GrapheneOS is officially coming to Motorola's 2027 flagship lineup, starting with a regular non-folding device that GrapheneOS developers hinted will succeed the Signature. The modified Android OS, which strips out Google services while running normal Android apps with stronger security, will arrive through cooperation between GrapheneOS and Motorola, with the next-gen Razr Fold and Razr Ultra following the initial launch.
The upcoming Motorola devices will meet or exceed GrapheneOS' official requirements, including seven years of "proper updates". Notably, Motorola itself is handling a large portion of the work porting GrapheneOS to its devices.
The phones will ship with Motorola's normal Android skin, and users will be able to switch to GrapheneOS later if they choose.
The timing hinges on silicon. The GrapheneOS Foundation wrote on Mastodon that the next generation of Snapdragon chips will meet its standards, which is why the OS is expected to land on Motorola devices in 2027.
Currently, only the Tensor line and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 support memory tagging, a GrapheneOS requirement, which rules out Motorola phones using the non-Elite Gen 5 chip. Starting in 2027, all Snapdragon 8 chips are expected to support MTE.
The 2026 versions of the Razr Fold and Razr Ultra are already "close" to meeting GrapheneOS requirements, just missing memory tagging and secure element integration, both of which Pixel devices support. GrapheneOS already supports the original Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and the OS maker is also working on support for 11th-generation Pixel devices.
