To turn off iCloud Music Library on your iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Music, then turn off Sync Library. This stops library syncing on that iPhone without canceling your Apple Music subscription. Apple Music songs are removed from the phone, while your library stays on your other devices.

The short version

  • Main setting: Open Settings > Apps > Music and turn off Sync Library.
  • Music removal: Apple Music songs are removed from this iPhone, including downloads.
  • Other devices: Your library remains on your other devices.
  • Subscription: Turning off Sync Library does not cancel Apple Music.

Turn off Sync Library in Settings

Open Settings, tap Apps, then choose Music. Turn off Sync Library to stop using the synced music library on this iPhone. Use this setting when you want to keep your subscription but stop syncing this phone.

The current switch is named Sync Library, even if you know the feature as iCloud Music Library. Look under Settings > Apps > Music. You do not need to install a tool or download an app.

Understand what happens to your music

Turning off Sync Library removes Apple Music songs from this iPhone, including songs downloaded for offline listening. Your music library remains on your other devices. Purchased music and music synced from a computer are preserved.

Your Apple Music subscription continues because the switch controls library syncing, not billing. If you also want to stop paying, you need to cancel the subscription separately. Cancellation affects subscription access across devices, while this switch changes syncing on this iPhone.

Check your account if the switch is missing

Sync Library requires Apple Music or iTunes Match access. If the setting is missing, check that your iPhone uses the Apple Account associated with that subscription. Using a different media account prevents access to the original subscription and its synced library.

Look in Settings > Apps > Music for the switch. Download and storage controls are separate settings. Changing them does not turn off library syncing.

Use Voice Control or your Mac

With Voice Control already configured, open Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control and enable it, or ask Siri to turn on Voice Control. Navigate to Settings > Apps > Music using spoken taps. With Sync Library on, say Tap Sync Library to operate the switch; use Show Numbers to identify it when needed.

Voice Control requires iOS 13 or later and works in supported languages and regions. It operates the same onscreen switch, so turning it off has the same effect as tapping it yourself.

To operate the setting from a Mac, open iPhone Mirroring and complete its connection prompts. In the mirrored iPhone interface, click Settings > Apps > Music, then turn off Sync Library.

iPhone Mirroring requires iOS 18 or later and macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon or a T2 chip. Both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled and the locked iPhone nearby with a passcode. Apple lists iPhone Mirroring as unavailable in the European Union.

Disconnect your media account

Signing out of Media & Purchases disconnects this iPhone from that account's media services. Open Settings, tap your name, then select Media & Purchases > Sign Out > Confirm. Remain signed out to keep the phone disconnected.

This change affects other Apple media services and removes downloaded Apple-service content. Use it when you want to disconnect the media account itself. If you sign back in later, check Sync Library again rather than assuming it will stay off.

Cancel Apple Music from your iPhone

To stop paying for Apple Music, open Settings, tap your name, then choose Subscriptions. Select your Apple Music subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. You can follow the steps to cancel subscriptions on your iPhone when ending billing is your goal.

Cancellation takes effect when your subscription expires, so it does not immediately stop syncing on this phone. Apple says Apple Music expiration turns off Sync Library, but separate iTunes Match, family or bundled access may remain. Turn off the switch directly if you want syncing to stop now.

On iOS 27, you can also open Music and tap the My Account button or your profile picture. Choose Your Name > Subscriptions, select Apple Music, then complete cancellation using Cancel Subscription.

On iOS 26, open Music and tap the My Account button or your profile picture. Choose Manage Subscription, then complete cancellation using Cancel Subscription. Use the path that matches your Music account interface.

Cancel Apple Music from another device

You can cancel the same subscription from an iPad or Apple Vision Pro by opening Settings and tapping your name. Choose Subscriptions, select the subscription, then choose Cancel Subscription. This ends the account's subscription rather than changing only your iPhone's setting.

On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then click your name on the account page. Open Subscriptions, select the subscription, then choose Cancel Subscription.

On Windows, open Apple Music or Apple TV, click your name, then choose View My Account. Under Settings, find Subscriptions and select Manage. Select the subscription, choose Edit, then click Cancel Subscription.

For browser cancellation, open Apple Music on the web and choose Sign In if needed. Open My Account > Settings > Subscriptions > Manage, then select Cancel Subscription.

You can also sign in on the Apple Account website and follow the cancellation prompts. If your carrier or another provider bills you, contact that provider to cancel. The cancellation route depends on who manages your billing.

In Apple Music on Android, open the menu button and choose Account > Manage Subscription > Cancel Subscription. Complete the prompts for the subscription associated with your iPhone. If Google Play bills you, use its subscription controls.

Cancel a subscription billed through Google Play

On Android, open Settings > Google > Your name > Manage your Google Account. Choose Payments & subscriptions > Manage subscriptions. Select Apple Music, choose Cancel subscription, then follow the instructions.

In a browser, sign in to the Google Account used for billing and open your Google Play subscriptions. For Apple Music, choose Manage > Cancel subscription. Select a reason in the confirmation popup, then choose Continue.

Google Play cancellation ends the subscription after its remaining paid period. It does not immediately operate your iPhone's Sync Library switch. Other Apple Music or iTunes Match access may still let you use library syncing.

Remove family access or restrict a managed iPhone

If your Apple Music access comes from Family Sharing, leaving the group removes that shared access along with other shared services. Independent Apple Music or iTunes Match access may remain, and age or parental-control restrictions can limit leaving. These actions change shared access rather than directly operating Sync Library.

To leave on your iPhone, open Settings > Family, select your name, then choose Stop Using Family Sharing. On a Mac, open System Settings > Family, select your name, then choose Stop Using Family Sharing. To leave online, sign in on the Apple Account website and choose Family Sharing > Disconnect Account > Disconnect.

If you are the organizer, you can remove a member on iPhone through Settings > Family. Select the member, then choose Remove [name] from Sharing Group. On Mac, open System Settings, select your name, choose Family, select the member, then choose Remove [name] from Sharing Group and confirm.

To disband the group as its organizer on iPhone, open Settings > Family, select your name, then choose Stop Using Family Sharing. On Mac, open System Settings > Family, select your name, then choose Stop. Disbanding affects the group's shared services, so use the iPhone music switch if you only want to stop syncing your phone.

If you administer a supervised iPhone, you can deploy a Restrictions payload with allowMusicService set to false. Apple says this disables the Music service and reverts Music to classic mode. Management-console labels depend on your vendor, and this service restriction is not a dedicated Sync Library switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Siri turn off Sync Library directly?

You can use Siri to turn on Voice Control after its initial setup, then operate the onscreen Sync Library switch by voice.

Does deleting the Music app permanently turn off iCloud Music Library?

Apple's iPhone guide uses the Sync Library switch in Settings > Apps > Music to remove Apple Music songs from iPhone, so use that switch instead of deleting the app. Deleting Music removes related user data and configuration files and affects Music functionality, including CarPlay.

Can I remove downloads without deleting songs from my library?

Use Remove Download for local download removal rather than Delete from Library. Delete from Library can also delete the item on other devices. Neither control turns off Sync Library.

Can Screen Time block library syncing instead?

Screen Time's Media & Apple Music privacy control regulates app access. It does not provide a supported Sync Library off switch.

Do Automatic Downloads or Optimize Storage turn off syncing?

Neither Automatic Downloads nor Optimize Storage disables Sync Library. These settings manage downloads and storage separately from library syncing.

Is there a shortcut or Control Center switch for Sync Library?

Apple documents the Sync Library switch in Settings > Apps > Music for this setting. To operate it hands-free or from a Mac, use Voice Control or iPhone Mirroring on the same switch.
