choose Troubleshoot Mode… > Restart > Open. This temporarily disables extensions, themes, hardware acceleration, and other customizations, and restarting normally ends the test.

If the issue remains, update your browser. Chrome uses More > Help > About Google Chrome, followed by Relaunch when offered; Edge uses Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Firefox uses the help menu in its application menu > About Firefox, followed by Restart to update Firefox. Chrome on Linux updates through its package manager, Chrome on Chromebook through ChromeOS, and store or distribution versions of Firefox through their package sources.

Correct boxes during Zoom screen sharing

When sharing documents rather than video in Zoom, turn off video optimization, which Zoom says can distort static text and images. Before sharing, select Share Screen, choose the screen, open Options, and clear Optimize for video sharing. During an active share, use More > Optimize for video sharing to switch it off.

On Windows, open your profile-picture menu and choose Settings > Share Screen > Advanced. Under Enable hardware acceleration for, clear Screen sharing and check the share again. On macOS, the related video-sharing control is Use hardware acceleration to optimize video sharing.

Zoom identifies an Intel graphics-driver incident that caused black or gray boxes over shared content on Windows 10 and 11 PCs running Zoom 6.0.x with Intel Graphics Driver 32.0.101.5768 and Arc A-Series, Iris Xe, or Core Ultra integrated Arc graphics. Zoom's resolution is driver 32.0.101.5972 or the latest driver. If your system matches that issue, install a current compatible driver from Intel's Download Center, checking your computer manufacturer's driver requirements. Do not downgrade a newer compatible driver to match the historical fixed version.

Update the responsible app and graphics driver

When closing one app consistently removes the box, update that app before changing the whole system. In Windows, open Microsoft Store and select Check for Updates; on Mac, open App Store > Updates and install available updates. For apps installed elsewhere, use the publisher's own updater or official download page.

On Windows 11, an app that still misbehaves can be repaired through Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Open its More menu, select Advanced options, and choose Repair. If repair fails, you can use Reset, but it will permanently delete the app's data. Not every app provides these controls.

Install Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. For an offered graphics driver, open Advanced options > Optional updates, select the appropriate driver, and choose Download and install. Restart afterward; optional drivers are not installed automatically.

If the rectangle started immediately after a graphics-driver update, try restoring the previous driver using an administrator account. Right-click Start, open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the adapter, and select Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. Confirm the reason and restart. An unavailable button means Windows has no previous driver to restore.

On Mac, update the operating system and its built-in graphics components through Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Install the offered compatible update, then reopen the affected app and check whether the box returns.

Check the monitor and screen hardware

For an external display, reseat the display cable, check monitor power, and test another cable or monitor. Disconnect docks and external displays to isolate them. A monitor can also generate its own secondary-input window, so check your model's controls if closing software has no effect.

On a Dell C3422WE, open the monitor's on-screen menu with its joystick and select PIP/PBP > PIP/PBP Mode > Off. Other models use their own controls. You can also turn the monitor off, unplug and reconnect its power cable, then turn it on again.

For a fixed dark area on a Dell laptop, shut down, disconnect peripherals, and connect the charger. Hold D, press the power button, and keep D held until test colors appear. Look for areas that remain dark across different colors, then press Esc to stop.

For a Dell monitor, follow the model-specific Built-in diagnostics procedure in its user manual. A dark area that remains in test patterns, or is present before the operating system loads, needs manufacturer diagnosis and possible panel repair or replacement. An external monitor can provide a temporary workaround for a damaged laptop display; resetting the computer will not repair physical screen damage.

Isolate software that brings the box back

For a rectangle that returns at sign-in on Windows, open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off the responsible application. On Mac, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and record the Open at Login entries. Select them, click Remove, and restart. Add them back individually, restarting between checks, to identify which app brings the box back.

Use Safe Mode when you cannot identify the software involved; encrypted Windows devices can require the BitLocker recovery key. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode and check whether the rectangle remains.

For an Apple silicon Mac, shut down and hold the power button until startup options appear. Select the startup disk, hold Shift, and click Continue in Safe Mode; on an Intel Mac, start or restart while holding Shift until the login window. Restart normally to exit Safe Mode.

Reserve operating-system recovery for persistent software problems after these narrower checks. On Windows 11 with the 2022 annual update and the February 2024 optional update or a later update, use Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now; select OK, keep power and internet connected, and restart when installation finishes. Microsoft says this preserves apps, files, and settings, although the option can be unavailable on managed PCs.

Back up before choosing to factory reset your laptop as a last resort. On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC, choose Keep my files or Remove everything, then Cloud download or Local reinstall, and follow the confirmation screens. Both reset choices remove apps and settings, and Remove everything also deletes personal files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a black box mean my computer has malware?

A black rectangle alone does not establish that malware is present. With Microsoft Defender Antivirus active, open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, and run Quick scan if you also need to investigate unfamiliar software. Address detected threats and unfamiliar apps that launch with Windows.

Can Narrator cause a solid black rectangle?

Narrator normally displays a blue focus outline rather than a solid black rectangle. To keep its speech but hide the outline, press Windows + Ctrl + N and turn off Show the Narrator cursor under Narrator cursor settings.

Why does a black box appear only when you open a PDF?

Acrobat or Reader can have an application-specific rendering problem. On Windows, open the hamburger menu, select Preferences > Page Display, and clear Use 2D Graphics Acceleration under Rendering when your hardware exposes that checkbox. Reopen the affected PDF to check the result.

How do you close a black floating video window in Firefox?

Focus the Picture-in-Picture window and press Ctrl + W on Windows or Linux, or Command + W on Mac. This closes the floating video window when it appears black because video is absent or is not rendering.

Will resetting Chrome turn off its caption bubble?

Chrome's settings reset does not fully reset accessibility settings, so turn Live Caption off directly. A browser reset retains your bookmarks and passwords but resets extensions, themes, and other settings.
