Nintendo's battle royale puzzle game Tetris 99 launches its 52nd competitive event timed to cross-promote the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie. The Maximus Cup runs from Friday, April 3 through Monday, April 6, featuring a theme inspired by both Super Mario Galaxy games.

Players competing in online Tetris 99 mode during the four-day window need to collect at least 100 event points to unlock a new in-game theme. Event points are awarded based on rank achieved in each battle, with the galactic-themed cosmetics serving as direct movie tie-ins.

The timing matches Nintendo's broader MAR10 Day celebrations announced today. Starting April 1, fans can use the free Nintendo Today app to check in at participating theaters showing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and unlock exclusive digital content including a photo frame marking their viewing date and location.

Nintendo revealed the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie yesterday, showing Bowser seeking revenge after being imprisoned by Mario for his previous crimes against the Mushroom Kingdom. The film releases nationwide on April 1 with returning voice actors Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser.

New cast members include Donald Glover as Yoshi and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

The first Super Mario Bros. Movie grossed $1.3 billion worldwide against a $100 million budget, making it the only video game adaptation to reach $1 billion at the global box office.

Beyond the Tetris event, Nintendo's MAR10 Day promotions include digital collectible cards available through June 10 via the Nintendo Today app, with 40 different types to collect. Fans who unlock three cards between March 10 and May 31 earn 100 My Nintendo Platinum Points.

Special offers on games starring Mario and friends run through March 14 at participating retailers and until March 15 on Nintendo eShop for digital titles. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members gain access today to Game Boy Advance title Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Virtual Boy games Mario Clash and Mario's Tennis.

The LEGO Group also revealed its newest adult-focused set today: Luigi & Mach 8 with 2,234 pieces featuring a buildable Luigi figure seated in a large-scale Mach 8 kart recreation. The set pairs with the previously released Mario & Standard Kart for head-to-head display configurations.
