Square Enix has set a Nintendo Switch 2 release date of August 4, 2026 for Final Fantasy 14, locking in the window first floated earlier this year. Director Naoki Yoshida confirmed when players can start playing on the hybrid hardware after the earlier soft target lacked a firm day.
At Final Fantasy Fan Fest Anaheim in April, Yoshida outlined Creative Studio 3’s plan to bring FF14 to Nintendo’s latest portable console and named an August release window without a calendar date. The specific August 4, 2026 launch day now replaces that broader window.
Yoshida also confirmed the date on stage at Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin. IGN reports Square Enix’s announcement of the same August 4, 2026 Switch 2 ship date.
When the game launches on August 4, it will carry a free trial for the first month while Square Enix tests the game for stability. Free Trial support is available on the platform from day one.
For paid players, the first month of service from launch day will not be restricted by the subscription because that period functions as a server test.
Players will still need to buy the game as on other platforms, and this version requires its own subscription fee separate from other platforms. Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2.
Pre-orders are available on the Switch 2 eShop for multiple editions. Nintendo Life lists Final Fantasy XIV Online Starter Edition at $19.99 / £11.99 and Complete Edition at $59.99 / £44.99, with a Complete Edition pre-order price of $41.99 / £31.49.
Complete Collector’s Edition is listed at $139.99 / £87.99, with a pre-order price of $97.99 / £61.59. Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail is listed at $39.99 / £36.99, and Dawntrail Collector’s Edition at $59.99 / £49.99, alongside the Free Trial option.
Nintendo Everything reports the launch day as Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with pre-orders opening on the Nintendo eShop. The dated release and day-one trial give Switch 2 owners a clear path into the MMO while Square Enix runs its stability window.
