Two gray check marks on WhatsApp mean your message was delivered to the recipient’s phone or a linked device, while two blue check marks mean it was read. Gray checks do not prove that the message is unread, because read receipt settings can hide reading confirmation. In a group chat, two gray checks mean everyone received the message, and two blue checks mean everyone read it.

The short version

  • Two gray checks: Your message reached the recipient’s phone or a linked device.
  • Two blue checks: Your message was read, or everyone read it in a group chat.
  • Missing blue checks: Read receipt settings can hide reading confirmation in individual chats.
  • More detail: Open your sent message’s information to check delivery, reading, or voice playback.

Read the marks beside your sent message

Open the WhatsApp chat and look beside the message you sent. The same basic indicators apply on Android, iPhone, Web, Mac, and Windows. Check both the number of marks and their color.

A clock means your message is pending, and one gray check means it was sent. Two gray checks confirm delivery to the recipient’s phone or a linked device, so their phone does not have to be the device that received it. Two blue checks confirm reading.

If your message stays on one gray check, you do not yet have delivery confirmation. Follow the steps to troubleshoot messages stuck on one check when that is the status you need to resolve. A check mark alone does not identify the cause.

Check delivery and reading details

Open your sent message’s information when you need more detail than the checks provide. Delivered records delivery, while Read or Seen records reading or viewing. For a voice message, Played records playback.

On Android, open the chat, touch and hold your sent message, then tap Info. If needed, tap More options > Info after selecting the message. You can use these steps in individual and group chats.

On iPhone, open the chat and touch and hold your sent message. Tap Info to inspect its details. The same steps apply to messages you sent to an individual or a group.

In WhatsApp Web, open the chat, then open the down-chevron menu on your sent message. Click Message info to view its details. Use these instructions in the browser version.

Interpret checks in group chats

In a group chat, the two-check indicators represent everyone in the group. Two gray checks mean everyone received your message, and two blue checks mean everyone read it. Without two blue checks, you do not have confirmation that everyone has read it.

For more detail, touch and hold your sent group message on Android or iPhone, then tap Info. In WhatsApp Web, open the message’s down-chevron menu and click Message info. Group read receipts remain enabled even when you turn off read receipts for individual chats.

Choose your read receipt setting

On Android, tap More options > Settings > Privacy. Turn Read receipts on or off. You will find Privacy directly under Settings.

On iPhone, tap Settings, then Privacy. If your interface uses your profile picture as the entry point, tap that picture, then Privacy. Turn Read receipts on or off.

In WhatsApp Web, click Settings > Privacy > Read receipts. Enable or disable the setting. Turning receipts off also limits viewer information for WhatsApp Status updates, which is separate from chat-message check marks.

On mobile and Web, turning off your read receipts also stops you from seeing other people’s read receipts in individual chats. Keep the setting enabled if you want to exchange reading confirmations. Group read receipts remain enabled either way.

Check settings when blue checks are missing

If you want to see reading confirmations, first check that your own Read receipts setting is enabled. The recipient’s setting also matters in individual chats. Even with yours enabled, their privacy choice can prevent you from seeing confirmation.

The recipient may also not have opened the conversation. Two gray checks establish delivery, but they cannot settle whether someone has read your words. Missing blue checks alone do not tell you which explanation applies.

Check marks and activity indicators answer different questions. WhatsApp says online means the app is open and connected, but it does not establish that your message was read. Treat online and last seen as activity information rather than reading confirmation.

Read voice message and view once status

For an ordinary voice message, open your sent message’s Info screen. Read or Seen means the recipient viewed it, while Played means they played it. Ordinary voice-message play receipts cannot be disabled through Read receipts.

On WhatsApp for Mac, inspect the microphone on your sent voice message. Gray means not all recipients have played it, while blue means everyone has played it. WhatsApp acknowledges a bug that can prevent the color from updating, so a gray microphone can be misleading.

For view-once photos, videos, and voice messages on Android and iPhone, open the chat and look for Opened on your sent item. The recipient must have read receipts enabled for you to receive this confirmation. This condition differs from the playback rule for ordinary voice messages.

Use unread markers as reminders

Marking a chat unread gives you a reminder without retracting an existing read receipt. In WhatsApp Web, hover over the chat and click its down-chevron menu. Choose Mark as read or Mark as unread; marking an already-read chat unread leaves the sender’s reading confirmation intact.

To manage several chats in WhatsApp Web, click More options > Select chats, then select the conversations. Click More options again and choose Mark as read or Mark as unread. The Mark as read action requires an unopened message.

In the native WhatsApp app for Windows, select the chat and press Ctrl + Shift + U to mark it unread. This changes your reminder state without retracting a read receipt.

In WhatsApp Web on Windows, select the chat and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + U. In WhatsApp Web on Mac, select the chat and press Command + Control + Shift + U. These browser shortcuts also mark the chat unread without reversing a reading confirmation.

Get WhatsApp for your device

If you need WhatsApp on another device, open WhatsApp’s official download page and find the mobile, tablet, or desktop app for your device. To use the browser version, choose Log in. Check the minimum requirements the page lists for your device’s app before you install it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do read receipts reset when you edit a WhatsApp message?

Yes, editing a message resets its read receipts. A reading confirmation from before the edit does not confirm that the edited message has been read.

Can check marks tell you whether someone blocked you?

A check mark alone cannot diagnose blocking. Missing receipts can also reflect connectivity, privacy settings, an unopened conversation, first-contact behavior, or incorrect device dates and times.

Do broadcast messages have the same requirements as group messages?

Broadcast lists have separate requirements: they are mobile-only, and recipients must have saved your number to receive your broadcast messages. Broadcast lists are unsupported on WhatsApp for Windows, Mac, and Web.

Can you still use WhatsApp check mark instructions for KaiOS phones?

No, older KaiOS keypad and menu instructions no longer apply to a supported WhatsApp service on those phones. KaiOS ended support for new or logged-out users on June 25, 2024, and retained existing-user access only until early 2025.
