Fix the Google Drive ZIP failed error by reloading Drive and retrying, then downloading individual files or smaller groups if the folder download still fails. In Chrome, allow third-party cookies for Drive before checking extensions and browser data. If the folder keeps failing, use Drive for desktop to copy the files locally and create the ZIP on your computer.
Choose your next fix based on where the download stops. A failure while Drive builds the ZIP needs a different approach from a browser error while transferring or saving it. An error opening a completed archive is a separate extraction problem.
The short version
- Retry first: Reload Drive and try again, or wait when Google reports a temporary problem.
- Reduce the selection: Download individual files or smaller groups to work around a failing folder download.
- Check Chrome cookies: Add drive.google.com to the sites allowed to use third-party cookies.
- Match the error: Disk space and save-location fixes help browser download errors, not a ZIP that Drive never created.
- Bypass web packaging: Copy downloaded files through Drive for desktop and compress them locally.

Reload Drive and retry the download
Reload Drive, select the folder or files again, right-click the selection, and choose Download. If Drive reports a temporary problem, wait and retry later.
For a persistent failure, open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard and find Google Drive. Open any incident indicator to read the details, then retry after the incident is resolved. If an incident explains the failure, wait for recovery before changing browser settings.
Download individual files or smaller groups
Start with one file from the folder that failed. At drive.google.com, select an ordinary file, right-click it, and choose Download. Repeat for the files you need most to bypass multi-file packaging.
For a larger collection, open the folder and hold Ctrl on Windows or Command on Mac while selecting a smaller group of files. Right-click the selection and choose Download, then repeat with the remaining groups. Smaller selections are a workaround to try, not a guaranteed repair.
For Google-native documents, open the document in Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Vids, then choose File > Download and select the desired format. Available formats depend on the editor. Export these documents separately when collecting your local copies.
Allow third party cookies for Drive
Google identifies blocked third-party cookies as a cause of Drive web download problems in Chrome. Open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies. Under Sites allowed to use third-party cookies, choose Add, enter drive.google.com, and select Add again.
Return to Drive, reload the page, and retry the same download. This exception allows third-party cookies for Drive without changing the setting for every site. If downloading still fails, check extensions next.
In Firefox, open Drive, click the shield at the left of the address bar, and turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for Drive. Retry after the page reloads. If that does not help, continue with the browser checks below.
Turn off conflicting browser extensions
Check ad blockers and download extensions when Drive downloads keep failing. In Chrome, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, turn extensions off, and retry. If the download succeeds, enable extensions individually and repeat the download to identify the conflict.
Once you identify a conflicting Chrome extension, select Remove in Manage extensions, then confirm with Remove. Alternatively, open its toolbar menu and choose This can read and change site data > When you select the extension to limit automatic site access. That setting does not necessarily control extensions that work through network or VPN mechanisms.
In Edge, open Extensions > Manage extensions and turn the relevant extensions off before retrying. On Mac, choose Safari > Settings > Extensions and deselect extensions. Enable them individually afterward to narrow down the cause.
Clear browser data and try another browser
Start by deleting the affected site's data. In Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions. Search for the affected Google site, choose Delete, confirm with Delete, and sign in again.
If that does not help, open More > Delete browsing data and choose All time. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then choose Delete data. Clearing cookies can sign you out, so sign back into Drive before retrying.
In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select the affected website, choose Remove, then Done. Sign in again and retry the download.
To check whether the problem is specific to your browser, open Drive in an up-to-date alternative such as Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Sign in with the account that has access and retry the same selection. To update Chrome first, open More > Help > About Google Chrome, allow the update to install, and choose Relaunch when offered.
Check the connection and download destination
Check your connection and retry on another available network if it is unreliable. If the signal is weak, you can fix a weak Wi-Fi signal before attempting the download again.
For continuing network trouble, turn off your computer and unplug the modem and router. Wait about a minute, reconnect the modem and let it start, then reconnect the router. Turn on the computer and retry the download.
Once a transfer has started, open Chrome's More > Downloads to inspect its status. For a resumable transfer, use the download control, hover over the filename, and choose Resume. You cannot resume a ZIP that Drive never generated.
If the browser cannot save the file, choose a writable folder with enough free space. In Chrome, open More > Settings > Downloads > Change and select another folder, or enable Ask where to save each file before downloading. For a Disk full error, remove unneeded local files and empty the Trash or Recycle Bin.
For Virus scan failed or Virus detected, inspect your antivirus explanation and resolve a legitimate false positive with its vendor. These transfer and save errors need separate attention from a failure while Drive builds the ZIP.
Check shared file access and download restrictions
If you see a permission error, make sure you are signed in to the Google account the file is shared with, switching accounts if needed. When Drive shows You need access, choose Request access.
When the owner has disabled downloads, ask them to permit downloading for your role. The owner selects the file, opens Share > Settings, and changes the download, copy, and print permissions. You cannot override those restrictions from your browser.
If you see Too many users have viewed or downloaded this file recently, wait and retry. Google says this temporary high-traffic restriction typically resets within 24 hours. That waiting period applies to this specific message, not every ZIP failure.
Google also documents downloading a copy for this high-traffic restriction when copying is allowed and your account has sufficient storage. Open Shared with me, right-click the file, and choose Make a copy. Open My Drive, right-click the copy, and choose Download. This option does not override disabled copying or administrator restrictions.
Copy the files locally and create your own ZIP
For a folder that repeatedly fails in the browser, get Drive for desktop and choose Download Drive for desktop. Install it, complete browser sign-in, and open Google Drive in File Explorer or Finder. If a folder shared with you does not appear there, create a shortcut to it in My Drive on the web, then open it through Drive for desktop. Copy the required downloaded files into a separate local folder rather than moving them out of the synchronized drive.
If the files are streamed and still need to download, select them or their folder in File Explorer on Windows, right-click, and choose Offline Access > Available offline. On Mac, right-click the selection and choose Available offline. Wait for downloading to finish before copying the files locally. Google-native document placeholders still require separate export.
After obtaining the files on Windows 11, select them in File Explorer, right-click, and choose Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. On Mac, select the downloaded files or folder in Finder, hold Control while clicking the selection, and choose Compress. You now create the archive locally, bypassing Drive's web ZIP generator.
If downloads continue failing after the applicable checks, open Drive's Help > Send feedback. Describe the error and whether it occurs during ZIP preparation or after the transfer starts, include which downloads fail and which browser you use, then choose Send.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download the files on my phone instead?
You can download individual files in the Google Drive app on Android, iPhone, or iPad. Tap More beside a file, then Download. This gives you individual files rather than replacing the browser's folder ZIP workflow.
Why is Download unavailable in Drive on Android?
Data Saver can make downloading unavailable in the Android Drive app. On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver and turn it off, then return to Drive and retry. Other Android manufacturers use different settings paths.
Does Incognito mode fix Google Drive ZIP failures?
Incognito can help diagnose a browser problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Chrome blocks third-party cookies there by default, and extensions explicitly allowed in Incognito can still run. You may need to allow Drive's third-party cookies before retrying in that window.
Can Google Takeout replace a failed Drive folder download?
You can use Google Takeout to export eligible Drive data from your signed-in account through a separate export process. It is not a universal way to download another person's shared folder, and Workspace administrators may restrict it. If a Takeout export fails, retry with fewer files or a smaller maximum archive size.
Can I use Drive for desktop on Linux?
Google does not offer a Drive for desktop client for Linux. You can use Drive in a current supported browser instead.
Does clearing download history free space for the ZIP?
Clearing download history does not delete downloaded files or free their disk space. To make room, remove unneeded local files themselves.
