To factory reset an Acer laptop running Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery, select Reset PC, then choose Remove everything to erase personal files, apps and settings. Choose Keep my files instead if you need to preserve personal files, and back them up before starting either option.

The short version

  • Use Reset PC in Windows Settings when you can open the desktop.
  • Keep my files preserves personal files but removes apps and settings.
  • Use Remove everything and enable Clean data before handing the laptop to someone else.
  • Use Windows recovery or Acer's Alt + F10 shortcut when Windows will not start.
  • A battery reset addresses power problems without erasing files.
  • An Acer Chromebook uses Powerwash rather than Windows reset.

The Windows times are typical recovery estimates, rather than a fixed completion time. The battery estimates cover the button presses and reconnecting power; Chromebook recovery has no fixed duration here.

Choose what to keep before resetting

Back up important files somewhere the reset will not erase, even when choosing Keep my files. That option reinstalls Windows and preserves personal files, but removes apps and settings. Choose Remove everything for a full wipe, including when preparing the laptop for another owner.

Connect the charger before reinstalling Windows. If the laptop is encrypted, have its BitLocker recovery key ready because recovery may require it. Use Microsoft's instructions for finding your BitLocker recovery key before starting if you do not know where it is stored.

Reset Windows from Settings

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery and select Reset PC. Choose Keep my files or Remove everything based on your backup and what you want erased. Both choices reinstall Windows, so preserving files does not preserve your installed apps.

On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. Under Reset this PC, select Get started, then make the same file choice. Use this older path if the laptop still runs Windows 10.

Select Cloud download or Local reinstall, then follow the remaining prompts and review the reset choices. Select Reset when you are ready to proceed. Let the process finish without manually restarting the laptop, even if the screen goes black.

Understand the extra reset options

Cloud download retrieves a fresh copy of Windows and needs a stable internet connection. Local reinstall uses files already on the laptop, which can be preferable with a slow connection.

If you chose Remove everything for a laptop you are giving away, enable Clean data when offered. It cleans the drive and makes deleted files harder to recover. This consumer cleaning option does not meet government or industry data erasure standards.

Under Keep my files, Restore preinstalled apps, when offered and enabled, reapplies manufacturer customizations. If you need original Acer software, ask Acer about recovery media for your laptop. Acer factory recovery media provides a way to reinstall the original software.

Start a reset when you cannot sign in

At the Windows sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. In the recovery environment, choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Select your file option and reinstall method, then follow the prompts to start the reset.

For Acer's startup route on Windows 10 or Windows 11, turn the laptop off and then turn it on. Press Alt + F10 together when the Acer logo appears. At Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC, choose what to keep and how to reinstall, then select Reset.

Recover when the startup shortcut fails

If Alt + F10 does not open recovery, use Windows' automatic repair route. Turn on the laptop and wait for the Windows or Acer logo. Hold the power button until it switches off, then turn it on and repeat that interruption once.

Start the laptop a third time and select Advanced options when the automatic repair screen appears. Then choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC and continue with the reset choices. Use those startup interruptions only to reach recovery, and never interrupt a reset already in progress.

Restore Windows using recovery media

If built-in recovery will not open, use a Windows USB recovery drive previously created for this laptop. A recovery drive can restore Windows after a drive replacement or complete erasure, but restoration removes personal files, apps and settings. Back up any files you can still access before proceeding.

Start the laptop from its recovery USB, using your model's manual for the boot procedure. In Windows recovery, select Recover from a drive, then Just remove my files or Fully clean the drive. Select Recover to confirm and let restoration finish.

For original Acer software, ask Acer support about recovery media for your exact laptop and follow the instructions supplied with it. If you have no recovery drive, Windows installation media created on another working PC provides a separate reinstall route. Back up your files before a full reinstall from USB, which removes your files, apps and settings.

Reset the battery with the power button

Use a battery reset for charging problems, unexpected shutdowns or incorrect battery readings. It resets power management without deleting files or changing the operating system. It serves a different purpose from reinstalling Windows, so choose it for power symptoms rather than a fresh software setup.

Shut down completely, holding the power button for 10 seconds if needed. Unplug the charger and disconnect peripherals, then hold the power button for at least 30 seconds. Reconnect the charger and turn the laptop on.

Use the battery reset pinhole on supported models

Check your model's user guide for a documented battery reset pinhole before using this alternative. Some Acer laptops have one on the underside, labeled Battery Reset. The button temporarily disconnects the internal battery and resets the power circuit without erasing files.

Turn off the laptop and unplug its charger. Gently insert a paperclip into the documented hole until you press the button, and hold it for 15 seconds. Remove the paperclip and turn the laptop on.

Powerwash an Acer Chromebook

Powerwash removes local files, accounts, apps and settings, including files in Downloads. Back up anything you need to Google Drive or external storage before proceeding. Files already stored on Google Drive or external storage are unaffected, and a managed work or school Chromebook requires your administrator's help.

Open Settings > System preferences, scroll to Powerwash and select Reset. Follow the confirmation prompts. If your Settings app has the older layout, open Settings > Advanced > Reset settings instead. Beside Powerwash, select Reset, then Restart and confirm Powerwash.

You can also press the Search or Launcher key and type Powerwash. Select Reset or Powerwash to start the reset prompts from that search result.

For the sign-in shortcut, sign out and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R. Select Restart, then Powerwash > Continue. Follow setup and sign in with your Google Account, remembering that the first account used after the reset becomes the owner.

Recover ChromeOS if Powerwash does not help

ChromeOS recovery reinstalls the operating system and erases local data. Back up files first if you can still access them. Enter recovery mode using the device instructions on Google's Chromebook recovery page, then select Recover using internet connection if offered.

For USB recovery, use another Chromebook or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed. Prepare a USB drive of at least 8 GB that you can erase. In Chrome, install and open Chromebook Recovery Utility through Extensions, then select Get started.

Enter the affected Chromebook's model number from its recovery screen, or choose Select a model from a list. Select Continue, insert the USB drive and choose it from the menu. Select Continue, then Create now, and remove the drive when the utility says it is ready.

On the affected Chromebook, select Recover using external disk. Use the prepared drive and follow the recovery prompts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reinstall Windows without losing my apps?

Yes, on eligible Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Reinstall now under Fix problems using Windows Update. Choose your restart preference and select OK. This repair keeps apps, files and settings; it requires the Windows 11 2022 annual update or later plus the February 2024 optional update or later, and may be unavailable on managed PCs.

Do I need Acer Care Center to reset my laptop?

No, Windows Settings provides the reset route without Care Center. On supported Windows 11 models that have it, open Start > All apps > Care Center > Recovery Management, select Restore > Get started, then Reset PC. If Care Center is absent, use the Windows Settings steps above.

Does pressing F9 in the Acer BIOS factory reset Windows?

No, F9 followed by Enter loads the BIOS or UEFI default configuration. That changes firmware settings rather than reinstalling Windows or erasing personal files. If you have not opened the firmware screen before, the steps to get to BIOS on a Windows PC show how. Use Reset PC or recovery media when you want to reset Windows.

Can I reset my Acer laptop without signing in?

Yes, use Shift with Power > Restart at the sign-in screen, or press Alt + F10 at the Acer logo. Both routes open recovery so you can start a reset. An encrypted laptop may still require its BitLocker recovery key.

Where can I get Acer drivers after resetting?

Open Acer's Drivers and Manuals page and identify your laptop by serial number, SNID or model. Select the operating system to find the matching downloads. For the download and installation steps, follow updating Acer software and drivers.
