Outlook logout works differently depending on where you are signed in. The web version has a normal sign-out option, but the Outlook apps use account removal, profile removal, or account controls instead.

Start with the place where Outlook is still open, then use the wider Microsoft account options only when you need to end sessions on other devices.

Sign Out Of Outlook On The Web

For Outlook.com or Hotmail in a browser, open Outlook.com and look in the top corner of your Inbox for your account initials or account picture.

Select your account initials or picture, then choose Sign out. This ends the Outlook.com session in that browser.

If the profile menu is hidden or Sign out is not available, use Microsoft’s manual web sign-out link from its Outlook.com sign-out page, then close all browser windows.

Use Sign Out Everywhere For A Wider Logout

This fixes Outlook and Microsoft account sessions left open on browsers, apps, and trusted devices tied to your personal Microsoft account. Sign in to Advanced security options on your Microsoft account security dashboard.

Scroll down to Sign out everywhere, then select Sign out. Microsoft says this signs out browsers, apps, and trusted devices within 24 hours, except Xbox console.

Remove Your Account From New Outlook For Windows

Use this when the new Outlook app on Windows keeps a mailbox signed in.

  1. 1.Open Outlook and select View, then View settings.
  2. 2.Go to Accounts, then Your accounts.
  3. 3.Under Email accounts, find the account and select Manage.
  4. 4.Under Account details, select Remove.
  5. 5.Return to the accounts page or close Settings.

Remove An Account In Classic Outlook For Windows

Classic Outlook for Windows uses the account settings menu instead of the new Outlook settings panel. Open Outlook, select File, choose Account Settings, then choose Account Settings again.

Select the account you want to remove, choose Remove, then confirm with Yes. This removes the email account from classic Outlook.

If you need cleaner separation on a shared PC, use File, Account Settings, Manage Profiles, Show Profiles, select the profile, then choose Remove.

Remove An Account On Outlook For Mac

This fixes Outlook for Mac accounts that stay connected inside the app. The exact path depends on whether you are on current Outlook for Mac or the legacy client.

On current Outlook for Mac (Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021), open Outlook for Mac. Select Tools, choose Accounts, and select the account you want to remove. Choose Manage, then select Remove Account and choose Continue.

Legacy Outlook for Mac still has a true sign-out instead. Select Tools, then Accounts, pick the account in the left-hand list, select the minus (-) symbol at the bottom of the window, then choose Sign Out.

Microsoft says the legacy Outlook for Mac client stops working against Exchange Online mailboxes in October 2026, so treat that path as a short-term option if your mailbox is on Exchange Online.

Log Out Of Outlook On iPhone And Android

In the Outlook mobile app, the current path is account removal. Open Settings, choose Accounts, select the email account, then tap Remove Account.

For Outlook.com in Safari on iPhone, clear saved website data through Settings, Apps, Safari, Advanced, Website Data, Remove All Website Data, then Remove Now. Apple says removing website data signs you out of websites that use that saved data.

To delete the Outlook app from an iPhone or iPad, touch and hold the Outlook app, choose Remove App, Delete App, then Delete. On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap the Profile icon, go to Manage apps & devices, choose Manage, select Outlook, then choose Uninstall.

Clear Browser Cookies When Outlook Signs Back In

Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more. Go to Settings, then Privacy, search, and services. Open Cookies, then choose See all cookies and site data.

Search for the Outlook or Microsoft site. Select the down arrow to the right of the site, then choose Delete.

On a shared or public computer, use a private browsing window next time, sign out when finished, and close all browser windows.

Disconnect Work Or School Outlook Accounts

This fixes Outlook sessions connected through a Windows work or school account managed at the system level.

Open the Windows Settings app and go to Accounts. Choose Access work or school, select the dropdown next to the work or school account, then choose Disconnect and confirm with Yes.

Understand The Missing Outlook App Sign Out Button

Older instructions point to a direct app-level Sign out button inside Outlook. Microsoft’s Outlook.com sign-out guidance says it is no longer possible to sign out of your Outlook app or be prompted for a password to sign in. The one place Microsoft still documents a direct sign-out is legacy Outlook for Mac, where the steps are Tools, Accounts, the minus (-) symbol, then Sign Out.

The current replacements are account removal, profile removal, operating system account separation, uninstalling the app, or Microsoft account sign-out controls.

If you only need to end a web session, use the Outlook.com profile menu or Microsoft’s manual sign-out link instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing an account from Outlook delete my email?

No. Removing the app or profile is separate from deleting online mailbox data. Removing a classic Outlook profile removes the Outlook profile and offline cached data for its accounts, not the online mailbox data.

Why can’t I just sign out of the Outlook app?

Microsoft’s Outlook.com guidance says it is no longer possible to sign out of the Outlook app or be prompted for a password to sign in. The exception is legacy Outlook for Mac, where Microsoft still documents Tools > Accounts > select the account > minus (-) symbol > Sign Out. Use account removal, profile removal, OS account separation, or Microsoft account sign-out options instead.

How long does Sign out everywhere take?

For a personal Microsoft account, Microsoft says Sign out everywhere signs out browsers, apps, and trusted devices within 24 hours, except Xbox console.

What should I do on a public computer?

Use a private browsing window, sign out when finished, and close all browser windows. For a saved Outlook.com session in the browser, remove the Outlook or Microsoft site cookies.
