PlayStation Plus subscribers get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III starting July 7, a timely catch-up offer for anyone who skipped the 2023 entry but plans to pick up Modern Warfare 4 when it drops on October 23. The July lineup, confirmed by Sony on Wednesday, includes three titles available through August 3: Modern Warfare III (PS5/PS4), turn-based RPG For the King II, and retro action-RPG CrossCode.
Modern Warfare III is the headliner, but it's also the game IGN's review scored 4/10, calling it "underbaked, rehashed, and cobbled together from multiplayer parts." Released just a year after 2022's Modern Warfare II, the title drew sharp criticism for its campaign. Publisher Activision has since said it will abandon the annual release cadence.
Still, the timing works in Sony's favor. Modern Warfare 4 arrives in October, and having MWIII free on PS Plus gives subscribers a zero-cost way to catch up on the story of Task Force 141's hunt for Vladimir Makarov before the sequel lands. The package includes the full campaign, 16 remastered multiplayer maps from the 2009 Modern Warfare 2, and an open-world Zombies mode.
For the King II, the sequel to IronOak Games' tabletop-inspired RPG, brings turn-based combat with roguelite progression and four-player co-op. Players explore the kingdom of Fahrul to take down Queen Rosomon.
CrossCode rounds out the month with its 16-bit-style 2D action RPG, blending physics-driven combat, puzzle dungeons, and a sci-fi storyline. The announcement arrived on July 1, later than some months, but Sony attributed the timing to the Wednesday reveal/Tuesday release cycle. The company also staggered its Extra and Premium catalog additions, adding three games on June 30 ahead of this Essential tier drop.
This month's games arrive as PlayStation pushes deeper into digital distribution. Sony confirmed it will end new physical disc production in January 2028 and plans to shut down the PS3 and PS Vita Store within the next year, marking a clear end-of-era signal for physical media collectors.
