To view coordinates in Minecraft, press F3 in Java Edition, or pause Bedrock Edition, open Settings > Game, and turn on Show Coordinates under World Options. Java also lets you keep your position visible with the full debug overlay closed.

Use the Java instructions for Java Edition on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Use the Bedrock instructions for Bedrock Edition on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iPhone, or iPad.

The short version

  • Java Edition: Press F3 and read the XYZ or Block values.
  • Persistent Java display: Press F3 + F6, find player_position, and select Always.
  • Bedrock Edition: Turn on Show Coordinates in your world's game settings.
  • Shared worlds: You may need the owner or an authorized operator to enable coordinate access.

Show coordinates in Java Edition

While playing, press F3 to open the debug overlay. Read XYZ for your precise position or Block for your block coordinates. Press F3 again to close the overlay.

To keep your coordinates visible, press F3 + F6 to open Debug Options. Find player_position, select Always, then close the options screen. Your position remains visible with the main debug overlay closed.

Select In Overlay to show your position only inside the overlay, or select OFF to hide it. These configurable debug elements were introduced in Java Edition 1.21.9, so older versions may lack the option.

Show coordinates in Bedrock Edition

Open the pause menu, select Settings > Game, and scroll to World Options. Turn on Show Coordinates, then return to your world. Read your location in the Position display.

To enable coordinates before creating a world, select Play > Create New > Create New World. In the world settings, turn on Show Coordinates. Select Create to enter the world with the display enabled.

Enable coordinates on a Bedrock Realm or server

As a Bedrock Realm owner or authorized admin, join the Realm and open the pause menu. Select Settings > Game, scroll to World Options, and turn on Show Coordinates. You can change this setting directly inside the Realm without downloading and uploading the world.

As an owner or authorized operator, you can also enable coordinates through chat in a local world, multiplayer world, or Realm. Open chat, enter the following command, and submit it:

/gamerule showcoordinates true

For a dedicated server, enter the following command in its console. Leave out the opening slash when using the console:

gamerule showcoordinates true

Replace true with false to hide the display again. This rule belongs to Bedrock Edition and does not enable coordinates in Java Edition. If you cannot change the setting or run the command, ask the world owner or an authorized operator to enable it.

To show supported event locations in Realms Stories, select Play > Realms, then open your Realm's Realms Hub > Settings. As an owner or admin, enable Realm Event Coordinates under HUB, then view the event in the Community story feed. Your world's Show Coordinates setting must have been enabled when the event occurred. This setting shows recorded event locations rather than your live position.

Fix Java shortcuts on your keyboard

On a Mac whose top row controls system features, hold Fn or Globe and press F3. This sends the function key to Minecraft instead of opening Mission Control.

To make a supported Mac keyboard use function keys by default, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys. Enable Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.

Return to Minecraft Java and press F3. A third-party keyboard may require its manufacturer's controls.

On a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar, hold Fn to display the function keys, then tap F3. To show function keys automatically for an app, open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Function Keys, select the + button, and add the relevant app. The automatic behavior depends on which app has keyboard focus.

On a Surface keyboard or Type Cover, enable Fn, then press F3. On a Microsoft keyboard with F Lock, press F Lock until standard function key mode is enabled, then press F3. On the Microsoft All-in-One Media Keyboard, press Fn + Caps Lock to change Fn Lock. Other manufacturers use different function key controls.

If your keyboard lacks an accessible shortcut, open Options... > Controls... > Key Binds... in Java Edition. Find Debug, reassign Toggle Overlay or Debug Options, then use your assigned key. These bindings are configurable in Java Edition 1.21.11 and later. The old F3 + Q shortcut help was removed in that version, so inspect Debug for the available bindings.

Restore missing coordinates in Java

If the overlay opens but your position is missing, your world or server may restrict debug information. In an editable world, pause and select World Options > General > Edit Game Rules.... Set Reduce debug info to false, then select Done.

This world settings path applies to Java Edition 26.3 and requires appropriate permissions; editing is restricted in Hardcore worlds. In your own world, World Options also contains Allow Commands if you need command access. On a server or Realm, ask an authorized operator to change the rule.

With command permission, open chat and submit the command below. Afterward, open the debug overlay or enable the persistent position display:

/gamerule minecraft:reduced_debug_info false

For a dedicated-server console, enter the command below without an opening slash. Use this current spelling, since Java Edition 1.21.11 renamed the game rule:

gamerule minecraft:reduced_debug_info false

Copy coordinates to save or share them

In Java Edition, briefly press F3 + C, then paste into a text editor to read the copied location. Release the keys promptly, because holding that combination for approximately ten seconds triggers a deliberate debug crash. Copying can also be restricted when debug information is reduced.

The copied text is a teleport command containing your position. To use a saved location for travel, follow the steps to teleport in Minecraft with commands.

In Bedrock Edition, open Settings > Creator and turn on Enable Copy Coordinate UI. Return to the world and press Ctrl + Alt + C to copy your position. To copy a block's location, point at the block and press Ctrl + Alt + X. Paste the result to read or share it.

With touch, a controller, or a mouse, enable the same setting and open chat. In the coordinate dropdown, choose My Position for your location, or choose Block Position for the targeted block. Read the coordinate field or select the copy icon. Use the paste icon where needed; Microsoft also documents the controller Y button for pasting.

Show coordinates in Minecraft Education

Open Settings and turn on Show Coordinates, then return to your world. Minecraft Education does not have Java's F3 debug screen.

Show coordinates in Bedrock Editor

When hosting a single-player project in Bedrock Editor on Windows, open World Options > Test World. Enable Show Coordinates, then select Test World to begin the playable test.

To enable coordinates in an exported world, select File > Export. Choose Playable World as the export type, then open Advanced Settings. Check Show coordinates and select Export.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does enabling coordinates in Bedrock require cheats?

You do not need to enable cheats to use the Bedrock showcoordinates game rule. You still need sufficient command permission to change it.

Can you change Java's copy location shortcut?

You can reassign Copy Location under Options... > Controls... > Key Binds... > Debug. You can also assign the Debug Modifier Key separately.

Can you change Bedrock's copy coordinate shortcuts?

You can change the coordinate copy bindings under Settings > Keyboard & Mouse. This lets you assign different shortcuts for copying your position and the targeted block's position.

Do coordinate settings carry over between worlds?

In Java Edition, your Debug Options choices, including player_position, are saved between game launches. In Bedrock Edition, Show Coordinates is a world setting, so turn it on in each world's settings or with the showcoordinates game rule.
