Google is taking AI Overviews in Gmail search worldwide. The feature, which lets people type natural language questions into the Gmail search bar and get summaries instead of scrolling through messages, is now reaching paid users around the world as long as their Gmail language is set to English. Until now it was limited to users in the United States with English enabled.

The rollout is already under way for some and lands for others within days. Rapid Release domains began a gradual rollout on September 3, 2026, with visibility taking up to 15 days, and Scheduled Release domains get a full rollout starting September 21, 2026, appearing within one to three days. Personal Google Accounts are also in a gradual rollout that started September 3, 2026.

Availability covers most paid tiers. On the business side that means Business Starter, Standard and Plus, plus the equivalent Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus editions, and Frontline Plus. Consumer access runs through Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra, but personal accounts in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland and Japan are excluded. Education users are covered through Google AI Pro for Education, while AI Expanded Access is listed separately among other add-ons.

For administrators, the feature switches on by default when Gemini for Workspace in Gmail is enabled and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail is enabled. End users need both "Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet" and "Google Workspace smart features" turned on before they can use it.

The expansion follows a string of Workspace updates this month, including the Gemini desktop app for Windows 10 and 11, which Google says runs alongside existing tools with an Alt + Space shortcut for quick tasks, and automatic room check-in for Google Meet, which reached mobile in January 2026 for a limited set of early preview organizations and is now reaching all Workspace customers with Meet hardware.

Gmail search is not the only place Google has been reworking how answers and links surface. In May the company embedded AI Mode and AI Overviews citations directly beside generated text rather than in footnotes, and began labeling subscription links and naming the creators behind forum and social sources. More recently it started routing some search result links through google.com/goto?url= redirects, which hides the destination address until a reader clicks.

The announcement does not say whether the English-only requirement will ease for other languages, and it gives no timeline.
