You cannot restore deleted Instagram messages through Instagram, but you can check for surviving copies with another participant, in saved files or in earlier notifications. A new information export excludes deleted information, so it will not bring deleted DMs back. Start by checking whether the conversation was deleted or simply moved out of your main inbox.

The short version

  • Check the inbox: Missing conversations may still be in message requests, spam or another inbox folder.
  • Ask another participant: Deleting a conversation removes your copy, so someone else may still have it.
  • Look for saved records: Earlier exports, screenshots, saved attachments and surviving notifications may contain what you need.
  • Know the limit: Instagram's Recently deleted feature and a new information export cannot restore deleted DMs.

Check whether the conversation is still in your inbox

In the Instagram mobile app, open Messages, then tap Requests in the top right. Look for the conversation there, then tap Spam to check filtered requests. Open the relevant thread and tap or touch and hold a message to view it; tap Accept to move an eligible conversation into your main messages folder.

Restricting someone also moves their conversation to message requests, so look for the person under Messages > Requests. To review restricted accounts in the Instagram app, open Profile > Menu, then select Restricted under How others can interact with you. Tap Next if shown, find the account and tap Unrestrict if you want to remove the restriction. Instagram Lite uses different restriction controls.

You can check Instagram messages and requests before moving on to saved copies. Finding a conversation in these locations means it still exists; these checks cannot restore deleted content.

Inspect other folders on a professional account

Business and creator accounts have additional places to check in the Instagram mobile app. Open Messages and inspect Primary, General and Requests. Use the filter icon to the right of the search bar to remove unread or flagged filters that may be hiding the conversation.

With a connected professional account, you can also look for an existing conversation in Meta Business Suite, where messages can sit in the Spam or Done folders, provided you have the necessary business access and Instagram message access is enabled. Open the relevant business, then go to Inbox > Messages and select Instagram. Use Search to find the participant or message content, and inspect Spam and Done. These checks find existing conversations; Meta does not document Business Suite as a way to restore Instagram-deleted messages.

Ask another participant for their copy

Meta says deleting a conversation removes it only from your inbox, so another participant may still have the content. Contact that person and ask them to open the conversation in Messages, then send the needed text, screenshots or saved attachments. For a group conversation, ask someone who still retains the relevant messages.

This gives you a separate record rather than restoring your original inbox history. If the person needs to capture the conversation, they can take a screenshot on their device and send it to you.

If the sender used Unsend, Instagram removes the message from every participant's chat view and excludes it from Data Download. Another person can help only if they independently preserved it beforehand. In chats supporting vanish mode, that content disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns the mode off. Switching the mode off does not restore it, so only an independently preserved copy may remain.

Look for an earlier export or saved attachment

Search your device and backup storage for an Instagram information export you saved before deleting the conversation. Inspect its message records for the text you need. An earlier export can supply a historical copy only if it contained those messages, and it cannot be imported to restore the conversation.

Your photo library may also contain a screenshot or attachment saved separately from Instagram. If that saved image or video was itself deleted from your iCloud Photos library, sign in at iCloud.com, open Photos > Recently Deleted, select the file and click Recover. Apple's recovery window for those photos and videos is 30 days; it applies to the saved file, not the Instagram message.

On Android, check Google Photos for any screenshot or media copy you saved earlier. For a deleted file, open Collections > Trash, touch and hold the item, then tap Restore. The item must still be in Trash, and restoring it recovers only that saved file.

Check notification text on your phone

A notification may retain part of a message even when the conversation is gone. On Android, swipe down from the top of the screen and inspect any remaining Instagram alert. You can retrieve only the content still present in the notification.

On a Pixel phone, open Settings > Notifications > Notification history. History must already have been enabled through Use notification history; Pixel retains dismissed alerts for the preceding 24 hours. You can also swipe down, scroll to the bottom and tap History.

On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. Inspect previously recorded Instagram alerts; settings vary by model and software. The switch at the top enables recording going forward, so turning it on after the event does not recreate old notifications. Turning Android notification history off deletes its entries and stops recording.

On other Android devices, notification history availability, paths and retention depend on the manufacturer. Android's reference implementation retains 24 hours by default. Check only for alerts recorded before the message disappeared.

On iPhone or iPad, swipe up from the middle of the Lock Screen, or swipe down from the top left elsewhere to open Notification Center. Expand the Instagram notification group and touch and hold an alert to inspect it. On a supported device using Apple Intelligence notification summaries, tap the summary to expand the text. This checks remaining alerts and cannot recover cleared notifications.

Inspect alerts on a computer or watch

On a Mac that already received Instagram website or mirrored notifications, click the date and time in the menu bar to open Notification Center. Alternatively, swipe left with two fingers from the trackpad's right edge. Expand the relevant notification stack and inspect any remaining alert.

On Windows 11, press Windows + N, or select the taskbar clock or notification bell. Expand a relevant notification using its arrow, if present, and inspect any surviving Instagram browser, app or mirrored notification text.

If you already used Phone Link with a supported Android phone or iPhone and notification sharing enabled, open Phone Link > Notifications on the PC. Inspect any remaining Instagram alert there; notification preferences are under Settings > Features > Notifications within Phone Link. Dismissals can synchronize between devices, so Phone Link is not an independent permanent archive. Setting it up after deletion does not create a historical notification archive.

On an Apple Watch paired with the iPhone that received the alert, touch and hold the top of the watch face, wait for Notification Center, then swipe down. Turn the Digital Crown or swipe to find the Instagram notification, then tap it; tap a grouped stack first. Reading or dismissing a notification on the watch also dismisses it from iPhone.

For a Galaxy Watch running Wear OS that was already paired with an Android phone receiving Instagram alerts, swipe right from the watch's Home screen. Inspect any remaining Instagram notification for preview text. These watch checks help only when the relevant alert was already delivered and still remains.

Export the information that is still available

A fresh export can preserve available account information, but deleted information is excluded. In the Instagram mobile app, open Profile > Menu > Meta Account > Your information and permissions > Export your information > Create export. The alternative account-settings label during rollout is Accounts Center.

Select your Instagram profile, tap Next, then select Export to device. When customizing the information, choose Specific types of information to select categories such as messages, or choose Available information for available account information excluding data logs. Customize the dates and format, then tap Start export.

On the desktop website, start at More > Settings > Meta Account and follow the same export controls. Preparation can take up to 30 days, and you must retrieve the result from Available downloads within four days. Changing the date range or export scope does not make deleted information recoverable.

Troubleshoot an inbox that is not loading

If messages are missing because Instagram is malfunctioning on Android, iPhone or iPad, update Instagram and your device's operating system, then restart the device. Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data to check whether the inbox loads on the other connection. These steps address loading errors and do not reverse deletion.

For unresolved app problems, Meta also recommends reinstalling Instagram. On Android, open Settings > Apps > Instagram > Uninstall, then reinstall from the official Google Play listing and sign in. Check that the publisher is Meta Platforms, Inc.

For iPhone or iPad, reinstall from the official App Store listing and sign in. Check that the developer is Instagram, Inc.

Report a persistent technical fault in the app by opening Profile > Menu, then selecting Help under More info and support. Tap Report a Problem > Report problem without shaking and follow the displayed instructions. Alternatively, return to the faulty screen and shake the phone to begin reporting. You can optionally tap Include Complete Logs and Diagnostics.

On the desktop website, open More > Report a problem, describe the issue, optionally select Add File, then select Send report. Reporting labels can vary by platform, and Meta does not document technical reports as a way to restore deleted DMs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Instagram Recently deleted keep messages for 30 days?

No, Instagram's Recently deleted feature restores eligible posts, reels, videos and stories, not DMs. Its 30-day recovery window does not apply to messages.

Can connecting Facebook or opening Messenger recover deleted Instagram chats?

No, connecting Facebook or opening Messenger will not transfer deleted Instagram chats there. Meta discontinued Instagram and Facebook cross-app communication beginning in mid-December 2023. Existing Instagram conversations with Facebook accounts became read-only and did not move to Facebook or Messenger.

Can reporting a conversation give you a copy of deleted messages?

No, reporting does not give you a recovery copy, even though Meta says deleted or unsent messages may be included when a conversation or surrounding message is reported. Separate law-enforcement preservation and disclosure processes concern records Meta still holds. They are not consumer restore controls and do not guarantee that deleted content remains available.

Can Meta AI support help with an inbox problem?

Meta offers its AI support assistant for account problems, but does not document an ability to restore deleted DMs. Where available in Instagram on iOS or Android, open Settings and activity > More info and support to access the assistant and describe the problem. You can also access it through the web Help Center, subject to rollout and regional availability.

What if your device cannot install the current Instagram app?

The current United States App Store listing requires iOS 16.3 or later or iPadOS 16.3 or later. On Android, installation availability depends on your device and region. Reinstalling remains a troubleshooting step for loading problems, not a way to recover deleted messages.
