Want someone off your Snapchat friends list? Clearing their conversation doesn't end the friendship. You can remove them directly from Chat or their profile in the Snapchat app, then adjust who can contact you afterward.
Remove a friend from Chat
Start here for the direct route to Snapchat's removal control.
These steps work in the Snapchat mobile app. You don't need a subscription or an additional download to remove a friend.
From the Camera screen, swipe right to open Chat.
Tap and hold the friend's name.
Tap Manage Friendship.
Tap Remove Friend.
If you can't complete the removal from this menu, try the friend's profile using the steps below.
Finish unfriending after clearing a conversation
Clearing a conversation removes it from your Chat feed, but leaves the friendship intact.
Muting someone also preserves the friendship. Clearing a conversation doesn't delete saved or sent content, either.
To end the friendship, open the person's profile using the next section's steps.
Use Manage Friendship to reach Remove Friend.
Use the friend's profile instead
Swipe right from the Camera screen to open Chat.
Tap the friend's profile icon to open their profile.
Tap the three-dot menu at the top.
Tap Manage Friendship.
Tap Remove Friend.
Tip: When you're already in a conversation, tap the friend's profile icon at the top to reach the same profile menu.
Opening the profile from a conversation gives you another entrance to the same removal control. Continue through the three-dot menu to manage the friendship.
Block someone to stop direct Snaps and Chats
Removed friends can still contact you when your privacy settings allow it. Blocking prevents direct Snaps and Chats and removes their name from your Friends Feed.
Blocking is available for friends and non-friends, so you can also block someone after removing them from your friends list.
In Chat, tap and hold the person's name.
Tap Manage Friendship.
Tap Block.
You can also reach that control through a conversation. For this route, tap the conversation with the person in Chat.
Tap their profile icon at the top.
Tap the three-dot menu.
Tap Manage Friendship.
Tap Block.
If you can't complete the block by holding their name in Chat, try the conversation-to-profile route above.
Limit contact after unfriending
Use this setting when you want only Snapchat friends to contact you after removing someone. It changes contact permissions without removing anyone from your friends list.
Tap your Profile icon.
Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
Scroll to App & Privacy.
Tap the setting that controls who can contact you. Snapchat's help pages label it Contact Me or Who Can Contact Me.
Choose Friends.
The Friends and Contacts option also allows your phone contacts to contact you.
Standard accounts have Friends and Friends and Contacts as their choices. Creator and business accounts may also have Everyone available in this setting.
Know what changes when you remove friends
Removed friends lose access to your private Stories and Charms. They can still see your public content, and their ability to contact you depends on your privacy settings.
Cleaning out a longer list? Snapchat doesn't let you remove multiple friends at once. Repeat Manage Friendship > Remove Friend for each person you want to unfriend.
Removing synced phone contacts is a separate operation from removing Snapchat friends. Use the friendship removal control for each Snapchat friendship you want to end.
Blocking also leaves your public content visible and doesn't remove either person from shared group chats. Keep those limits in mind when choosing between removal and blocking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I unfriend someone on Snapchat without Snapchat+?
Yes. You don't need a Snapchat+ subscription to remove a friend.
Can I remove friends by uninstalling Snapchat?
Uninstalling Snapchat isn't a friend-removal method. Use Manage Friendship > Remove Friend in the app.
Can I use a bulk-removal app to delete lots of friends?
Snapchat doesn't support unauthorized bulk-removal apps or plugins. Use the app's Remove Friend control for each person.
Can a parent unfriend someone through Family Center?
Family Center lets parents view a teen's friends and report accounts. Snapchat's Family Center feature list doesn't include remotely unfriending someone. Reporting starts a safety review and doesn't guarantee friendship removal.
