To record your screen on a Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime, install the standard Mobizen Screen Recorder app, open its floating AirCircle, and tap Record. The stock J2 Prime has no Samsung built-in screen recorder. Its Android 6.0.1 software meets Mobizen's published Android 5.0 minimum, but you still need to check whether Google Play offers installation on your handset.

Start with Mobizen to record directly on your phone with microphone sound or no sound. If you cannot install it, use scrcpy or Android's screenrecord command through ADB on a computer to capture silent video.

The short version

  • On your phone: Install standard Mobizen, open its floating AirCircle, and tap Record.
  • Sound: Use microphone sound or silent video because Mobizen's internal audio feature requires Android 10 or later.
  • With a computer: Use scrcpy or ADB after enabling USB debugging and authorizing the connection.
  • Built-in controls: Samsung's newer Screen recorder controls do not apply to the stock J2 Prime.

Install the standard Mobizen app

On your phone, open the official Mobizen Screen Recorder listing in Google Play. Tap Install if it is offered for your device, then open the app and grant the requested recording permissions. If installation is unavailable, use the scrcpy or ADB method below.

Choose standard Mobizen Screen Recorder for this phone. Mobizen's older Recorder for Samsung edition targets Android 4.4 or earlier, so the Samsung name does not make that edition the right choice for your J2 Prime.

Choose your sound and video settings

Open Mobizen's settings through the floating AirCircle. Use Record Sound to enable or disable sound, choosing microphone sound when you want spoken commentary. Mobizen requires Android 10 or later for internal sound capture, so that feature does not work on a stock J2 Prime.

Set Countdown to give yourself time before recording starts. Use Facecam if you want a camera overlay, or leave it off to keep the recording focused on your screen.

Use Recording resolution or Recording quality to adjust the recording demands. The available resolutions depend on your device. If recording struggles, lower these settings before trying again.

Record and open your video

Tap the floating AirCircle, then tap Record. Perform the actions you want to capture, then use Mobizen's recording controls to stop. Select View video to open the result.

You can also open the AirCircle menu and select your recording from the video list. Play it before sharing to check the picture and any microphone sound you chose to include.

Record to a computer with scrcpy

Use scrcpy to save your recording directly to a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. It supports Android 5.0 and later, so the J2 Prime meets its Android requirement. Follow the installation instructions for your computer at the official scrcpy repository.

Enable Developer options on your phone, then turn on USB debugging. Connect the phone to your computer by USB and approve the USB-debugging authorization on the phone. Open a terminal on your computer and run this command:

scrcpy --no-audio --record=j2-prime.mp4

Operate your phone while scrcpy records. When you finish, press Ctrl + C in the terminal to stop recording. Your video is saved on the computer as j2-prime.mp4.

The --no-audio option disables audio capture. scrcpy's audio forwarding requires Android 11 or later, so removing that option will not enable sound recording on a stock J2 Prime. Use Mobizen with microphone sound if you need narration.

Capture a short video with ADB

Android's screenrecord command lets you record through ADB without installing a recorder app on your phone. You get silent video with a three-minute maximum, and rotation during capture is not supported. This command-line utility is separate from Samsung's Quick panel recorder.

Download Google's SDK Platform-Tools. Under Downloads, select Download SDK Platform-Tools for Windows, Download SDK Platform-Tools for Mac, or Download SDK Platform-Tools for Linux to match your computer. Accept the terms and extract the package.

Enable Developer options on your phone, then open Settings > Developer options and enable USB debugging. Connect your phone by USB and authorize the computer. In a terminal where ADB is available, start recording with this command:

adb shell screenrecord /sdcard/j2-prime.mp4

Keep your phone in the same orientation while you capture your actions. Press Ctrl + C to stop before the three-minute limit. Copy the recording from your phone to the computer with this command:

adb pull /sdcard/j2-prime.mp4

This method requires your phone's video encoder to support the recording resolution. If capture fails, try Mobizen with a lower Recording resolution or Recording quality. If you want the recording saved directly on your computer, use scrcpy.

Connect over Wi-Fi after USB setup

You can use either computer recording method over Wi-Fi after an initial authorized USB connection. Connect your phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network, keeping the authorized USB connection active. In your computer's terminal, run:

adb tcpip 5555

Disconnect the USB cable after running that command. Replace PHONE_IP_ADDRESS with your phone's IP address and run:

adb connect PHONE_IP_ADDRESS:5555

Once connected, use the scrcpy or ADB recording command above and follow the same stopping and saving steps. Your network must allow the connection; if it does not, return to USB recording. Android 6 does not have the newer Wireless debugging pairing menu.

Check other recorder apps before installing

For AirDroid Personal, AZ Recorder, or XRecorder, first check whether the current Android app can install on your handset. Do not assume that an app's screen-recording features mean its latest version supports Android 6.0.1. If installation is unavailable, use one of the computer methods.

If AirDroid Personal is available for your phone, install and open its Android app, then select Tools > Record Screen. Tap the camera icon in the floating panel to start recording. Tap the same icon again to stop.

For AirDroid recording from a computer, also install its Windows or macOS desktop client. Sign in to the same AirDroid account in the phone app and the desktop client, and complete the phone app's permission prompts. If your phone and computer are on different networks, enable Remote Control under Security & Remote Features in the phone app. Then enable USB debugging, connect your phone by USB, and approve the computer. In the desktop client, open Remote Control > Non-Root > Connect to configure remote control.

After setup, open the desktop client's Remote Control section and connect to your phone. Click the Recording icon to start, then click it again to finish.

For AZ Recorder or XRecorder, check the app's Google Play listing on your phone and select Install only if it is offered. AZ Recorder provides microphone recording, pause and resume controls, and an option to shake your phone to stop. XRecorder provides recording through its floating ball. Both apps require Android 10 or later for internal audio, so you cannot use that feature on stock J2 Prime software.

Fix missing controls and blocked recordings

If you cannot find Samsung's Screen recorder button, use an installed recorder or a computer method. The stock J2 Prime does not include that feature, and Samsung does not document a screen-recording button combination for this model.

If you only need one still image, you can take a screenshot of your screen instead. Use a video recording when you need to show a sequence of actions.

If a particular app blocks screen capture, changing recording settings may not make its protected screens recordable. If your organization manages the phone or a work profile and disables capture, ask its administrator to allow it. Changing that policy permits capture but does not install a screen recorder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you record through AirDroid in a browser?

No, AirDroid says its web client does not support the screen-recording function. You need its compatible Android app or its Windows or macOS desktop client to record.

Why does AirDroid remote control need setup again after restarting?

You need to repeat AirDroid's non-root setup after restarting your phone or disabling USB debugging. Its alternative AirDroid Control Add-on (Accessibility) requires Android 7 or later, so you cannot use that option on a stock J2 Prime.

Can you use Google Play Games or Samsung Game Tools to record gameplay?

Current Google Play Games Sidekick and Samsung Game Tools documentation does not confirm recording support for the stock J2 Prime. Google Play Games Sidekick has recording features for compatible devices, but you should not assume J2 Prime support. Use Mobizen if it installs on your handset, or record through a computer.

Do you need an old version of SDK Platform-Tools for Android 6?

No, you do not need an old release just because your phone runs Android 6. Google says current SDK Platform-Tools are backward compatible with older Android versions.
