When your iPhone 17 Pro Max's fingerprint scanner stops responding, it locks you out of more than just your home screen. You can't approve Apple Pay purchases, access password managers, or open secure apps. The good news is that this is usually a software hiccup you can fix yourself in a few minutes.

Restart Your iPhone 17 Pro Max

This is the quickest fix and often the most effective. A force restart clears the temporary memory and can resolve the glitch preventing the Touch ID sensor from working. On the iPhone 17 Pro Max, you do this by pressing and quickly releasing the Volume Up button, then pressing and quickly releasing the Volume Down button, and finally pressing and holding the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear.

Wait for the phone to boot back up, then try placing your registered finger on the sensor. I'd start with this one, as it solves the issue a surprising amount of the time.

Check Your Finger and the Sensor

The advanced ultrasonic sensor under the display needs a clean, dry surface to read your fingerprint accurately. If your fingers are wet, greasy, or have lotion on them, wipe them off on your pants or a cloth.

Also, take a look at the screen itself. Smudges, dirt, or a particularly thick or poorly aligned screen protector can block the sensor's signals. Give the area where you place your thumb (usually the lower part of the screen) a good clean with a microfiber cloth.

If you're using a screen protector, some cheaper or thicker glass ones can cause problems. You might need to remove it temporarily to test, or look for one marketed specifically as compatible with the iPhone 17 Pro Max's ultrasonic Touch ID.

Re-register Your Fingerprint

Sometimes the stored fingerprint data gets corrupted. Removing the old print and adding it again forces the system to learn your fingerprint from scratch, which can improve accuracy dramatically.

Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode to proceed. Tap on the fingerprint that's giving you trouble and select Delete Fingerprint.

Now, tap Add a Fingerprint and follow the on-screen prompts. Make sure you rotate your finger slightly during enrollment to capture the edges, not just the flat center. This gives the system more data to work with.

Update to the Latest iOS 26 Version

Apple frequently releases software updates that include bug fixes for system components like the biometric sensors. An outdated version of iOS 26 could be the root cause of your Touch ID problems.

Open Settings and go to General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Download and Install. Make sure your iPhone 17 Pro Max is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 50% battery, or is plugged into a charger.

After the update installs and your phone restarts, test the fingerprint sensor again. This has resolved widespread Touch ID issues after major point updates in the past.

Check for Focus Modes or Accessibility Settings

Certain settings can inadvertently disable biometric authentication. First, check if you have a Focus mode active, like Work or Sleep, that's configured to lock down certain features.

Go to Settings > Focus. If one is enabled, tap on it and review the options to ensure it's not restricting Lock Screen access. Also, navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Touch.

Look for options like AssistiveTouch or Touch Accommodations. While these are helpful features, they can sometimes interfere with the normal touch layer, including the fingerprint sensor. Try disabling them temporarily to see if it makes a difference.

Reset All Settings

If the fingerprint scanner is still unresponsive, a deeper software reset might be necessary. This will revert all your system settings (like Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and privacy permissions) back to their defaults without erasing your personal data or apps.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap Reset and then choose Reset All Settings. You'll need to enter your passcode to confirm.

After the phone restarts, you'll need to re-enable things like Face ID, Touch ID, and your preferred notifications. This process often clears out any conflicting configuration that was causing the sensor to fail.

Consider Environmental Factors

The ultrasonic sensor can be sensitive to extreme conditions. If your hands are very cold or the phone itself is excessively hot from being in direct sun or during a fast charging session, recognition can temporarily fail.

Let the phone cool down if it's warm, or warm up your hands if they're cold, and try again. Also, if you've recently injured the finger you registered, like getting a cut or a burn, the sensor might not recognize the altered fingerprint pattern until it heals.
