Apple delivered a surprise product launch this morning with AirPods Max 2, ending years of speculation that its premium over-ear headphones were a low priority for the company.

The new model arrives with the H2 chip that brings features like Live Translation and Adaptive Audio to Apple's most expensive headphones for the first time.

Pre-orders for the $549 headphones begin March 25 with shipments starting early next month. The five color options remain unchanged from the previous USB-C model: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.

The H2 chip enables Active Noise Cancellation that Apple claims is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation. A new high dynamic range amplifier promises cleaner audio with less distortion while maintaining the sound signature of the original AirPods Max.

For content creators and musicians, AirPods Max 2 support studio-quality audio recording and can function as a camera remote when paired with iPhone or iPad cameras via the Digital Crown button.

The upgrade brings AirPods Max in line with features already available on AirPods Pro models since iOS 17 launched in September 2023. Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts noise cancellation levels based on environmental sounds, while Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when users begin speaking.

Live Translation works across multiple languages when paired with Apple Intelligence-enabled devices running iOS 26 or later. Voice Isolation prioritizes vocal clarity during calls by filtering ambient noise through computational audio processing.

Wired listening via USB-C supports 24-bit/48kHz lossless audio for professional music production workflows in Logic Pro and other applications. Reduced wireless latency improves gaming responsiveness when used with Game Mode on compatible Apple devices.

Apple's announcement comes as a surprise to industry watchers who had largely written off significant updates to the AirPods Max line after a minimal 2024 refresh that only added USB-C connectivity.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had previously reported that Apple considered Beats Studio Pro sufficient competition in the premium headphone market.

The company continues its environmental initiatives with AirPods Max 2 containing 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and recycled polyester in ear cushions.
