Google AI Mode may be unavailable for your account because of location, language or feature eligibility, the selected Google Account, or an app or browser access problem. Start by checking the affected account on Google’s direct AI Mode website. Standard AI Mode and the AI Mode experiment in Search Labs have separate eligibility requirements.

The short version

  • Start with direct access: Try google.com/ai with the affected account to separate a missing shortcut from an access problem.
  • Check the account: Confirm that Google Search is using the account you intended.
  • Separate Labs eligibility: Requirements for the Search Labs experiment do not apply universally to standard AI Mode.
  • Repair the affected app: Use app or browser troubleshooting when AI Mode works elsewhere with the same account.

Try the direct AI Mode website

Open Google’s AI Mode website in a desktop or mobile browser and try the affected account. If it works there but not in the Google app, that suggests an app or entry point problem. Continue using the website while you troubleshoot the affected app.

You can also open www.google.com, submit a question and select AI Mode. In the Google app on Android or iPhone, open the home screen and tap AI Mode. If these entry points are missing, check access through the direct website before changing app settings.

Google says Chrome’s AI Mode integration is not available to everyone or every device. On desktop Chrome with the visibility control, right-click the address bar and select Always show AI Mode. This restores button visibility without changing account eligibility.

Confirm which Google Account is selected

On a desktop browser, open www.google.com and select your profile image or initial. Select the intended account, then try AI Mode again. If the account is absent, select Add account and sign in.

Sign in only through Google’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you. Comparing accounts in the same browser can help isolate the problem: if one works and another does not, the difference suggests an account-specific issue.

Signing out ends the selected Google session or all Google Account sessions in that browser, depending on the option you choose. If Google keeps using an unintended default account, select your profile image or initial on a Google webpage, then select Sign out or Sign out of all accounts. Sign back in with the intended account first and retest, since Google says the first account signed in often becomes the default.

Check availability and Search language

Google AI Mode availability varies by location, language, account and feature. Open Google’s AI Mode help, find AI Mode availability, and check Supported countries & territories and Supported languages. Check the specific capability you want because experimental features can have narrower eligibility.

On desktop Google Search, open Search settings > Display language, select a supported language and click Confirm. In the Android Google app, tap your profile icon and open Settings > Language & region > Search language, then select the language. To change the whole Android Google app’s language, open Settings > Other Settings > App language. Changing language does not establish regional or account eligibility.

An inaccurate birthday can matter for age-restricted experiments and features. Open your Google Account, select Personal info > Birthday, and correct your actual birthday using the editing controls. Google may request age verification afterward, and correcting this information is not a guaranteed AI Mode repair.

Check Search Labs only for the experiment

The AI Mode experiment in Search Labs requires a personal Google Account you manage yourself, an age of at least 18 and a normal browser session with Incognito off. Workspace and Workspace for Education accounts cannot enroll in this experiment. These restrictions apply to the experiment, so check standard AI Mode access separately.

On desktop, while signed in, open a new tab and select Search Labs > Manage, then turn on AI Mode. On iPhone or iPad, use a signed-in browser, select Search Labs > Manage, and turn on AI Mode. These controls enable the experiment for eligible accounts.

On Android, use a signed-in browser with Incognito off and open Labs > Manage. Find the experiment and select Turn on; if its card offers a waitlist instead, tap Join Waitlist. A missing Labs icon means Labs is not currently available to you, so return to the direct AI Mode website to check standard access.

Ask your administrator about managed access

If your organization manages Chrome, ask your administrator to review its AI Mode integration policy. As an administrator, open Admin console > Devices > Chrome > Settings, then open User & browser settings and select the relevant organizational unit. Find Google AI Mode integrations, select Allow AI Mode integrations, and click Save. Google says this policy applies only when Google is the user’s default search engine, so also confirm that setting for the affected Chrome profile. In Chrome Enterprise Core, use Chrome browser > Settings instead; users cannot override enforced organization policies.

For missing Workspace history or account integration, ask your administrator to check the Search and Assistant service. As an administrator, open Admin console > Apps > Additional Google services > Search and Assistant > Service status, select On for everyone or enable the appropriate organizational unit, then click Save. Google says standard AI Mode can still work with this service off. Enabling it restores account-linked functionality and does not establish Search Labs eligibility.

Repair the Google app when web access works

Start with an update when the same account works on the website but the Google app fails. On Android, open Google Play Store, tap your profile icon and select Manage apps & device. Under Updates available, tap See details, then tap Update next to Google or Chrome.

If the Android Google app still malfunctions, open the phone’s Settings > Apps > Google App, select Force stop and tap OK. Some devices call the app category Application manager. Reopen Google and try AI Mode again.

Clearing the cache removes the app’s cached data. For continued loading or display trouble, return to Settings > Apps or Application manager > Google App, open Storage or Cache, and tap Clear cache. Reopen the app afterward; menu labels vary by device.

If your Android device is unresponsive, Google’s generic instructions say to hold Power for about 30 seconds or until it restarts. Some phones then require you to tap Restart, followed by Restart again. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions if your model uses different buttons.

On iPhone or iPad, close and reopen the Google app, then restart the device if needed. To check for an update, open App Store, tap your profile icon and open App Updates. Update Google when an update is offered, then retry AI Mode.

Fix Chrome loading problems

If the AI Mode page fails to load, select Reload this page and check whether other websites load. When several sites fail, check your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, complete any public Wi-Fi sign-in, and restart the router if necessary. If Chrome is running out of memory, close unused tabs.

Update desktop Chrome by opening More > Help > About Google Chrome. Let the update check finish and select Relaunch when offered. On Linux, update through your package manager; on a Chromebook, update ChromeOS.

In desktop Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, turn extensions off and retry. If that fixes loading, turn them back on one at a time to identify the extension causing it. Removing the identified extension uninstalls it from Chrome. To do that, select Remove, then confirm by selecting Remove again.

Deleting cookies and cached files removes that browser data, can remove website preferences and may require you to sign in again. For a continuing local session or loading problem, open More > Delete browsing data in desktop Chrome and choose the relevant time range. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Delete data and retest after signing in if required.

Use resets and reinstalls after simpler fixes

Clearing Google-app search data deletes app data and settings. On Android builds with these controls, open Settings > Apps or Application manager > Google App > Storage > Manage space, then select Clear Google search data. This resets local app data rather than account eligibility; skip it if your device does not expose those controls.

Uninstalling removes the affected app from your Android device. For a removable app, open Settings > Apps > See all apps, select the affected app, choose Uninstall, and tap OK, then reinstall it from its official store listing. Google excludes Pixel essential apps from this procedure, so do not assume your preinstalled Google app supports removal.

Deleting the Google app from an iPhone or iPad may lose local app data. If simpler repairs fail and app deletion is allowed, touch and hold Google, select Remove App > Delete App, and tap Delete. Download it again through the platform-specific store link on Google’s official app page, then retry.

Resetting desktop Chrome affects browser settings and extensions. After simpler browser fixes fail, open More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults, then select Reset settings. This addresses browser settings without changing Google Account eligibility.

Report an unresolved account problem

If the issue remains specific to your account, send Google the exact error and the details needed to distinguish it from an app problem. In the Android Google app, tap your profile picture or initial and select Help & feedback > Send Feedback. Describe the affected account, app or browser version, country, language and whether google.com/ai works, then tap Send.

From a mobile browser, you can instead select More > Feedback beside a Google search result, describe the problem and tap Send. For a temporary Google-app failure that persists after ordinary troubleshooting, retry in a few hours. If only Chrome’s integration is missing and direct AI Mode access works, continue using the website while that integration rolls out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open AI Mode with a keyboard shortcut in Chrome?

On desktop Chrome where AI Mode integration has rolled out, Google documents Tab + Enter as a keyboard route. You can also select AI Mode beside the search box on the New Tab page or on the right of the address bar, then enter your question.

Can I add AI Mode to my iPhone’s Control Center?

Yes, on iOS 18 or later with the Google app and eligible AI Mode access. Swipe down from the top-right corner, tap Plus > Add a Control, search for Google and select AI Mode. Tap the background to save.

How do I inspect or restore the Android Google Search widget?

Open the Google app, tap your profile picture or initial, select Settings > Customize Search widget, and inspect Shortcuts below the preview. To add the widget, tap Add. Alternatively, touch and hold an empty Home-screen area, select Widgets > Google, then drag the widget into place. Available shortcuts can vary, so customization does not guarantee an AI Mode option for your account.

Can I access Google’s live voice search through the Google app?

In supported AI Mode regions and languages, tap Live below the Search bar in the Google app on Android or iOS. You can also open Google Lens and tap Live below the shutter button. Search Live requires microphone permission for the Google app and does not bypass eligibility requirements.
