To set up Discord slow mode, open the channel’s settings, select Overview > Slowmode, choose a cooldown, and select Save. You need permission to edit the channel. The cooldown sets a separate waiting period for each member in that channel.
The short version
- Desktop and browser: Select the channel’s cogwheel, open Overview > Slowmode, choose a cooldown, and select Save.
- Mobile: Long-press the channel, tap Edit Channel, adjust Slowmode Cooldown, and tap Save.
- Exemptions: Give a role Bypass Slowmode to let its members skip the native cooldown.
- Threads: Edit an existing thread’s Slowmode separately from its parent channel.

Set or remove the cooldown on desktop or browser
On Discord for Windows, macOS, Linux, or in a browser, select the cogwheel beside the channel. Open Overview, find Slowmode, and choose the cooldown you want. Select Save to apply it.
Alternatively, right-click the channel and choose Edit Channel > Overview > Slowmode. Adjust the cooldown and select Save. To disable it, return to the same control, choose Off, and select Save.
Some desktop builds also show an advanced Slowmode input in channel settings. Discord confirms this control but does not document its complete navigation path, exact label, or accepted input format. If you cannot identify it, use the cooldown control described above.
Set or remove the cooldown on your phone or tablet
In Discord for iOS, iPadOS, or Android, long-press the channel and tap Edit Channel. Find Slowmode Cooldown, drag the control to the interval you want, and tap Save. To disable the cooldown, choose Off in the desktop or browser Slowmode control described above and select Save.
You need permission to edit the channel on mobile too. If you are an ordinary member, ask a moderator to change the interval or grant an exemption. Changing a parent channel’s message cooldown does not directly update the cooldown inside an existing thread.
Manage threads and forum posts separately
Open the thread, select its ellipsis menu, and choose Edit Thread > Slowmode. Select an interval from 5 seconds to 6 hours, or choose Off. You need Manage Threads, and a private thread must also be accessible to you.
On desktop or in a browser, you can also right-click a thread, choose Edit Thread, and adjust its Slowmode control. The parent channel’s cooldown also regulates thread creation. If messages inside an existing thread still have a waiting period, adjust that thread’s own cooldown.
For forum channels and available media channels, open the channel’s settings to manage post Slowmode separately from the default message cooldown inside newly created posts. Discord confirms both controls but does not document their complete current menu paths or exact subcontrol labels. The default concerns new posts; edit existing threads individually when you need to change their cooldowns.
Give selected members a Slowmode exemption
As a server owner or administrator on desktop or browser, open the server dropdown and select Server Settings > Roles. Select the role’s Edit button, then open Permissions > Text Channel Permissions. Enable Bypass Slowmode and select Save. To remove that role’s exemption, disable the same permission and select Save.
On mobile, tap the server name and open Settings > Roles. Choose the role, open Permissions, enable Bypass Slowmode, and tap Save. Turn the same permission off and save to remove that role’s exemption.
To assign the configured role, open the member’s server profile, select the plus sign in the roles section, and select the role. You can also assign members through the role’s Manage Members tab. You must have authority to assign that role, and role hierarchy restrictions apply.
For channel-specific permission policies, select the channel’s cogwheel, open Permissions, and add or select the role or member whose permissions you need to override. For category permissions, right-click the category and select Edit Category > Permissions. You need permission-management authority, and category permission changes propagate to synced channels. That synchronization applies to permissions, not the numerical Slowmode duration.
Check why a member can still post freely
Check the member’s effective permissions, especially Bypass Slowmode. Server owners and accounts with Administrator have all permissions, including the bypass permission. An administrator also bypasses channel permission overrides, so a channel override will not remove that exemption.
To check enforcement, use an ordinary account without a Slowmode exemption. Bots are exempt from the native cooldown too. Automatic exemptions through Manage Messages, Manage Channel, or Manage Threads ended on February 23, 2026; use Bypass Slowmode when you want moderators to skip the cooldown.
Manage Slowmode with Dyno
If your server already has Dyno configured with its Slowmode module enabled and you have command access, you can use its native Slowmode command to change Discord’s cooldown. Dyno’s command index and Slowmode module pages list Slowmode as a Standard Premium feature, so check your server’s Dyno plan before relying on it. For a 3-second interval, run the following command, substituting the channel you want to manage.
/slowmode discord channel:#general time:3sTo disable that native cooldown, use the command below. Dyno’s permissions and your command access still apply.
/slowmode discord channel:#general time:0sDyno Standard Premium also offers its own per-user and shared-channel modes. These modes delete violating messages after submission. To enable the per-user mode with a 3-second interval, run:
/slowmode user channel:#general time:3sShared-channel mode resets the timer for everyone whenever somebody posts. To enable it, use the following command. Omit the time argument from the corresponding user or channel command to disable that mode.
/slowmode channel channel:#general time:3sWith server-management access, you can configure these Premium modes in the Dyno dashboard. Select your server, open Modules, enable Slowmode, and select Settings > Channel. Choose the channel, enter the interval in Select rate limit (seconds), choose Channel Slowmode or User Slowmode, and select Add.
If a moderator cannot use a command, open Commands and the command’s Settings in the dashboard. Configure Allowed/Ignored Roles and Channels; when Sync Required! appears, select Sync to synchronize slash-command visibility. The owner should perform synchronization where role hierarchy requires it.
Use Carl-bot for a message rate limit
With Carl-bot configured, you can allow a number of messages within a time window. You need Manage Server to configure this AutoMod enforcement. To allow five messages per 25 seconds in the current channel, run:
/automod slowmode set 5 25Carl-bot supports separately configurable punishments for this rule. Once the rule is active, Carl-bot already deletes the message that triggered it, even if the punishment does not include delete. To set deletion as the punishment explicitly, use:
/automod slowmode punishment deleteTo stop Carl-bot’s message-rate enforcement, run the command below. If you also enabled Discord’s native Slowmode, manage that cooldown separately in channel settings.
/automod slowmode disableTo exempt a role from Carl-bot AutoMod, use the following command with the role you want to exempt. Whitelist changes also affect other applicable AutoMod rules, so consider that broader effect before adding the role.
/automod whitelist roles add modsYou can exempt a channel with the following command. These exemptions affect Carl-bot AutoMod; native Discord exemptions still use Bypass Slowmode.
/automod whitelist channels add #adminsSet exact cooldowns through an integration
If you manage an authorized bot or administrative integration, send PATCH /channels/{channel.id} with the following body for a 30-second native cooldown. The rate_limit_per_user field accepts integer seconds from 0 through 21600, with 0 disabling the cooldown. Channel edits require MANAGE_CHANNELS, while thread edits require MANAGE_THREADS.
{"rate_limit_per_user":30}To give future threads or posts a default cooldown, send PATCH /channels/{parent_channel.id} with the following body. This requires MANAGE_CHANNELS and supports Text, Forum, and Media parent channels. It initializes newly created threads or posts with a 30-second cooldown; it does not update existing threads or keep their cooldowns synchronized.
{"default_thread_rate_limit_per_user":30}You can also set the cooldown when your integration creates a thread or forum/media post. Include rate_limit_per_user in the appropriate request, either POST /channels/{channel.id}/messages/{message.id}/threads or POST /channels/{channel.id}/threads. Use an integer cooldown in seconds, or 0 to disable it, and ensure the integration has the creation permissions required by that endpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Slowmode in a voice channel limit speaking?
Slowmode in voice and stage channels concerns text messages, not spoken audio. The Discord API supports configuring those text-message cooldowns.
Do forum channels require a Community server?
No, Discord makes forum channels available across server types. Media-channel availability still depends on the server.
What should replace an old Dyno prefix command?
Use Dyno’s documented slash or mention commands. Dyno announced removal of prefix commands after October 13, 2026. The mention form for a native 3-second cooldown in the example channel is @Dyno slowmode discord #general 3s.
Can you use mentions for Dyno’s own Slowmode modes?
Yes, use @Dyno slowmode user #general 3s for its per-user mode or @Dyno slowmode channel #general 3s for its shared-channel mode. Both modes require Dyno Standard Premium.
Can you configure Carl-bot’s message limit with a mention?
Yes, the documented mention equivalent is @Carl-bot slowmode 5 25. With Carl-bot configured and Manage Server permission, this allows five messages per 25 seconds in the current channel.
Do you need to install anything for Discord’s built-in Slowmode?
No additional installation or update is required for the built-in workflows. You can configure the channel cooldown through Discord’s own settings.
