Tesla revealed its first Cybercab with built-in Starlink satellite internet hardware, posting photos on X that show the equipment integrated directly into the vehicle's roofline. The production-ready Cybercab with factory-integrated Starlink hardware advances CEO Elon Musk's broader vision of putting Starlink connectivity in all Tesla cars.
Musk framed the integration as a connectivity fix during Tesla's second-quarter earnings call, saying Starlink would help address gaps in cellular coverage as the company expands its self-driving robotaxi service. The concern is practical: robotaxis that lose connectivity could effectively go missing, and Musk noted Starlink's ability to provide connectivity anywhere makes it important for keeping the fleet operational.
For riders, the built-in dish opens up serious in-cabin entertainment options. Musk said passengers in the autonomous two-seat vehicle can watch live sports in 4K, stream movies, play games, or get work done while the car drives itself.
Tesla formally confirmed the direct integration into the Cybercab in late July, with the first Starlink-equipped unit now shown off. The Cybercab represents the latest collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, Musk's rocket manufacturing company, which has grown increasingly intertwined with the automaker through projects like the Terafab chip factory and SpaceX's use of Tesla Megapacks and vehicles.
The rollout still has limits. Musk noted on the earnings call that the Cybercab's new chassis still requires additional specific driving data before large-scale road deployment.
Tesla currently uses its Model Y vehicles in its robotaxi fleet, meaning the Starlink-equipped Cybercab needs to clear that data hurdle before it can hit roads at scale.
