Zoom with your keyboard or mouse
On Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, press Ctrl + + to enlarge the page or Ctrl + - to shrink it. Repeat the shortcut until the page reaches a comfortable size. Press Ctrl + 0 to return to the default.
On a Mac, press Command + + to enlarge the page or Command + - to shrink it. Press Command + 0 to reset the page to its default size.
On Windows and Linux, you can also hold Ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel up to enlarge the webpage or down to shrink it. If you prefer buttons, open Chrome’s menu and use the zoom controls.
Use Chrome’s zoom menu
On desktop Chrome, open More, the three-dot menu, and find Zoom. Select + to zoom in or − to zoom out. These controls work on Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS.
When a zoom icon appears beside the address bar, select it to open the zoom controls. Choose + or − to adjust the size, or select Reset to restore the default. The icon’s presence depends on the current zoom state and interface, so use More if you do not see it.
On a Mac, you can also open View in the macOS menu bar while Chrome is active. Choose Zoom In, Zoom Out, or Actual Size.
Choose a default page zoom
On desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Appearance. Open Page zoom and select a percentage. Choose a larger percentage for bigger content or a smaller percentage to shrink it.
A website can have a saved zoom setting separate from your default preference. If one site keeps opening at a different size, adjust its page zoom or remove its saved setting under Zoom levels, as described below.
Use touch and trackpad gestures
On a Windows device with a touchscreen or compatible touchpad, place two fingers on the webpage or touchpad. Spread them to zoom in or pinch them together to zoom out. Some touchpad gestures require a precision touchpad, so use the keyboard or Chrome menu if the gesture does not work.
On a supported Mac Multi-Touch trackpad with zoom gestures enabled, spread or pinch two fingers to zoom. With Smart zoom enabled, double-tap with two fingers to zoom in and back out; on a Magic Mouse, double-tap with one finger. Manage these gestures through the Apple menu > System Settings > Trackpad or Mouse.
On a touchscreen Chromebook, touch and hold an area with two fingers. Spread your fingers to enlarge it or pinch them together to shrink it.
Zoom in Chrome on Android
On an Android webpage, spread two fingers to zoom in or pinch them together to zoom out. A page’s gesture handling can affect this method. If the page prevents zooming, open More > Settings > Accessibility, turn on Force enable zoom, then return to the page and zoom.
To choose your default size on an Android phone or tablet, open More > Settings > Accessibility. Move the Default zoom slider to your preferred level.
For a saved site preference, open the webpage, tap More > Zoom, and adjust the slider. Chrome saves that level for the site. If Zoom is missing from the menu, turn on the zoom option under More > Settings > Accessibility.
Where the webpage and gesture configuration permit it, double-tap the page and keep your finger down after the second tap. Drag down to enlarge the content or up to shrink it. If that gesture does not work, use the menu slider.
Zoom on iPhone and iPad
Open the webpage in Chrome, then tap More > Zoom text.... At the top of the screen, tap Zoom in or Zoom out.
You can also spread two fingers on webpage content to enlarge it or pinch them together to reduce magnification. Content can intercept gestures, so use More > Zoom text... if the pinch gesture does not work.
Make text easier to read
For text-only adjustments on desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Appearance > Font size and choose a size. Select Customize fonts for additional font options. Website styling can prevent text-only changes, so use page zoom if the text does not respond.
On supported desktop text pages, open More > More tools > Reading mode. Select Font size, then choose Increase, Decrease, or Reset. These changes affect reading mode. Google says reading mode is not yet available on Googlebook.
On Android pages that offer reading mode, open More > Show Reading mode. Pull the reading mode sheet up from the bottom and scroll to your preferred font size.
On compatible iPhone and iPad pages, tap More > Turn on Reading Mode. At the top left, tap Reading mode > Font size and adjust it.
Adjust a PDF’s size
When a PDF is open in Chrome’s built-in desktop PDF viewer, select Zoom in or Zoom out in the viewer. Alternatively, select Fit to page or Fit to width to size the document within the viewer.
On Android 12 and later, open a website’s PDF link in Chrome and pinch open to enlarge the PDF or pinch closed to shrink it. Chrome’s built-in Android PDF features are unavailable in Incognito.
Fix a site that keeps using the wrong size
Start with the page reset shortcut: Ctrl + 0 on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command + 0 on Mac. This restores the applicable default. To change that default, choose a percentage under Settings > Appearance > Page zoom.
To remove a saved desktop site exception, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels. Select X beside the site. This removes its saved resize setting rather than choosing a new percentage.
If you have an extension that controls zoom, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions and turn that extension off. To uninstall it, select Remove, then select Remove again. Removing the extension does not itself choose a new page percentage, so adjust the page zoom afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does full-screen mode zoom in on a webpage?
Full-screen mode gives you more viewing space without changing the page’s zoom percentage. On desktop Chrome, open More and select Full screen beside Zoom.
How can you make Chrome’s toolbar and the rest of the Chromebook screen smaller?
On ChromeOS, press Ctrl + Shift + - to make everything smaller, or Ctrl + Shift + + to make everything larger. Press Ctrl + Shift + 0 to reset the display size. These shortcuts affect the whole screen rather than only the webpage.
How do you turn off Windows Magnifier while using Chrome?
On Windows 11, press Windows + Esc to exit Magnifier. While Magnifier is active, press Windows + - to reduce its magnification. These controls adjust system magnification rather than Chrome’s page zoom.
Why does double-tapping an Android webpage sometimes fail to zoom?
Automatic double-tap zoom mainly applies to pages that are not mobile optimized or have a reduced initial scale. You cannot expect it to work on every mobile website. When it does work, use pinch gestures to adjust or reduce the resulting magnification.
