Connect Spotify to your Discord account

On Discord desktop or in the browser, click the cogwheel to open User Settings, select Connections, then choose Spotify. Select View More if Spotify is not initially visible. Complete Spotify sign-in in the browser window that opens.

On Discord for iOS or Android, tap your avatar at the bottom right, then tap the cogwheel at the top right. Open Connections, tap Add, select Spotify, and complete sign-in. Linking your accounts does not start shared playback.

Sign in only through Spotify’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you. Once the accounts are connected, enable activity sharing before inviting friends to listen.

Make your Spotify activity visible

In Discord, open User Settings > Connections and turn on Display Spotify as your status. If Connections appears within Connected Apps, open it there. Also enable Display on Profile if you want your Spotify account connection visible on your profile.

Next, open User Settings > Activity Sharing and enable Share my activity. Under My Servers, review sharing for the server where you want friends to see your activity. Alternatively, open the server-name menu, select Privacy Settings, and enable Activity Status.

The Spotify connection’s sharing toggle and global activity sharing both need to be enabled for activity sharing. These controls determine whether friends can discover your listening activity; they do not start audio playback. If friends cannot see your Spotify status while music is playing, check both settings.

Join a friend through Listen Along

Have your friend start playing Spotify, then open your friends list in Discord. Select the person showing Listening to Spotify and click Listen Along. Use text chat during the listening session.

Your Spotify account needs Premium to join this way. If desktop playback becomes blank or unresponsive, try Spotify’s web player using the steps below.

To open the music without joining synchronized playback, visit your friend’s mini-profile or full profile while they are playing Spotify. Select Play on Spotify to open their current music.

Invite friends from a Discord conversation

Start playing music in Spotify, then open a Discord direct message, group direct message, or server text channel. Click + beside the message box to create a Spotify listening invitation. Review the invitation, add a comment if you want, and send it. Your friends click Join on the invitation, and each recipient needs Spotify Premium.

The invitation follows your song changes as playback continues. Stopping Spotify playback ends the displayed session until playback resumes. If friends find that the displayed session has ended, resume playing music before they try joining again.

Share a Spotify Jam through Discord

With a Spotify Jam, you share the invitation through Discord while Spotify handles synchronization. You need Premium to host, and each friend joining remotely needs Premium too. Jam replaced the older Group Session feature, so use the Jam controls if you encounter older Group Session instructions.

On Spotify desktop, right-click a track or playlist and select Start a Jam. Choose Invite, then Share link, and paste the invitation into your Discord conversation.

On Spotify mobile, start playback and tap the Connect device icon. Select Start a Jam, then Invite > Share link. Send the invitation through Discord to the people you want to listen with.

To join, open the host’s invitation link in Discord, choose remote listening in Spotify, then tap Join. You can also scan the host’s Jam QR code to join. Free accounts can participate in person, but remote participation requires Premium.

Fix playback on the wrong device

If Listen Along does not start playing, play a song in the Spotify client you intend to use, then retry Listen Along in Discord. You can also select a playback device in Spotify before retrying.

To choose a Spotify Connect-compatible device, open Spotify and play something. Press the Connect device icon at the bottom of the screen and select your desired playback device. Spotify Connect selects the output device; it does not independently create a shared listening session.

Discord recommends keeping mobile devices awake during the session. If playback is delayed, check that your system clock is synchronized, then retry the listening session.

Try the web player when desktop playback fails

If Spotify’s desktop playback becomes blank or unresponsive when using Listen Along, open the Spotify web player and sign in. Use it for playback, then retry Listen Along in Discord. Spotify recommends this temporary workaround for affected Premium desktop users.

The web player workaround is not a guaranteed fix. If Listen Along still fails, try sharing a Spotify Jam invitation through Discord. The host and everyone joining remotely need Premium.

Reduce microphone activity that pauses Spotify

Accidental microphone transmission can trigger Spotify auto-pause. In Discord desktop or browser, open User Settings > Voice & Video > Input Mode and select Push to Talk. Select Edit Keybind and press your preferred key to assign it.

Alternatively, select Voice Activity, disable Automatically determine input sensitivity, and adjust the sensitivity slider so background audio does not activate your microphone. If you use Push to Talk in a browser, the browser window needs focus. These adjustments reduce accidental transmission; they do not make simultaneous voice chat a supported Listen Along mode, so use text chat during the listening session.
