WWDC 2026 is 10 days away, and the iOS 27 previews already make one thing clear: this might be the first iPhone software update in years that actually forces people to buy new hardware.
Not because of the compatibility list. iOS 27 is expected to support iPhone 12 and newer, continuing Apple's six-year support window. The problem is that many of the update's marquee features require Apple Intelligence, which demands an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. That leaves iPhone 12, 13, 14, and even the non-Pro iPhone 15 users locked out of the biggest changes.
Apple Intelligence launched in 2024 with strict hardware requirements and, until now, hasn't offered enough to justify an upgrade. iOS 27 changes that calculation. The centerpiece is a fully rebuilt Siri with a Gemini-inspired LLM foundation, a dedicated chatbot app, onscreen and personal context awareness, and a new interface that lives inside the Dynamic Island.
Bloomberg published the first illustrations of the redesigned Siri this week. The images show a pill-shaped Siri bubble emerging from the Dynamic Island with a drop-down menu for Ask, Siri, and ChatGPT options.
Users can trigger it by saying "Siri," holding the power button, or swiping down from the top center of the screen anywhere in iOS 27. The new Search or Ask interface functions as a universal command center. From there. Users can launch apps, send messages, check weather, search notes, trigger app shortcuts, or query Apple's AI-powered web search.
Results appear as rich text cards that pop out of the Dynamic Island, and swiping down opens a full chatbot conversation inside the Siri app. A dedicated Siri chatbot app is also coming, resembling interfaces from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Apple has been testing integrations with Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude alongside its existing OpenAI partnership, with plans to let users route queries to third-party AI agents from the Search or Ask interface. The AI requirement extends beyond Siri. Rumored iOS 27 features tied to Apple Intelligence include new Photos app capabilities, custom wallpaper generation, subtitles for all videos, natural language Shortcuts creation, a Camera app Siri mode, and AI-powered grammar checking with photo editing tools like Extend and Reframe.
Digit reports that iOS 26.6, now in public beta, is a minor bug-fix release with only two feature-level changes spotted so far. Apple is saving its energy for WWDC on June 8, where iOS 27 will be unveiled alongside the full next-generation software slate.
Apple will include some changes for older iPhones in iOS 27. But the message from this year's update is hard to miss: the AI features that define iOS 27 require hardware from 2024 or newer.
Users on iPhone 14 or older who want the new Siri will need a new phone.
