Check your connection and Drive service status
Open another website on the affected device, then compare the connection on another device. Connect the affected device to another working network and reopen Drive. These checks help distinguish a Drive problem from a broader connection problem.
Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, locate Google Drive, and open any incident details. If Google reports a disruption, wait for recovery and retry opening your file. Continue with device troubleshooting if the service is working but your connection error remains.
For a home Wi-Fi problem, unplug the router's power, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect it. Allow the router to reconnect, move closer to it, and try Drive again.
On Android, open Settings > Network & internet, or Connections on devices with that menu name. Turn Wi-Fi off and Mobile data on, then test Drive; reverse those choices to test Wi-Fi. You can also turn Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, and turn it off.
Reload Drive and update your browser
In desktop Chrome, reload the Drive tab. If it still fails, close unused tabs and applications, quit Chrome, and reopen it before trying again.
To update Chrome, open More > Help > About Google Chrome, allow the update, and select Relaunch. You can also test Drive in another up-to-date browser. Google recommends using one of the two most recent browser versions.
If the desktop app is failing but your browser works, open Google Drive in a supported browser and sign in to access or transfer files. You can use the web version while repairing the desktop client. If the web version also fails, continue with the browser checks below.
Test Incognito and clear browser data
Open Chrome's More menu and select New Incognito window, then open Drive and sign in. On Windows or Linux, press Ctrl + Shift + N; on Mac, press Command + Shift + N. Use this as an online connection test because Drive offline access does not work in private browsing.
If Drive works in Incognito, check extensions and stored data in your normal window. Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions, turn extensions off, and test Drive again. Re-enable them individually, testing as you go, to identify an extension that interferes.
Deleting browsing data removes the selected cookies and cached files, so preserve any unsynced offline work first. In Chrome, open More > Delete browsing data and choose All time. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, then select Delete data. Reopen Drive and sign in if requested.
Check browser permissions that can block Drive
In desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Javascript. Select Sites can use Javascript, then retry Drive.
If you have blocked site storage, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > On-device site data. Select Allow sites to save data on your device, then reopen Drive.
If Drive files display improperly in Firefox, open Drive and click the shield icon beside the address bar. Turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for that site, then test again. This creates a site-specific exception.
Fix the Drive app on Android
On Pixel and Android devices with the same settings layout, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Drive > Force stop, then tap OK. Open Drive again to check the connection. Other manufacturers can use different menu labels.
Update Drive through the Google Play Store by tapping your profile icon and opening Manage apps & devices. Under Updates available, update Drive. For a system update on Pixel and devices with that layout, open Settings > System > Software update and install an available update. The system update path varies by manufacturer.
If uploads fail specifically on mobile data, open Drive's Menu > Settings. Under Data usage, turn off Transfer files only over Wi-Fi. This setting affects file transfers.
For interrupted background transfers on Pixel and compatible Android 8 or later layouts, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data. Turn on Drive to allow its background mobile data through Data Saver. Alternatively, turn off Data Saver.
Clearing the cache removes Drive's cached app data. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Drive > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Reopen Drive and test the connection before trying a storage reset.
Clearing storage erases Drive's local app data and settings, so preserve unsynced local work first. Return to Storage & cache, tap Clear storage, and tap OK; some devices call the control Clear data. Reopen Drive and configure it again.
Fix the Drive app on iPhone
Open the App Switcher, locate Drive, and swipe its card upward to close it. Reopen Drive from the Home Screen or App Library. If it still fails, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, select App Updates, and update Drive.
When Drive fails on cellular data, open Settings > Cellular. Turn on Cellular Data and enable Drive in the app list, using Show All if necessary. This requires a working cellular plan.
If other apps also cannot connect over Wi-Fi, open Settings > Wi-Fi, turn Wi-Fi on, and select a working network. Make sure Airplane Mode is off, and turn off Connectivity Assist if available. Try another network or router frequency band if the connection still fails. If no Drive app update is available, check for an iOS software update.
Deleting Drive removes its local app data, so preserve unsynced local work before reinstalling it. Touch and hold Drive, select Remove App > Delete App, and tap Delete. Re-download it from the official Google Drive App Store listing and try again.
Reconnect Drive for desktop
On Windows, open the Drive icon in the taskbar; on Mac, open it in the menu bar. Select Settings > Quit, then open Google Drive again. Test the connection before changing account settings.
If the client still fails, download the latest installer from Google's Drive product page by selecting Download Drive for desktop. Run the installer and complete installation. Google recommends reinstalling as a basic desktop troubleshooting step.
For a proxy-related connection problem, open the Drive menu and select Settings > Preferences > Advanced settings. Choose Direct connection to bypass the operating system's proxy configuration, or Auto-detect when your network requires its configured proxy. If your organization manages these settings, ask your administrator to check the configuration.
Disconnecting your account removes offline streamed files and can delete Lost and Found contents, so first copy unsynced Lost and Found files somewhere safe. Open Settings > Preferences > Advanced settings, locate your account, and select Disconnect account. Sign in again and choose the Google Drive folder location. Sign in only through Google’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.
If your managed Google Workspace account cannot use the desktop client, ask your administrator to check whether Drive for desktop is enabled for your organization and whether your device is authorized. Use Drive on the web while access is restored, provided your organization permits it.
Fix persistent browser and network problems
When local security software blocks Drive on the web or desktop, inspect its blocked-site or application rules and allow Google Workspace traffic. The controls depend on the installed security product.
Resetting Chrome changes browser configuration and extensions but keeps saved bookmarks and passwords. For a persistent Chrome-only problem, open More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults, then select Reset settings. Retry Drive after the reset.
If the whole computer has internet problems, on Windows 11 run the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help. Also verify that Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off.
When only one large file fails to load, compare it with Drive's supported file limits and divide its contents into smaller files before retrying. Use this fix for a file-loading failure, rather than an account-wide connection error.
If a desktop connection error persists, open the Drive menu and select Settings > Send feedback. Describe the error, select Include diagnostic logs, and click Submit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use Google Drive on your phone without a connection?
You can access files you prepared for offline use while connected. On Android, tap More beside a file, then Make available offline; on iPhone or iPad, open the file's More menu and turn on Available offline. Find saved files through Menu > Offline. On iPhone or iPad, use the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app for offline editing of its respective format.
Why are desktop transfers stopped even when your internet works?
Drive for desktop syncing may be paused. Open the Drive menu and select Settings > Resume syncing. This resumes paused transfers but does not repair an unavailable network.
Which computers can run Drive for desktop?
You can use Drive for desktop on 64-bit Windows 10 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, Windows 11 or later on ARM64, and macOS Ventura 13 or later. Google does not support a Linux desktop client, 32-bit Windows, or beta operating systems. Use Drive on the web if your computer does not meet the desktop requirements.
Should you follow old Backup and Sync repair instructions?
Use Drive for desktop instead of following repair menus for the retired Backup and Sync client. Google ended Backup and Sync sign-in on October 1, 2021.
