To block a person on Facebook, open their profile, select Options, More or the three dots, then choose Block and confirm. You can also add someone to your blocked list through Facebook settings on your phone or computer.
A Facebook profile block applies to the person's Facebook profile. Message blocking, Dating blocking, Page blocking and group bans have different scopes, so choose the control that matches what you want to stop.
The short version
- Fastest route: Open the person's Facebook profile and use Block in its options menu.
- Settings route: Open Blocking under Audience and visibility to add a person by name.
- Messenger distinction: A Facebook profile block through Messenger also blocks that profile on Facebook, while message and call blocking leaves it unblocked.
- Marketplace scope: Blocking a Marketplace buyer or seller also blocks their Facebook profile.

Block someone from their Facebook profile
Open the person's Facebook profile on a computer. Click Options or More, click Block, then click Confirm.
In the Facebook Android, iPhone or iPad app, open the profile and tap the three dots or More. Tap Block, then tap Block again to finish. The same sequence applies to Facebook Lite for Android and Facebook in a mobile browser.
These profile controls also work when the target is a Facebook Page. If you cannot find the person's profile, use the name lookup in your blocking settings instead.
Add someone through Facebook settings
In the Facebook Android, iPhone or iPad app, tap Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings. Under Audience and visibility, tap Blocking, then tap Add to blocked list. The position of Menu varies by platform and layout.
Enter the person's name and tap Block beside the correct result. Tap Block again to confirm. This settings route also works in a mobile browser.
Facebook Lite for Android uses the same route through Blocking and Add to blocked list. Enter the name, tap Block beside the person, then tap Close.
On Facebook's desktop website, click your profile picture, then choose Settings & privacy > Settings. Under Audience and visibility, click Blocking. Beside Block profiles and Pages, click Edit > Add to blocked list.
Type the person's name, click Block beside the correct result, then click Confirm. If the name search does not find their profile, try an email address associated with it.
You can also block from your blocked list on a computer. In the same Blocking settings, click Edit > See your blocked list. Enter the profile name, click Block, then select Block [name], with the person's name shown in the button.
Block a profile through Messenger
In Messenger on Android or iPhone, open Chats and select the person's conversation. Tap their name, scroll down and tap Block, then tap Block [Name]. Blocking a Facebook profile through this Messenger route also blocks that profile on Facebook.
For a message request in Messenger on Android, tap Menu > Message requests. From Message requests, tap Block to block the person who sent the request. The sender does not need to be a Facebook friend for you to use this control.
Block only messages and calls
For a communication block on Facebook's desktop website, click Messenger at the top right and open the conversation. Click Options at the top of the chat, then choose Block > Block messages and calls. Click Block to finish; this leaves the person's Facebook profile unblocked.
In Facebook Lite for Android, select Messenger at the top and open the conversation. Tap Settings at the top right, then Block [name] > Block Messages and Calls > Block. This also leaves the Facebook profile unblocked.
In the Facebook Android app, when integrated messaging is available, tap Messenger at the top right and open the person's conversation. Tap their name, then tap Block and Block again. This integrated messaging route creates a message block, separate from a Facebook profile block.
To block Page messages in Messenger on Android, open Chats and the Page conversation. Tap the Page's name, scroll down and tap Block, then tap Block again. This stops Page messages and calls without automatically blocking the Page on Facebook.
In Messenger on iPhone, open Chats and the Page conversation, then tap the Page's name. Tap Block > Block messages and calls, then tap Block. This also leaves the Page itself unblocked on Facebook.
For a Page conversation open in Messenger's browser chat controls, click Conversation information beside the video-call button. Click Privacy and support > Block > Block messages and calls, then click Block.
For a business conversation in Messenger on Android, open it from Chats. Tap Information > Block, then tap BLOCK to stop the business contacting you in Messenger.
For a business conversation in Messenger on iPhone, open it from Chats. Tap the business name, then Block > Block messages and calls, and tap Block.
Block a Marketplace buyer or seller
On the Facebook Android app, tap Menu > Marketplace, using See more if Marketplace is hidden. Tap Marketplace profile > Inbox, then open the conversation. Tap the person's photo, choose Options, and tap Block followed by Block again.
On the Facebook iPhone app, open Menu > Marketplace, using See more if needed. Tap Marketplace profile > Inbox and open the conversation. Tap the person's photo, then View Marketplace profile > Options > Block, and tap Block again.
You can also open the Marketplace conversation in Messenger on Android or iPhone. Tap the person's name, scroll down to Block, then tap Block [Name].
These routes create a Facebook profile block, rather than a block limited to Marketplace. Existing Marketplace messages, ratings and reviews can remain visible afterward.
Use separate controls for Dating and group nicknames
On iPhone, when Facebook Dating is supported for your app, account and region, tap Menu > Dating > Matches. Tap the person's Dating profile picture, choose Options, then tap Block [person] in Dating and Block. A Dating block does not block the person on Facebook or Messenger.
For a nickname in a Facebook group that supports nicknames, find a post or comment by that nickname and select its name or profile photo. On the group profile, select Options > Block [Nickname], then select Block. This blocks that nickname in that group, without blocking the underlying main profile.
Blocking controls apply to different parts of Facebook and Messenger. If you later want to reverse a block, follow the steps to unblock someone on Facebook and Messenger for the relevant service.
Block someone from a Page you manage
To use these Page controls, you need Facebook access to the Page. The block applies to that Page rather than your personal profile.
On a computer, click your profile photo, choose See all profiles and select your Page. Click the Page's profile photo, then Settings & privacy > Settings. Under Audience and visibility, click Blocking.
Beside Block profiles and Pages, click Edit > Add to blocked list. Enter the person's name, click Block beside the result, then click Confirm.
In the Facebook Android or iPhone app, switch into the Page through Menu > Options and select the Page. Tap Menu > Settings & privacy > Settings, then under Audience and visibility, tap Blocking > Add to blocked list. Enter the name, tap Block beside the result, then tap Block again.
To block a follower on a computer, switch into your Page through your profile photo > See all profiles. Open your Page from the left menu and click Followers below its photo. Beside the person, click Options > Block.
You can also open blocking management from Followers while switched into your Page on a computer. Beside the followers search bar, click Options > Manage Blocking. Click Edit > Add to blocked list, enter the name, click Block beside the result, then click Confirm.
For a commenter on a computer, open your Page's post while acting as the Page. Hover over the commenter's photo, click Options, then select Block.
On Android, open the post while acting as the Page, then touch and hold the person's comment. Tap Delete comment and block; this also deletes the comment. On iPhone, open the post while acting as the Page, touch and hold the comment, then tap Block User.
You can also open the Page's post while acting as the Page and tap the commenter's photo. On Android, tap See Options, then Block. On iPhone, tap Options below the cover photo, then Block.
Ban someone from a group you manage
If you are a group administrator or moderator, open Facebook's groups area on a computer and select your group. Click Members or People. Beside the person, click Options > Ban from group.
To remove their recent activity, check Delete recent activity. To include future accounts, select Ban [name’s] future accounts, then click Confirm to finish. Both options are optional, and Facebook may not detect every future account. This action bans the person from the group; it does not create a personal profile block.
Manage Messenger Kids contacts and invitations
In Messenger Kids on iPhone, where available, tap the person's photo to open the conversation. Tap their photo at the top, tap Block, then tap Block again. This blocks the child's Messenger Kids contact rather than a Facebook personal profile.
As a parent using Facebook's desktop website, you can instead remove the child's friend connection. From the Home screen, click Messenger Kids, using See more if it is hidden. In Parent Dashboard, click Friends, then click Options beside the friend and select Remove [person] as a friend. Friend removal is separate from the child's blocking action.
To block only someone's event invitations on Facebook's desktop website, click your profile picture, then select Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking. Beside Block event invites, click Edit > Add to blocked list. Enter the person's name, or click Block beside a suggested profile. This ignores future event invitations from that profile without creating a full profile block.
To block only a friend's app invitations on the desktop website, click your profile picture, then select Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking. Beside Block app invites, click Edit > Add to blocked list, then enter the friend's name or email. This blocks that friend's app invitations without creating a full profile block.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does blocking someone apply to all of my Facebook profiles?
Manage blocking separately from each of your own Facebook profiles. If you use more than one profile, handle the block from each profile where you want it applied.
Can a group administrator still see my activity after I block them?
A group administrator you personally block can still see your activity within their group. Your personal block does not prevent that administrator from seeing your group activity.
Why can't I block someone directly from a Feed post menu?
Facebook no longer offers Block directly in the Feed post menu. Open the author's profile and use its blocking controls instead.
Can I use the standalone Messenger desktop app to block someone?
Meta says the Messenger desktop app for Mac and Windows is no longer available. Use Facebook's website or a supported mobile app instead.
