To fix Teams and Outlook not working on Android, check Microsoft service status and your connection, update both apps, then force-stop and reopen the affected app. If messages arrive only when you open an app, check background restrictions and notification settings. For work accounts, also check your work profile and Company Portal before removing accounts or reinstalling apps.

The short version

  • Both apps fail: Check Microsoft service status and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data first.
  • Apps freeze: Install updates, force-stop the affected app, and clear its cache.
  • Alerts are missing: Review notification permissions, quiet time, and background restrictions.
  • Reset last: Reinstalling an app can remove locally saved app data.

Check the connection and Microsoft service status

Check Microsoft service status at status.cloud.microsoft before changing app settings. For a work or school account, ask your administrator to review Teams and Exchange Online incidents under Health > Service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Administrators can also check Service health in the Microsoft 365 Admin app.

Open Settings > Network & internet, or Connections on phones using that label. Turn Wi-Fi off and mobile data on, then try Teams and Outlook. Reverse those settings and try again to see whether the failure follows one connection.

For a stalled cellular connection, turn Mobile data or Cellular data off and back on. Alternatively, turn on Airplane Mode, wait 10 seconds, then turn it off. Retry the affected app after the connection returns.

If other internet activity also fails over Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and retry. For your home router, disconnect its power, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow it to restart. Contact your internet provider or the network owner if the connection still fails.

Update the apps and check Android compatibility

Open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and select Manage apps & devices > Updates available. Install available updates for Teams, Outlook, Authenticator, and Company Portal where installed, then reopen the affected apps. If your organization manages the installations, updates may require its approval or distribution.

Check your Android version under Settings > About phone or About tablet > Android version. Teams supports the latest four major Android versions, while current Outlook requires Android 10.0 or later. If your phone falls outside an app's requirements, upgrade Android where possible or use a supported device.

For Android updates, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow your device's installation instructions. Availability depends on the manufacturer, model, and carrier. Restart after installation when required.

On a Pixel 6 or later, including Fold, restart by holding Power + Volume up for a few seconds, then tapping Restart. If a Pixel is unresponsive, hold Power for up to 60 seconds and release it when the G logo appears. These button instructions apply to Pixel phones.

Force stop the app and refresh local data

For Outlook crashes or stale data, open Settings > Apps > Outlook and tap Force stop. Reopen Outlook and check it again. For a frozen Teams app, open its Android app settings and use Force stop, then reopen Teams.

Clear Outlook's cache through Settings > Apps > Outlook > Storage > Clear cache. On Samsung Galaxy, select Teams or Outlook under Apps, open Storage, and tap Clear cache. Cache clearing preserves app data; reopen the app afterward.

Outlook's account reset resets synchronization for the selected account. If account data remains incomplete, incorrect, or stale, open Outlook's Settings, select the email account, and tap Reset Account. If your version groups accounts under Accounts, open that first, select the account, and tap Reset Account, then check synchronization again.

Restore access to managed work apps

If Teams and Outlook are inside a paused work profile, swipe down to Quick Settings and activate the work tile; an illuminated tile means the profile is running. Alternatively, open the app drawer's Work tab and resume work apps. If the problem repeats on a schedule, review Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Work apps schedule > Schedule work apps.

On an Intune-managed phone, sign in to Company Portal and open Settings > Management Policy > Sync. Wait for the successful synchronization timestamp, then retry the work app. To check compliance, select DEVICES, choose your device, and tap Check device settings.

If Company Portal displays the prompt, tap You need to update settings on this device, complete the listed changes, and run Check device settings again. If the phone app is inaccessible, sign in to the Company Portal website from another browser or device. Open Devices, select your device, then choose Status > Check status and follow the displayed requirements.

If organizational access remains blocked, select More Details on the sign-in error and give IT the error details and time. An authorized administrator can open Microsoft Entra admin center > Entra ID > Monitoring & health > Sign-in logs, select the failed event, and examine Conditional Access and Troubleshooting and support. The administrator can also open Basic info > Troubleshoot Event for sign-in diagnostics.

Allow background activity and mobile data

On a Samsung Galaxy with these controls, open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. Under Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, open More options > Remove apps, select Teams, Outlook, or Authenticator, and tap Remove. This removes the selected app from the sleeping list.

Under Never sleeping apps, tap +, select the affected app, then tap Add. Newer Samsung interfaces also use the label Never auto sleeping apps. These controls address restrictions on background activity.

For a Pixel that fails to update the apps over mobile data, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver and turn off Data Saver for a comparison test. Alternatively, allow Unrestricted data for the affected app so it can use background mobile data while Data Saver remains enabled.

If Outlook stops syncing because Android restricts Authenticator, including when manual refresh fails, change Authenticator's battery access. On Pixel or Android One, open Settings > Apps > Authenticator > App battery usage > Unrestricted. On Samsung, use Settings > Apps > Authenticator > Battery > Unrestricted.

For Xiaomi MIUI or HyperOS, open Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Authenticator > Battery saver > No restrictions. Return to Outlook and swipe down on the message list to refresh it.

Restore missing notifications

If messages load but alerts do not arrive, open Teams, select your profile picture, and tap Notifications. Enable Show notifications and inspect the categories missing alerts. If Android has blocked notifications, tap Open settings and enable Show notifications there.

Within Teams, open your profile picture > Notifications > Block notifications. Turn off When active on other devices or When in meetings if those conditions explain the silence. Review In-app notifications as well.

For alerts missing on a schedule, open Block during quiet hours within Block notifications. Adjust or disable Certain hours and All Day. Check Set on Teams and Outlook, which can synchronize quiet time across apps and devices signed into the same Microsoft account.

To fix missing Outlook email notifications, open Outlook's left navigation menu, then Settings > Notifications > Email. Choose All if you want alerts for every message, and review sounds and any Do Not Disturb or Quiet Time periods. For calendar alerts, select Calendar instead of Email.

On a Pixel with the current Modes interface, swipe down to Quick Settings, open Modes, and turn off an active Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, or other silencing mode. To keep the mode active while allowing an app, open Settings > Modes, select the mode, then choose Notification filters > Apps. Allow the affected app there.

Fix calling permissions and missing Outlook data

For Teams calling or video problems, open Settings > Apps, select Teams, and open Permissions. Select the needed camera or microphone permission, then choose Allow or Allow only while using the app, depending on the choices shown. Grant permissions relevant to the failing feature.

You can also manage permissions through Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, then select the permission type and app. Under Unused app settings, review Pause app activity if unused.

On Android 12 and later with system privacy controls, open Settings > Security & privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls. Enable Camera access and Microphone access as needed. You can also reach the camera and microphone controls by swiping down twice to Quick Settings.

For missing Outlook contact integration, open Android Settings > Apps > Outlook > Permissions and allow Contacts. Then open Outlook's Settings > Contacts > Sync Contacts and enable the relevant account. These settings address contact export rather than email delivery.

For an Outlook.com personal account, a full Microsoft cloud quota can prevent sending and receiving even when the Android app works. Sign in to Outlook.com and open Settings > Account > Storage to review usage and available cleanup or storage options. Outlook.com also provides a mobile cleanup interface, and Outlook's Filters > Attachments helps you locate large messages.

Missing messages can also be filtered or redirected. In Outlook.com, inspect Other, Junk Email, active filters, forwarding, and rules. For incorrect message ordering, choose Filter > Sort > Date.

Resolve sign in and account problems

Start sign-in from the official Outlook or Teams app or Microsoft’s own website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you. For a Google account, Outlook can redirect you to Google's sign-in page as part of that flow. If your personal Microsoft account will not sign in, open Microsoft's sign-in help and select Start. For a work or school account, select Reset password to use your organization's reset portal, or contact IT if it is unavailable. For Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud, or another provider used in Outlook, use that provider's recovery process.

If Authenticator approval prompts are missing, open Authenticator > Settings > Notification Settings and enable Show notifications. In Settings, select Turn off battery optimization where available. Ensure the phone's date and time are accurate and automatic, then restart after correcting the clock. For work accounts, Google Play services and Google Play Store must be installed and enabled.

For Authenticator registration errors, inspect Settings > Device Registration; device registration primarily concerns organizational passwordless authentication. For error 4s8qz, wait briefly, open Authenticator to check that it works and lists your account, update Authenticator and Company Portal, and restart. If authentication fails because of a VPN, try disconnecting it only if organizational policy permits.

Signing out ends your Teams session. In Teams mobile, open More > Settings > Sign out, then sign in again. For Teams personal, select your profile picture or More, open Accounts and Orgs, select the account, then open Settings > Sign out. Tap Sign out and sign in again.

Removing an Outlook account deletes its local account configuration. If the problem follows a password change or persists after an account reset, open Outlook's Settings, select the affected account, and tap Delete Account > Delete From This Device. To add it again, open Menu > Settings > Account > Add Account > Add an email account, enter the address, and complete your provider's authentication. For Google accounts, Microsoft also provides Add Google Account.

Reset or reinstall the app and get support

Clearing app data removes local settings and app data, so preserve unsynchronized work first. On Samsung Galaxy versions with these controls, open Settings > Apps, select Teams or Outlook, then choose Storage > Clear data and tap Delete. Reopen and configure the app again; organizational restrictions may prevent resetting managed apps.

If Outlook installation incorrectly reports an incompatible operating system on Android 10 or later, open Settings > Apps or Applications > More > Show system > Google Play Services. Select Storage & cache or Storage, then tap Clear cache.

The next step resets shared Google service data, so reserve it for that compatibility error. Tap Manage space > Clear all data, open Google Play Store, wait five minutes, and retry.

Uninstalling can remove locally saved app data. For an app you can remove, open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then open Manage apps & devices > Manage. Select Microsoft Teams or Microsoft Outlook and tap Uninstall. Managed or preinstalled apps may restrict removal; use your organizational helpdesk or the support options below if removal is blocked.

Reinstall Teams through its Google Play listing or Microsoft's Teams download page. For Outlook, use its Google Play listing or open Microsoft's Outlook mobile page and select Download the Android app. Sign in again after installation.

If Outlook still fails but opens far enough to reach support, go to the message list, tap your profile photo, then ? > Contact Outlook Mobile Support. Keep Outlook notifications enabled so you receive replies inside the app.

For persistent Teams notification failures, open your profile picture > Settings > Help and feedback > Send feedback, and include your device, app version, symptoms, and steps that reproduce the problem. For an organizational account, you can also give these details to your helpdesk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use Teams in an Android browser while the app is broken?

Microsoft does not support Teams for Web in mobile browsers, including Android browser desktop mode. For temporary access, use a supported version of Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer.

Why does Outlook sync email but not the calendar?

POP and IMAP accounts do not provide calendar synchronization. In Outlook, open Settings > Accounts and select the account to inspect its setup, then ask your email provider or administrator for a supported account setup.

Why does an Outlook.com message fail to send with an attachment?

Outlook.com rejects attachments larger than 25 MB. Check the attachment size, the recipient address, and any non-delivery report to identify the sending failure.

Should you follow older Teams battery optimization instructions?

The older instructions using Battery Optimization and Don't optimize apply to Android 6.0.1, while older Samsung instructions use Unmonitored apps. Use your current manufacturer's battery controls on current devices.

Can Google Assistant turn off notification silencing?

On devices still providing Google Assistant with Voice Match, English (US), and the required shared Google account, say Hey Google, then say Take my phone off silent. Another supported command on that Assistant surface is Turn off Do Not Disturb on all devices. These commands apply to Google Assistant; do not assume they work identically with Gemini.
