You downloaded a PDF, image, attachment, or app on your iPhone, and now it is not where you expected. Downloads land in Files, Safari, Mail, Messages, Photos, iCloud Drive, or a browser's own download panel based on how you saved them. Start with the fastest places first, then use the deeper recovery options when the file is not sitting in Downloads.

Start in the Files Downloads folder

Open Files, tap Browse, then tap Downloads. If the Browse screen is not visible, tap Browse again until the locations list appears.

Tap the file to open it. For a Safari download saved to Apple's default iCloud location, open Files > Browse > iCloud Drive > Downloads.

If the download is not there, use Safari's recent download list next because Safari shows a temporary Downloads button for recent or in-progress downloads.

Use Safari's recent download button

This fixes Safari downloads that just finished or are still in progress.

Open Safari.

Next to the search field, tap the Downloads button.

Tap Downloads.

Check where Safari saves new downloads

The most common Safari cause is a download location set to iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or a custom folder instead of the folder you checked first.

Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Downloads.

Read the selected location. iCloud Drive saves to iCloud Drive > Downloads, On My iPhone saves to the device's Downloads folder, and Other saves to the folder chosen there.

Return to Files, tap Browse, then open that location.

Search Files by name or type

Use Files search when you know part of the file name, folder name, or document type.

  1. 1.Open Files.
  2. 2.Tap the search field.
  3. 3.Enter a file name, folder name, or document type.
  4. 4.Tap Recents, a location, or a tag below the search field to narrow the results.
  5. 5.Tap Search to hide the keyboard.
  6. 6.Tap a result to open it.

Browse iCloud Drive and app locations

The Files app browses local storage, iCloud Drive, connected external storage, and compatible third-party locations such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or Box.

With the drive or SD card reader connected, open Files, tap Browse, then choose On My iPhone, iCloud Drive, the external storage device name, or the third-party app location.

To make iCloud Drive downloads visible on your iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Drive or iCloud Drive, then turn on Sync this iPhone.

If a third-party location is missing, install and set up that app, then go to Files > Browse > More > Edit, turn on the app, and tap Done. If the file still does not appear, check the app that created or saved it, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.

Retrieve attachments from Mail and Messages

Attachments stay inside Mail or Messages until you save them to Files or Photos.

  1. 1.In Mail, open the message, touch and hold the attachment, then tap Save to Files.
  2. 2.For an image attachment in Mail, touch and hold the image, tap Save Image, then check Photos > Library or Photos > Search.
  3. 3.To find emails with attachments, open a mailbox, tap the Toggle Filtering button, tap Filtered by, then turn on Only Mail with Attachments.
  4. 4.In Messages, open the conversation, tap the contact or group icon at the top, swipe left, then tap Photos, Links, Documents, Locations, or Wallet.
  5. 5.For a received photo or video in Messages, tap the Save Photo button, then look in Photos.

Open Chrome or Firefox downloads

The most common browser-specific cause is checking only Apple's Files downloads after downloading through Chrome or Firefox.

For Chrome, open More > Downloads. Touch and hold a file name to copy, share, or remove the download.

When you chose SAVE... in Chrome, check the destination selected on the Save in... screen. Chrome saves to Files or Google Drive, and images save to Photos or Google Photos depending on the option you picked.

If SAVE... is not available in Chrome, use Share > Save to Files > Save, then check the chosen Files location.

For Firefox, tap the menu button at the bottom of the screen, then tap Downloads. On iPad, the menu is at the top right.

Recover deleted iCloud Drive downloads

This fixes iCloud Drive downloads deleted within the last 30 days; permanently removed files cannot be restored.

Go to icloud.com/iclouddrive in a browser.

Sign in to your Apple Account.

Open Recently Deleted.

Select each file you want back.

Tap Recover, or use Recover All to restore everything in that list.

Fix blocked or missing download locations

A missing Files app usually means the built-in app was removed or access is restricted. Restore it from the App Store by searching for Files with the exact app name, tapping the Redownload button, waiting for the restore to finish, and opening Files from the Home Screen.

Restrictions can hide the places you expect to use. Check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, then review iTunes & App Store Purchases, Allowed Apps & Features, App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content, and Intelligence & Siri for limits affecting downloads, browsers, Files, App Store access, app deletion, or search features.

On a school or work iPhone, check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for installed profiles and contact the organization before removing one. Deleting a profile deletes its associated settings, apps, and data.

For computer access, use Finder on macOS 10.15 or later, Apple Devices on Windows 10 or later, and iTunes only on macOS 10.14 or earlier or Windows 7 or earlier. Only apps that support file sharing expose files this way; for iCloud Drive files on Windows, use iCloud for Windows and open File Explorer > iCloud Drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my downloaded image go to Photos instead of Files?

In Mail, Save Image puts an image attachment in Photos. In Messages, Save Photo sends received photos or videos to Photos, so check Library or Search there.

Can I recover a deleted iPhone download?

For iCloud Drive files, use icloud.com/iclouddrive > Recently Deleted within 30 days and choose Recover. Permanently removed files cannot be restored.

Where do I find apps I downloaded before?

Open App Store, tap your account button or picture, then go to Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps, then tap Not on this [device]. In a Family Sharing group, tap My Apps or a family member's name first. Find the app, then tap the Redownload button for an available compatible app.

Can I retrieve iPhone downloads from a Windows PC?

Yes, for iCloud Drive files. The latest iCloud for Windows requires Windows 11 or later. After setup, open File Explorer > iCloud Drive; only downloaded files can be opened.
