Windows legacy Alt input uses decimal byte values entered on a numeric keypad while Alt is held. The leading zero matters. In applications that support the convention, a leading-zero value is interpreted through the ANSI or system code page used by the accepting application or control. No-leading-zero behavior has a different history and is not a portable Unicode input method.
The reference below deliberately separates CP1252 leading-zero rows from a historical U.S. IBM PC/OEM Alt display-glyph set. Those display glyphs are not the formal CP437 byte-to-Unicode conversion table. Unicode identity, Microsoft Word’s hexadecimal Alt+X conversion, and HTML source references are labeled as different systems.

This table keeps the leading-zero CP1252 convention separate from the historical no-leading-zero IBM PC/OEM display-glyph convention. The latter is not the formal CP437 conversion table. Unicode values, Word Alt+X, macOS shortcuts, and legacy Windows Alt codes remain separate systems.

Windows legacy Alt input
The Alt-code column is a decimal legacy input sequence. Its result can depend on the code page, application, keyboard hardware, and Windows configuration.
Word hexadecimal Alt+X
Word uses hexadecimal Unicode input followed by Alt+X. That Word-specific conversion is not a Windows decimal Alt code and does not require a legacy code-page byte mapping.
Unicode and HTML values
A U+ value identifies a Unicode character. An HTML numeric reference is web source syntax. Neither value is automatically a system-wide keyboard shortcut.
Mac input stays separate
macOS does not use these Windows code-page Alt sequences. Use a verified layout-specific shortcut, Keyboard Viewer, Character Viewer, or direct copy for Mac input.
