Copy pi and the product operator

Use π for the constant, Π for the Greek capital letter, and ∏ for the product operator.

  • Greek small letter pi

    U+03C0

    Also called pi constant

  • Greek capital letter pi

    U+03A0

  • N-ary product

    U+220F

    Also called product operator

Choose a copy button to place a character on the clipboard.

Ways to type pi

Picker routes are listed alongside shortcuts because keyboard results depend on the app and the active layout.
PlatformMethod
Microsoft Word

Unicode conversion

Alt plus X
  1. Type 03C0 for π, 03A0 for Π, or 220F for ∏.
  2. Press Alt and X to convert the value.
03C0, then Alt+X

Microsoft documents this conversion as a Word feature rather than a system-wide shortcut.

Microsoft Word equation

Linear format command

  1. Press Alt and the equals key to start an equation.
  2. Type \pi, \Pi, or \prod.
  3. Press the spacebar to convert the command.
\pi, then Space

Microsoft lists these commands for equation input, so they stay visible as text in ordinary prose.

Windows

Character Map

  1. Open Character Map.
  2. Choose a font that contains Greek letters.
  3. Select π, copy it, and paste it into the destination app.

Microsoft documents Character Map for copying individual characters from a selected font.

macOS

Character Viewer

  1. Press Fn and E, press the Globe key and E, or choose Edit and then Emoji & Symbols.
  2. Search for pi.
  3. Select the character to insert it.

Apple documents the viewer and its search field, which avoids a layout-specific key combination.

Google Docs and Slides

Special characters

  1. Choose Insert, Symbols, and Special characters.
  2. Enter the Unicode value 03C0, pick a category, or draw the character.
  3. Select the result.

Google states that Sheets has no direct picker, so copy the character and paste it into the cell.

HTML

Named or numeric reference

π, π, or π

Π resolves to U+03A0 and ∏ resolves to U+220F, and a UTF-8 page can hold each character directly.

Copy π from the panel above for the circle constant, or copy Π and ∏ when the text needs the Greek capital letter or the product operator. In Word, type 03C0 and press Alt and X; on a Mac, open Character Viewer and search for pi.

Unicode gives each of them its own value, so choose by code point rather than by shape.

Identify pi and its lookalikes

Unicode names π GREEK SMALL LETTER PI at U+03C0, the lowercase letter used for the circle constant. The capital form Π is GREEK CAPITAL LETTER PI at U+03A0, a letter rather than an operator.

The product operator ∏ is separate, named N-ARY PRODUCT at U+220F and classified as a mathematical symbol. A fourth character, ϖ at U+03D6, is GREEK PI SYMBOL, a variant shape with a compatibility decomposition to U+03C0. The rest of the alphabet sits in the Greek alphabet guide.

Insert π in Microsoft Word

Microsoft documents typing a Unicode value and pressing Alt and X to convert it in place. Type 03C0 for π, 03A0 for Π, or 220F for ∏. If the conversion swallows an adjacent hexadecimal character, select only the four code characters first.

The Alt code tables on that page cover ASCII and Latin-based characters on a 10-key numeric pad and supply no code for pi, so use Alt and X, Character Map, or direct copy.

Build pi inside a Word equation

Press Alt and the equals key to start an equation, type \pi, and press the spacebar so Word converts it to π. Microsoft lists \Pi for the capital letter and \prod for the product operator.

They work only inside an equation and stay visible as text elsewhere. Use the equation route when limits belong above and below the operator, the same split that applies to the square root symbol and its stretched radical bar.

Copy π with Windows Character Map

Microsoft documents Character Map for copying individual characters from a selected font. Open it, choose a font with Greek letters, select π, and paste it into the destination app. This works where Alt and X is unavailable.

Insert π on a Mac

Apple documents opening the emoji and symbols viewer with Fn and E, the Globe key and E, or Edit and then Emoji & Symbols. Its search field finds pi by name, and it holds the other Greek letters, including the one in the delta symbol guide.

Insert π in Google Docs or Slides

Choose Insert, Symbols, and Special characters, then enter the Unicode value 03C0, pick a category, or draw the character. Google states that Sheets has no direct picker, so copy the character and paste it into the cell.

Use pi in HTML

A UTF-8 page can contain π, Π, and ∏ directly. HTML also defines a reference for each.

  • Named π, Π, and ∏
  • Decimal π, Π, and ∏
  • Hexadecimal π, Π, and ∏

Named references must match the published case, so π and Π differ, and ϖ gives ϖ at U+03D6.

Fix the wrong character

  1. 1.Confirm the code point, U+03C0 for π, U+03A0 for Π, and U+220F for ∏.
  2. 2.If Word leaves 03C0 as text, put the cursor right after the value and press Alt and X again.
  3. 3.If a command such as \pi stays visible, start a Word equation before typing it.
  4. 4.If a box or blank appears, switch to a font with Greek letters.
  5. 5.If limits belong above and below the operator, use equation tools, as a limit does with the infinity symbol.

Common questions

Is Π the same character as ∏

No. Π is GREEK CAPITAL LETTER PI at U+03A0, a letter. ∏ is N-ARY PRODUCT at U+220F, a mathematical symbol. Fonts draw them alike, but the stored values differ.

Which character should represent the constant

Use π at U+03C0, what Word produces from the 03C0 conversion and the \pi equation command.

What is ϖ used for

ϖ is GREEK PI SYMBOL at U+03D6, a variant shape rather than a separate letter, since Unicode records a compatibility decomposition to U+03C0. Keep U+03C0 in text that will be searched or compared.
