To unfollow someone on TikTok, open their profile in the mobile app and tap Following. These steps apply to the current TikTok app on iPhone and Android. If you also want to restrict communication and visibility, blocking is a stronger option that removes prior connections.

The short version

  • Unfollow an account: Open the person’s profile and tap Following.
  • Use voice controls: With accessibility controls already configured and listening, show screen numbers and speak the number for Following.
  • Block when needed: Blocking removes prior connections and restricts interaction.
  • Handle multiple commenters: You can block selected accounts from comments on your own post.

Unfollow someone from their profile

In the TikTok app on iPhone or Android, open the profile of the person you want to unfollow. Tap Following to unfollow that account. Repeat those steps on another person’s profile for each account you want to unfollow.

Use voice controls to tap Following

On a supported iPhone or iPad with a compatible TikTok app and Voice Control already configured and listening, open the person’s profile. Say Show Numbers, then speak the displayed number for Following to activate it. Use the number shown on your screen, since it changes with the screen’s controls.

On a supported Android device with compatible TikTok and Voice Access apps, use a supported spoken language and make sure Voice Access is listening. If it is not listening, tap Touch to start in its notification, then open the person’s TikTok profile. Say Show numbers and speak the displayed number for Following. Here too, use the number currently shown on your screen.

Block an account from its profile

Choose blocking when you also want to restrict communication and visibility. TikTok says blocking removes any prior connection between the accounts, so consider that broader effect before proceeding.

Open the person’s profile in the TikTok app and tap Share at the top. Tap Block at the bottom, then tap Block again to confirm.

Block accounts from comments on your post

You can select multiple accounts to block if they have commented on your own post. This removes prior connections through blocking and is a different action from bulk unfollowing.

In the TikTok app, open one of your posts and tap Comments. Press and hold a comment, then select Manage multiple comments, or tap Filters at the top. Select comments from the accounts you want to block, then tap More at the bottom. Tap Block accounts, then tap Block.

Block someone through messages

Where direct messaging is available in the TikTok app, tap Inbox. On iOS, swipe the chat, tap More, then tap Block. On Android, press and hold the chat, then tap Block. Finish either route by tapping Block to confirm.

To block someone from inside a chat, open the chat and tap More options … at the top, then turn on Block. For a filtered message request, open Inbox > Message requests > Filtered requests and select the request. Tap Tap here, then choose Block.

Report and block a message or chat

Use reporting when a message or chat violates TikTok’s rules. Where direct messaging is available, you can report the content and block the account together, which also removes prior connections.

In the TikTok app, tap Inbox and open the chat. Press and hold the relevant message, or tap More options … at the top to report the chat. Tap Report and select the applicable reason. Tap Report and block, then tap Done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is muting someone the same as unfollowing them?

No, muting posts or notifications is a separate operation from unfollowing. Changing recommendation settings is also a separate control, so choose the action that matches what you want to change.

Does removing a follower unfollow that person too?

Removing someone from your followers and unfollowing an account are separate operations. To stop following that person, open their profile and tap Following.

Why might the messaging options not apply to my account?

TikTok limits direct messaging to people aged 16 and older. The messaging routes apply only where direct messaging is available.

Should I use an automated script to unfollow accounts?

TikTok’s US terms bar using any automated system or software, including bots, to scrape or extract data from the platform without TikTok’s written approval. To unfollow accounts manually, open each person’s profile and tap Following.
