To remove the hard drive from an HP laptop, shut it down, disconnect external power, open the access cover and isolate the battery in the order your model's service instructions give, then release the drive as they show. Back up accessible files before starting. Identify the product number first because screw locations, battery procedures, and drive connections differ between models.

Your HP laptop may contain an M.2 SSD instead of a mechanical hard disk. HP lists some storage removal procedures under customer self-repair and assigns others to authorized service providers.

The short version

  • Identify the laptop: Use its exact product number to find the matching HP Maintenance and Service Guide.
  • Disconnect power: Back up accessible files, shut down fully, unplug external power and peripherals, and follow the battery isolation instructions.
  • Match the hardware: Bottom covers, SSD shields, quick-access doors, and retaining screws differ between models.
  • Know when to stop: Arrange service when HP reserves the procedure for an authorized provider.

Find your exact HP laptop model

Read the product or model number on the underside of your laptop or its original box. Record the full number so you can match the chassis rather than relying on a broad name such as HP Notebook or OmniBook.

With Windows running, open HP System Information and record the product name and product number. On supported hardware with the corresponding HP software, you can also press Fn + Esc on the built-in keyboard. If HP Support Assistant is already installed, open it and find these details under My Dashboard.

Find the matching service instructions

Find your exact product on HP Support, open Setup & User Guides, then select Maintenance and Service Guide. Match the product number before following any illustration. For the OmniBook 3 14-hu0000 family, open HP's official manuals page to get the manual.

Read the preparation, bottom cover or service door, battery, and hard drive or solid-state drive instructions before removing a screw. Check whether HP places storage removal under Customer Self-Repair parts or Authorized service provider parts. Arrange service when HP assigns the procedure to an authorized provider.

Older chassis with a latched service door, a dedicated side bay, or keyboard removal have their own routes, covered in the older-laptop section below. Choose your procedure by product number, since a similar-looking laptop can have a different access sequence.

Prepare the laptop before opening it

Back up accessible files, then shut down the laptop completely. Disconnect AC power and external devices before opening the case. Follow your model's service instructions for battery isolation and electrostatic-discharge precautions.

Read the entire access sequence to check whether you must disconnect the battery cable or remove the battery. Prepare the screwdriver and opening tool specified for that chassis. Preserve SSD shields and thermal pads when removing the drive.

Keep screw sizes and positions matched to the instructions. Captive screws may need only loosening, while other screws must come out completely. If the cover does not release as illustrated, stop and recheck the specified fasteners and release points.

Remove an SSD listed for customer removal

For the EliteBook 8 G1i 16-inch Notebook AI PC, HP lists SSD removal under customer self-repair. Follow this sequence only if your configuration is covered by its Maintenance and Service Guide. The illustrations appear on printed pages 38 through 41 and 52 through 53.

After shutting down and disconnecting AC power and external devices, loosen the four captive Phillips bottom-cover screws until the cover rises. Stop loosening once it rises. Release the cover edges with a nonmarking, nonconductive tool, then lift off the cover.

Disconnect the battery cable from the system board. Remove the SSD's Phillips M2.0 × 4.0 screw, lift away its shield, and withdraw the SSD from its socket. Preserve the shield and any thermal pads.

If your screw layout or shield differs, check the product number and matching instructions again. An M.2 SSD in another HP model can require a different cover, battery procedure, or retaining-screw sequence.

Arrange service for an OmniBook SSD

HP assigns the following OmniBook SSD removal procedures to authorized service providers. Use your model number to identify the relevant sequence when arranging the work. Each procedure begins with a complete shutdown and disconnection of AC power and peripherals.

For the OmniBook X 14-fe0xxx, the technician removes two Phillips M2.0 × 7.0 screws and two M2.0 × 3.5 screws from the bottom cover. They release the seam between the hinges with a plastic tool, lift off the cover, and disconnect the battery cable. They then remove the SSD cover's two Phillips M2.0 × 3.0 screws, take off that cover, and withdraw the SSD from its socket.

For the OmniBook Ultra 14-fd0xxx, the technician removes two Torx M2 × 7.0 screws and two Torx M2 × 3.0 screws. Following HP's illustration, they press beside the touchpad near the keyboard to release the bottom cover. They turn the laptop bottom-up and lift the cover's rear edge.

The technician then disconnects the battery cable and peels back the system-board protective tape. They remove the SSD cover's two Phillips M2.0 × 2.5 screws, lift the cover, and withdraw the SSD. If your bottom cover will not release, this keyboard-side opening sequence is a reason to check the model instructions before applying more pressure.

For the OmniBook 3 families 14-hy0xxx, 14-hu0xxx, and 14-ht0xxx, the technician loosens the two upper captive Phillips M2.5 × 6.0 screws and two lower captive M2.0 × 4.0 screws. They release the upper seam with a thin plastic tool and remove the bottom cover. They then remove the battery's five Phillips M2.0 × 4.0 screws and lift out the battery.

Next, the technician removes the metal SSD plate's Phillips M2.0 × 2.5 screws and the plate. They remove the separate M2.0 × 2.5 drive-retaining screw before withdrawing the SSD. Removing the plate alone does not release the drive.

Set up and use an SSD quick access door

Some ZBook X G1i 16-inch configurations have an optional SSD quick-access door. Before opening it, open F10 Setup Utility, then select Security > SSD Cover. Review the configured notification or shutdown behavior with your device administrator; this setting does not mechanically release the SSD.

If you need help reaching firmware settings, follow the steps to get to BIOS on Windows. The door also needs an initial internal setup before subsequent drive removal, so check whether that setup has already been completed.

For first-time setup, shut down and disconnect AC power and peripherals. Loosen the three captive Phillips bottom-cover screws and remove the two M2.5 × 4.0 screws. Release the rear cover edge with a plastic tool and lift the bottom cover.

Slide the internal door lock from its housing, then refit the bottom cover. Press near the door icon and slide the door's left side right. Slide its raised right side left and swing the door upright. Remove the SSD screw, store it in its holder, and close the door.

For subsequent removal, shut down, unplug AC power and peripherals, and turn the laptop over. Open the door using the same sliding sequence, then slide the SSD lock right. Raise the drive's right end slightly and withdraw the SSD.

Use the illustrations on printed pages 53 through 56 of the matching service manual to follow the door movements. If the door does not open as shown, check the initial setup and internal lock instructions before proceeding. Do not assume another ZBook model uses this mechanism.

Remove the correct OMEN SSD assembly

On the OMEN MAX 16-ah0xxx, your removal route depends on the SSD position and graphics configuration. The secondary SSD has an accessible assembly. The primary SSD has a different removal procedure for GeForce RTX 5060 or 5070 configurations than for RTX 5070 Ti, 5080, or 5090 configurations.

For the accessible assemblies, shut down and disconnect AC power and peripherals. Remove the three upper M2.5 × 7.0 bottom-cover screws and two lower M2.5 × 4.0 screws, then loosen the upper captive screw. Release the cover near that captive screw, remove the cover, and disconnect the battery cable.

To remove the secondary SSD, remove its cover screw and withdraw the cover with the SSD attached. For the primary SSD on RTX 5060 or 5070 configurations, remove its retaining screw. Use tweezers as HP illustrates to withdraw the assembly from beneath the heat sink, following printed pages 33 through 37 and 43.

If your laptop has RTX 5070 Ti, 5080, or 5090 graphics, arrange authorized service for primary SSD removal. After shutdown, unplugging, bottom-cover removal, and battery-cable disconnection, the technician removes the heat-sink assembly following printed page 52, then withdraws the primary SSD as shown on pages 56 through 57. Reassembly requires HP's specified replacement thermal materials.

Remove a hard drive from an older HP laptop

Older HP laptops can hold a 2.5-inch hard drive, and HP documents a different route for each chassis. Follow one of these only when your exact model is listed, and use the illustrated pages of that model's manual alongside it.

On a ProBook 450 G0 or ProBook 455 G1, shut down, disconnect AC power and peripherals, then slide the battery-release latches and remove the battery first. Remove the service-door security screw if one is fitted, slide the door-release latches, slide the door toward the front of the laptop, and lift it off. Remove the four Phillips PM2.5 × 3.0 drive screws, pull the drive tab toward the side to disconnect it, and lift out the drive.

On an HP Compaq nc6000, save your work, shut down completely, disconnect external power, and remove the battery before servicing. Close the display, turn the notebook bottom-up, and remove the hard-drive security screw and retaining screw. Lift the hard-drive door and withdraw the drive from its side bay.

For the older HP 14 families 14-ck0xxx, 14-ck1xxx, 14g-cr0xxx, 14g-cr1xxx, 14q-cs0xxx, 14q-cs1xxx, 14t-ck000 and 14t-ck100, HP assigns hard-drive removal to authorized service providers. The technician removes the bottom cover, lifts out the battery, then releases the drive cable from its system-board connector. The older HP 15 Notebook PC models in HP's guide 793965-002 place the drive under the keyboard and top cover, so arrange authorized service for those too.

Arrange physical drive removal through HP

Use HP or an authorized repair provider when your model reserves storage removal for service personnel or you cannot follow its access procedure safely. On your laptop's HP product-support page, find Support options, then select Product repair or select Contact us. Give the product number and request physical storage removal.

You can open HP's product support options for repair and contact access, then navigate to your own model's support page. Make sure the request identifies your exact laptop. Availability and charges depend on your location and service coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every HP laptop have its storage removed separately?

No. HP lists the Chromebook x360 14b-cd0xxx's eMMC/UFS storage within its system-board assemblies. Ordinary hard-drive or M.2 SSD extraction does not apply to that design.

Can Device Manager or an app physically remove the hard drive?

No software setting or Device Manager uninstall physically extracts an internal drive. Uninstalling a device does not detach its hardware connection.

Does the Windows edition change how the drive comes out?

No, physical removal depends on the exact chassis and installed storage rather than the Windows edition. You do not need to download or install software to perform the hardware removal.

Will a repair provider return the removed drive?

Confirm that directly before booking the work. Ask whether the provider offers removal-only service and will return your removed drive, since HP's public support options do not specify those terms.
