YouTube says content is not available when you use an unsupported app, playback fails, or the video has an access restriction. Start with the exact error message: an app warning calls for official YouTube, while a private video, age requirement, or country restriction calls for an access check.

The short version

  • Unsupported app: Open the video in the official YouTube app or at youtube.com.
  • Temporary error: Reload the video, restart the app or browser, and retry.
  • Access restriction: Check the account, age requirement, privacy status, or country wording shown in the error.
  • Playback failure: Check your connection, update YouTube, and follow the fixes for your browser or device.

Open official YouTube and reload the video

For “The following content is not available on this app,” open the video in the official YouTube app or at youtube.com. If you need the app, install it from the YouTube Google Play listing or the YouTube App Store listing. On mobile, use m.youtube.com when updating the app is impossible.

On the website, select Reload in the error message or click the browser’s refresh button. In desktop Chrome on Windows or Linux, press F5 or Ctrl + R. To reload while ignoring cached content, press Shift + F5 or Ctrl + Shift + R.

When the video is embedded on another website, select Watch on YouTube in the player. For embedded player error 153, the website operator must supply the required HTTP Referer information; you can open the direct YouTube page. If a temporary loading error persists, wait and retry.

Check whether your account can watch the video

Sign in to YouTube and reopen the video, since some content restricts signed out viewing. Sign in only through YouTube’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

A private video requires permission from its uploader. Ask the uploader to grant access, then sign in with the exact account invited and open the video’s direct link. If you need the video in Google Classroom, the owner may need to change its visibility to Unlisted.

For an age restricted video, open it directly on YouTube and sign in with an eligible adult account. Complete age verification if YouTube requests it. Signed out viewers and viewers under 18 cannot watch age restricted videos.

Check content filters and video availability

If you control an unlocked Restricted Mode setting, you can turn it off. On desktop, select your profile photo, open Restricted Mode, and turn off Activate Restricted Mode. In the Android, iPhone, or iPad app, select your profile photo, open Settings > General, and turn off Restricted Mode.

On the mobile website, select your profile photo, open Settings > Account, and turn off Restricted Mode. The setting applies separately to each browser or device. If a school, workplace, library, or mobile carrier enforces filtering, ask the network administrator or carrier to change it.

Country or region wording points to restrictions caused by the owner’s licensing choices or local laws. For a deleted upload, ask the uploader for a replacement link. Deletion is permanent, a new upload receives a different URL, and browser troubleshooting cannot restore the original upload.

Check the connection and lower video quality

Run a connection speed test and reduce competing network use. YouTube recommends approximately 5 Mbps for 1080p playback and 20 Mbps for 4K. On a phone or cellular tablet, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then replay the video; mobile data charges may apply.

If YouTube cannot use cellular data on an iPhone, open Settings > Cellular. Enable Cellular Data and enable YouTube in the app list. On a cellular iPad, the settings section may be called Cellular Data.

For connection problems in the mobile app, open the player’s Settings > Quality and choose Data saver. Alternatively, select Advanced and choose a lower resolution. On a TV, open the player’s Settings > Quality and select a lower resolution. Lowering quality can help connection problems but does not change access restrictions.

If an application changed your DNS configuration, restore your intended settings. On Android, open Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS, choose Automatic or your intended Private DNS provider hostname, and tap Save. Manufacturer menus can differ, so check your device’s network settings for its DNS controls.

Restart and update the YouTube app

Close YouTube and reopen it before making more involved changes. On a current Pixel phone, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > YouTube > Force stop, tap OK, and reopen YouTube. Other Android manufacturers can use different paths.

For an unresponsive app on a Face ID iPhone, swipe up from the bottom and pause, find YouTube, then swipe its preview upward. On a supported iPhone with a Home button, double-click Home, find YouTube, and swipe its preview upward. Reopen the app and retry the video.

To update YouTube on Android, open the Google Play Store, select your profile picture, and open Manage apps & device > Updates available. Find YouTube and tap Update. On an iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, select your profile icon, open App Updates, and update YouTube when an update is offered.

If the official Android app still reports unsupported content after updating, update Google Play itself. Open Google Play, select your profile picture, and choose Settings > About > Update Play Store, then tap Got it. An available update downloads and installs automatically.

Clearing the Android YouTube cache removes its cached data. Open Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage, tap Clear cache, and replay the video. Some devices label the app list Applications or the storage section Storage & cache.

Older phones and tablets may need a system update to run a supported YouTube app. Check the manufacturer’s system update settings. If the device cannot run a supported app, try m.youtube.com in its browser.

Check browser extensions and playback settings

Close and reopen your browser, and close unnecessary tabs before retrying. In desktop Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome, let Chrome check for updates, and select Relaunch when offered. Linux installations may require the package manager, while ChromeOS updates through the operating system.

YouTube says ad blocking can lead to blocked playback. In AdBlock, Adblock Plus, or another blocker, select the extension icon, turn off blocking for YouTube through its own controls, and reload YouTube.

To check other Chrome extensions, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Disable extensions and retest them individually. You can also open More > New Incognito Window and try YouTube, making sure extensions permitted in Incognito are disabled too.

Check JavaScript in desktop Chrome by opening More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Javascript. Select Sites can use Javascript, then reload YouTube. On current iPhone and iPad Safari, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and turn on JavaScript.

Deleting Chrome cookies and cache removes those stored files and may require you to sign back in. Open More > Delete browsing data, choose All time, and select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data. Deselect unrelated categories, select Delete data, and sign back in if necessary.

Restart YouTube on your TV

Press the remote’s Home button and reopen YouTube. If playback still fails, unplug the TV or streaming device for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and retry.

On Apple TV, open the App Store, search for YouTube, select YouTube, and choose Update. On Android TV, press Home, then open Apps > Google Play Store > Settings > Auto-Update Apps > Auto-update apps at any time. The Android TV setting restores automatic app updates.

For a personally controlled content filter on Android TV, open YouTube and select Settings > Restricted Mode > Off. If the displayed label is Safety Mode, select that instead and choose Off. This setting affects that TV.

Check the manufacturer’s system update settings if the TV or streaming device is older. When it cannot run a supported YouTube app, try youtube.com in the TV’s browser, although playback there is not guaranteed. You can also try casting from another device to Chromecast or connecting a laptop by HDMI; access restrictions still apply.

Report a persistent playback error

Try the video on another supported device if the affected device still cannot play it. For a persistent website problem, select your profile picture, choose Send feedback, describe the error, and click Send. On a supported TV, Chromecast, or console, open the player’s Settings > Feedback, select a reason, and choose Submit Report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I see a video thumbnail but cannot play the video?

A members-only video can show you its title or thumbnail without giving you playback access. Check whether your signed-in account has the membership level required for that video.

Why does a music video ask for YouTube Music Premium?

Some music-rights agreements restrict videos to paying audiences. If the message explicitly requires YouTube Music Premium, use an account with the qualifying membership or review the membership options linked by YouTube.

Why are purchased movies missing while I use a Brand Account?

On YouTube for Android, switch to the personal account associated with your purchase. Select your profile picture, select the arrow beside the account name, and choose that personal account.

What can a parent check for a supervised child account?

As the linked parent, open Family Link, select your child, and open Controls > Content restrictions > YouTube, then review YouTube Settings. Alternatively, in your YouTube app, open You > Settings > Family Center, select your child’s profile, and select EDIT beside Content Settings. Available content remains limited by the supervised experience.

What can help interrupted Primetime Channels live playback?

In the TV player, open Settings > Broadcast Delay > Default. Restoring the default delay reduces the interruption risk associated with a smaller playback buffer.
