Disney+ subscribers who spend more time scrolling than watching now have a new option. The service introduced Playlists today, collections of episodes and movies grouped by genre, franchise, character or mood that play back to back instead of one title at a time. The feature is rolling out globally today for all subscribers and can be found on the Disney+ homepage and elsewhere in the app.
Playlists are built for lean-back viewing. Each one plays on automatic shuffle, and viewers keep full controls, so they can pause, skip, rewind or fast-forward whenever they want rather than sitting through something they did not pick. Disney groups the collections in several ways: by genre, by franchise, by character or by mood.
The company points to examples including Action and Adventure Movies, Romantic Comedies and Pixar Movies, alongside collections built around Mickey and Friends, Bluey and Modern Family. Seasonal collections are also planned through the year, with themed and holiday-inspired sets for occasions such as Halloween and beyond. Disney frames the feature as a fix for decision fatigue, saying it spares subscribers the effort of deciding what to play next.
Disney did not disclose a separate price for Playlists, and the announcement does not say how many playlists are available at launch or how often new ones will be added.
The launch does not replace Disney+'s live offerings. U.S. subscribers keep access to the previously launched 24/7 ABC News livestream and eight ABC Owned Television Station local market streams, which carry market-specific newscasts, weather updates, community events and breaking news.
Playlists follow a run of Disney+ programming announcements in recent weeks, including the August release of Once A Princess, Always A Princess: A Disney Short Film from filmmaker Alex Prager, which anchored the company's World Princess Week celebration. That short arrived as the centerpiece of a week-long event, a different kind of content push than a browsing and playback feature.
The pitch here is less about any single title than about how subscribers move through the catalog. By bundling titles into continuous, shuffled streams, Disney is betting that removing the choice of what comes next will keep viewers watching longer, though the company has not said how playlist performance will be measured.
