To duplicate a sheet in Excel on Windows, right-click its sheet tab, select Move or Copy, check Create a copy, choose its position under Before sheet, and select OK. On Mac, hold Option while dragging the sheet tab, releasing the mouse button before the key; in Excel for the web, right-click the tab and select Duplicate. The desktop steps below apply to Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024 on Windows and Mac.

The short version

  • Windows: Use Move or Copy with Create a copy selected, or hold Ctrl while dragging the sheet tab.
  • Mac: Hold Option while dragging the tab, releasing the mouse button before the key.
  • Browser: Right-click the sheet tab and select Duplicate to copy it within the workbook.
  • Copying data: The browser copy-and-paste workaround loses conditional formatting.

Duplicate a sheet on Windows

Right-click the tab of the worksheet you want to duplicate and select Move or Copy. Check Create a copy, then choose where the duplicate should go under Before sheet. Select OK to create the copy in the same workbook.

You can also copy a worksheet in Excel by holding Ctrl and dragging its sheet tab to the desired position. This method creates the duplicate within the same workbook.

Duplicate a sheet on Mac

Hold Option and drag the sheet tab to the position where you want the duplicate. Release the mouse button before releasing Option.

To choose the destination through menus, select the source sheet and open Edit > Sheet > Move or Copy Sheet. Set To book to the current workbook and choose a position under Before sheet. Check Create a copy, then select OK.

Duplicate a sheet in your browser

In Excel for the web, right-click the sheet tab and select Duplicate. This command copies the sheet within the same workbook.

To transfer worksheet data into a new sheet in this or another workbook, you can use copy and paste. This workaround loses conditional formatting in the pasted copy and does not make a complete sheet clone.

On the source worksheet, press Ctrl + Spacebar, then Shift + Spacebar, then Ctrl + C. In the destination workbook, select + to add a sheet, select cell A1, and press Ctrl + V. Use the same sequence in the current workbook if that is where you want the data.

Put the copy in another workbook

On Windows, right-click the source sheet tab and select Move or Copy. In the destination-book dropdown, select (new book), check Create a copy, and select OK. In the new workbook, select File > Save to save the separate file.

On Mac, open the destination workbook first, then use Window to activate the source workbook and select its sheet. Choose Edit > Sheet > Move or Copy Sheet. Set To book to the destination workbook, choose the position under Before sheet, check Create a copy, and select OK.

Fix copying blocked by workbook protection

Workbook-structure protection can block sheet copying in Excel for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024 on Windows and Mac. Removing it removes the workbook-structure restriction, and you need the password when one was set.

Select Review > Protect Workbook, enter the password if required, and select OK. Then repeat the sheet-copy method for your platform. Removing protection does not duplicate the sheet by itself.

Prepare and run a duplication macro

In desktop Excel with VBA, you can use a macro to duplicate a worksheet. You need permission to run macros; for that setup, see how to enable macros for trusted files. To copy a sheet beside itself, include this statement in a VBA procedure, replacing both occurrences of Sheet1 with the actual sheet name.

Worksheets("Sheet1").Copy After:=Worksheets("Sheet1")

With the duplication macro already present, select Developer > Macros and choose its name. Select Run to execute the procedure.

Create an Office Script for repeated copies

You can use Office Scripts to duplicate a sheet with eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions on the web, Windows, and Mac. This method requires Office Scripts access. Select Automate > New Script > Create in Code Editor, then enter this script, replacing Template with your source sheet’s name.

function main(workbook: ExcelScript.Workbook) { const sheet = workbook.getWorksheet("Template"); sheet.copy(ExcelScript.WorksheetPositionType.after, sheet); }

Select Save Script, then run the script using the Office Scripts editor. It creates a copy immediately after the named source sheet.

In Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac, you can also add a worksheet button when you have Office Scripts and script-sharing access. Select Automate and choose the prepared duplication script, or select View Scripts > Recent Scripts. Under Share this script, enable Associate with workbook; this also shares the script with people who can edit the workbook. Select Add button to worksheet, then select the resulting button whenever you want to run it.

Run the script through a cloud flow

For cloud automation, you need Office Scripts, a Microsoft 365 business license, an eligible Power Automate account, and Excel Online (Business) access. Your workbook must be in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint. Prepare and save the duplication script using the editor steps above, keeping a named worksheet in the script rather than using the active worksheet.

In the Power Automate web portal, select Create > Instant flow, choose Manually trigger a flow, and select Create. Select + > Add an action > Excel Online (Business) > Run script. Set Location, Document Library, File, and Script, then select Save.

Under My flows, open the flow and select Run. Select Run flow, then select Done.

Copy a worksheet with a desktop flow

On Windows, Power Automate for desktop provides a worksheet-copy action for installed desktop Excel. In a desktop flow, use Launch Excel for the workbook, then add Copy Excel worksheet. Set Excel instance, set Copy worksheet with to Name or Index, and supply Worksheet name or Worksheet index.

Set Target Excel instance and Worksheet new name, then set Paste worksheet as to First worksheet or Last worksheet. Use the same instance for a copy within the workbook, or another launched instance for a copy in another workbook. Run the flow to create the copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a VBA macro copy several sheets into a new workbook at once?

Yes, a VBA procedure can use Worksheets(Array("Sheet1", "Sheet2")).Copy to copy those sheets into a new workbook. Replace the example names with your actual sheet names.

How do you choose a different destination with VBA?

Use Worksheets("Sheet1").Copy without a destination to create a new workbook, replacing Sheet1 with your worksheet’s name. You can supply an existing-workbook destination through Before or After. For that operation, the source and destination must belong to the same Excel.Application instance.

Can you launch a duplication macro without opening the Macros dialog?

Yes, you can assign an existing macro to a keyboard shortcut, the Quick Access Toolbar, a custom ribbon group, a button, or a graphical object. You can also configure it to run through a workbook-opening event. These options launch a prepared macro rather than providing separate built-in sheet-copy commands.

Can Excel for the web run a VBA duplication macro?

No, Excel for the web cannot execute VBA macros. Browser automation uses Office Scripts when your subscription and account provide access.

Do Microsoft 365 Personal and Family include Office Scripts access?

Microsoft lists Office Scripts availability for Personal and Family as a preview with Insider requirements. Access is not universal, so those subscriptions alone do not guarantee that you can use the script methods.
