Duplicate photos clutter your iPhone library and make finding the picture you want harder than it needs to be. Photos has a built-in tool that combines detected duplicates while keeping the best quality and relevant metadata. Start there, then tackle similar shots, a missing Duplicates collection, or stubborn copies synced from your computer.

Start with the built-in Duplicates tool

Extra copies of the same picture clutter your library, and the built-in Duplicates tool groups detected copies for merging.

Duplicate detection requires iOS 16 or later. These directions use the iOS 26/27 Photos layout.

Open Photos and go to Collections. Under Utilities, open Duplicates, then tap Merge beside a group you want to combine.

Tap Merge [Number] Items to confirm. Photos keeps one image using the best quality and relevant metadata, then moves the discarded copies to Recently Deleted.

Before merging, remember that iCloud Photos synchronizes deletions across devices using the same library. A copy on another synced device is part of that same library.

Merge several groups or all duplicates

Open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Duplicates and tap Select. Use Select on the individual groups you want to merge, or tap Select All to include every detected group.

Tap Merge, then confirm with Merge [Number] Items. For a manageable first cleanup, start with a few groups before merging everything.

Give Photos time to find missing duplicates

No Duplicates collection? It only appears after your iPhone indexes your library and finds duplicates. Detection runs automatically in the background and can finish quickly or take up to a few days.

Connect your iPhone to power, then lock the phone and leave it connected while automatic detection runs. There is no manual scan button.

To inspect indexing, open Photos > Library and scroll to the bottom to check its status.

After allowing time for detection, check Photos > Collections > Utilities for Duplicates again. If the collection still isn't there, your iPhone hasn't identified any duplicates in your library. If Photos still hasn't grouped the extra pictures, use the manual deletion method below.

Delete similar shots yourself

Manual deletion removes unwanted pictures that Photos hasn't grouped as duplicates. Open Photos and tap Select.

Tap or drag across only the unwanted images, leaving the copies you want to keep unselected. Tap the Trash button, then confirm the deletion in the onscreen prompt.

For a single picture, open the unwanted image in Photos instead. Tap the Trash button, then tap Delete Photo.

Finish clearing Recently Deleted

Discarded copies remain visible in Recently Deleted because merging or deleting them moves them there. Removing pictures from this album is permanent and cannot be undone. Check that you've kept the right images before going further.

Open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Recently Deleted and tap View Album. Authenticate to open the album, then tap Select.

Select the discarded copies you want to remove permanently. Tap More, then tap Delete.

Confirm with Delete from All Devices or Delete Photos I Added, depending on the items involved. To clear the entire album instead, use Delete All.

Remove computer-synced copies at their source

If the Trash button is unavailable for pictures manually synced from a computer, remove them through that computer's photo-sync controls. These directions apply to manual syncing without iCloud Photos.

Connect your iPhone to the computer and unlock your iPhone. Approve Trust if prompted.

On a Mac, select your iPhone in the Finder sidebar. Open Photos in the device's sync controls, then choose Selected albums.

Check the contents of the albums you plan to remove, since removing a synced album also removes wanted pictures it contains from the iPhone. Clear the unwanted albums, then click Apply to update the iPhone.

On Windows, select your connected iPhone in Apple Devices and open Photos. Clear the unwanted albums or folders, then click Apply to synchronize the change.

For individual unwanted pictures on Windows, delete those items from the computer's sync source instead. Click Apply in Apple Devices to synchronize again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete duplicate photos through iCloud.com?

Yes. Sign in at iCloud.com/photos with the Apple Account used on your iPhone. Select the unwanted copies, click the Delete button, then confirm with Delete. Deletions synchronize to devices using that iCloud Photos library. This is manual selection, with no automatic duplicate merging in this workflow.

Can I permanently delete someone else's Shared Photo Library pictures?

Shared Photo Library participants can delete items, but only the person who contributed an item can permanently delete or recover it during the recovery period.

Can I remove duplicates from a Shared Album?

Yes. Open the shared album, then open the unwanted image. In iOS 27, tap Delete, then Delete From All Devices. In iOS 26 or earlier, tap Trash, then Delete Photo. The owner can delete any contribution; subscribers can delete their own. Copies saved separately to personal libraries remain.

Does Optimize Storage remove duplicate photos?

No. Optimize Storage reduces the storage your iCloud Photos library needs on the iPhone while retaining its images. It does not identify or merge duplicates.
