Use the Keyboard Shortcut First

Hold Ctrl and Shift, then press the key with the circular arrow in the top row. The shortcut calls this key Rotate, but its usual keyboard action is Refresh, so you do not need a key with the word Rotate printed on it.

Each press turns the display 90 degrees. Release the keys, look at the screen, and repeat the combination until the text is upright or facing the way you want.

Change Orientation in Settings

Select the time at the bottom right, then open Settings. Under Device, select Displays and choose Built-in Display.

Under Orientation, choose the option that puts your screen in the position you want. Use this route when you would rather pick an orientation from a menu than cycle through turns with the keyboard.

Rotate an External Monitor

Connect the monitor to your Chromebook, then open Settings > Device > Displays. To rotate only the external monitor, first turn off Mirror Built-in Display. Then select the monitor by name and change its Orientation.

Check the selected display before changing anything, especially if your Chromebook screen already looks right. If the monitor is not connected successfully, follow the connection steps in Google's monitor setup help before looking for its rotation setting.

Use Tablet Mode Auto Rotation

On a Chromebook that supports switching between laptop and tablet modes, flip the screen over the hinge to enter tablet mode. The on-screen keyboard opens automatically in this mode, so you can work without reaching the physical keyboard.

With automatic rotation enabled, turn the device to the view you want and let the screen follow it. The Auto-rotate control in the menu opened by the clock switches automatic rotation on or off.

Lock Rotation in Tablet Mode

Enter tablet mode and hold the Chromebook in the orientation you want to keep. Tap the clock at the lower right, then tap Auto-rotate to turn automatic rotation off.

Turn the device to check that the view stays in place. When you want the screen to follow your movements again, open the same menu and enable Auto-rotate again.

Find Missing Rotation Controls

If you are looking for tablet controls, check that your Chromebook supports tablet mode and is actually in that mode. Disconnect a connected mouse and try again, because connecting a mouse switches a Chromebook back to laptop mode.

If an external screen is missing, check its connection before trying to change its orientation. For a USB-C connection showing Cable may not support displays, replace the cable with one rated SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or higher.

Fix a Rotation Shortcut That Does Nothing

If Treat top-row keys as function keys is on for the built-in keyboard, turn it off and retry Ctrl + Shift + Refresh. The Chromebook steps to turn off Fn Lock cover changing that behavior.

For the shortcut shown on your device, open Settings > Device > Keyboard and inputs > View keyboard shortcuts. If your menu uses Device > Keyboard, open that entry for keyboard settings. If older advice says to press F3, check your own layout first and use the rotation shortcut listed for your keyboard.

If Diagnostics offers the keyboard test, use it to check an unresponsive key. To test your Chromebook keyboard keys, open Settings, search for diagnostics, and select Diagnostics > Input > The internal keyboard, then Test.

Follow the on-screen instructions and stay in the test window while pressing the keys. If the keyboard still has problems, turn the Chromebook off and back on, then contact its manufacturer if you need further help.

Handle Work and School Chromebooks

Select the time and look for the managed device icon to check whether an organization manages your Chromebook. If it does, ask your administrator for help when rotation keeps changing back.

An administrator can set a rotation policy that reapplies on every reboot and the first connection after the policy value changes. You can change orientation in settings after signing in, but that policy can put it back at the next restart.

Tell your administrator which screen changes and when it happens. Ask them to check the default display rotation policy, which applies to both primary and secondary displays.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to rotate a Chromebook screen?

Press Ctrl + Shift + Rotate. Each press turns the screen 90 degrees, so repeat until it faces the way you want.

Can I rotate only my external monitor on a Chromebook?

Yes, first turn off Mirror Built-in Display under Settings > Device > Displays. Then select the monitor by name and change its Orientation. Choose Built-in Display instead if you want to adjust the Chromebook's own screen.

Why does my Chromebook screen rotate when I turn the device?

Tablet mode can rotate the screen automatically when that setting is enabled. Turn off Auto-rotate from the clock menu if you want to stop that behavior.

Can a Chrome extension rotate my Chromebook display?

An ordinary extension is not the route for changing the whole ChromeOS display's orientation. Use the keyboard shortcut, display settings, or tablet controls instead.

Which key is Rotate on a Chromebook?

It is the circular arrow key normally used to refresh a page. Look in the keyboard's top row and use it with Ctrl and Shift.

Why does rotation change back after I restart?

On a managed Chromebook, an administrator's display rotation policy can reapply at restart. If your device is managed, ask your administrator to check that policy.
