Sony is bringing Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) to PS5, giving the console an AI upscaling option that the company says improves picture detail and stability. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first supported games, with patches scheduled for October 1 to add QSSR as another graphics option on PS5. The feature extends Sony’s AI upscaling work beyond PS5 Pro, where PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) already operates.

Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier derived from PSSR, whose computing requirements had previously prevented Sony from bringing that experience to PS5. PSSR examines individual pixels in game images and uses AI to produce an upscaled picture, with Sony claiming greater detail and stability than conventional methods. Sony still positions PSSR above QSSR for image quality on PS5 Pro, so the two consoles are getting different tiers of its upscaling technology.

For Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac Games says QSSR improves clarity at the pixel level and makes environments more visually stable. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology / Insomniac Games, points to additional visible detail in Madripoor’s crowded streets and Shinjuku’s alleyways among the benefits players can expect. He also describes the feature as bringing PS5 players some of the visual experience available on PS5 Pro.

Sucker Punch Productions says Ghost of Yōtei benefits from clearer small details across both characters and environments. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer / Sucker Punch Productions, says QSSR also delivers a degree of temporal stability previously unavailable on PS5. Sony plans to make the QSSR library broadly accessible to PlayStation developers, with the aim of extending support to more games.

QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s collaboration with AMD on AI graphics. An earlier PS5 Pro upgrade was scheduled for March through a software update that revised PSSR’s neural network and algorithm using work from that partnership. Resident Evil Requiem was the first game named to implement that improved version of PSSR.

Separately, Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition became available on PS5 this week, a year after the original game’s launch. It combines the campaign and Ghost of Yōtei Legends multiplayer mode with Most Wanted, a roguelike mode, and the narrative expansion Echoes of Sekigahara.
