Google Workspace has begun rolling out Gemini in Google Sheets on Android, bringing the assistant's data analysis to phones after it was previously available only on the web. The rollout started September 9, 2026, and the company says the feature can take up to 15 days to appear for everyone.
On a compatible spreadsheet, users tap the Gemini spark icon to ask questions about their data. The tool produces analytical insights and builds charts, with suggested prompts such as "Summarize this table" and "Analyze for insights".
The Android version covers less ground than the web version does. It handles data analysis and insights only, while complex edits, formatting, and formulas still require the web version of Sheets. Google's notice lists no specific Android version or device requirements.
Eligibility covers Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro for Education, and Google AI Pro and Ultra consumer subscribers. The feature is on by default for eligible users, and admins manage access through the general Gemini setting at the domain or organizational unit level rather than through a separate control for the mobile feature. Both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains are included.
Google did not state a price for the Android capability, and the announcement does not describe a separate charge. The launch follows a run of Workspace updates this month, including a Gemini co-presenter suggestion for Google Meet announced September 4, 2026, and automatic room check-in for Meet, which uses ultrasound proximity detection and is rolling out to all Workspace customers with Meet hardware.
The mobile push also echoes earlier Android moves. Tap to Share, which uses Quick Share to pass along contact info, photos, and videos, rolled out on August 12, 2026 for Pixel 6 and newer, with support promised for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8 and a wider Android expansion planned by the end of the year.
For now, the Sheets rollout gives phone users a way to interrogate a spreadsheet without opening a laptop, but anyone who needs to restructure a sheet or write formulas will still be sent back to the browser.
