Samsung has teased bringing silicon-carbon batteries to future Galaxy devices, saying it will decide product by product if the cells improve the customer experience. The company already applied silicon-carbon anode materials on phones for the first time to raise energy density and battery performance.
Korean coverage of a private briefing, carried by 9to5Google, framed Samsung’s battery principles as safety, stability, and long-term usability. Samsung said it applies the technology only when customers can trust it for safe use, and that product-level decisions will hinge on whether the battery helps the experience.
The tech’s draw is packing more energy into a smaller package. Silicon-carbon batteries can deliver the same capacity in less space or higher capacity in the same space, which suits foldables, compact phones, and watches that lack room for large conventional cells.
Samsung has confirmed silicon-carbon batteries in the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8, and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, making those the first Galaxy phones with the technology. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 also uses a silicon-carbon battery and may be the first Samsung watch with it.
Coverage notes the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra’s move from a prior 4,400 mAh cell to 5,000 mAh, and a slightly thinner Galaxy Z Flip 8 without cutting capacity.
Samsung did not share deeper tech details but said battery health should stay consistent with previous products. Smartphones with silicon-carbon batteries have been on the market since 2024, when HONOR debuted the approach, while Samsung stayed with traditional lithium-ion longer.
Pure silicon-carbon cells carry a higher expansion risk, so makers typically keep silicon content low. Samsung has stressed safety and longevity in how it designed these batteries, and media briefings ahead of its second Galaxy Unpacked event of 2026 put those pillars front and center for the foldable launches.
Whether silicon-carbon spreads further across Galaxy phones remains a product-by-product call tied to customer experience, not a blanket commitment in the reported remarks.
