Netflix can work on your phone while failing on the TV because the TV uses a different app session, device software, network connection, and Household check. Start with the TV and home internet before changing your account. These fixes move from quick resets to app repair, Household errors, unsupported devices, and phone-to-TV playback.

Restart the TV device completely

The most common cause is a stuck Netflix app or TV device that stayed in sleep instead of fully shutting down. Turn off the smart TV, streaming stick, cable box, Blu-ray player, game console, or other TV-connected device you use for Netflix.

If the device has a power cable, unplug it from power. Make sure the device is completely off, not in sleep or standby. Leave it off for 15 seconds.

Turn the device back on. Open Netflix and try playing again.

Reset the home network path

This fixes a TV that fails on home internet while the phone works on cellular data or another network. Turn off the TV or streaming device you use for Netflix.

Unplug the modem and router from power. Wait 30 seconds, then plug the modem and router back in. Wait 1 minute for the network to come back online.

Turn on the TV device. Open Netflix and try again.

Check whether the TV is actually online

Use this when Netflix shows a connection error, spins, or fails before playback starts. If other internet apps fail or show a network error, the TV or streaming device is usually not connected.

Open another internet app on the TV or streaming device. If that app fails, open the device network settings. Run the built-in network test if your device offers one. Reconnect the TV or streaming device to Wi-Fi or Ethernet from the manufacturer’s network settings.

If Netflix shows an error screen, select More Details. Select Reload Netflix, then try Netflix again.

Sign out of Netflix on the TV

A bad TV app session can block Netflix on the TV while the same account keeps working on your phone. From the Netflix home screen, press the remote Back button to open the menu. If the menu is at the top, move left to the profile icon, then select Get Help, Sign out, and Yes.

If the menu is on the left side, go to the bottom, then select Get Help, Sign out, and Yes. Sign back in and test Netflix again.

When Get Help is unavailable, press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up on the remote, then select Sign out, Reset, or Deactivate. This shortcut does not apply to Apple TV.

If this method fails, update or reinstall the Netflix app on the TV device next.

Update or reinstall the Netflix app

On Roku, press Home. Highlight Netflix, press Star, then select Check for Updates.

If Netflix still will not open on Roku, press Home. Highlight Netflix, press Star, then select Remove app and confirm. Re-add Netflix from Roku Streaming Store or use the Netflix button if your remote has one.

On Samsung Smart TV, press Home. Select Apps, then Settings. Navigate to Netflix and select Delete. If Delete is grayed out, select Reinstall instead.

On Fire TV, press Home. Select Settings, Applications, Manage All Installed Applications, Netflix, Uninstall, and Confirm. Press the Netflix button on the Fire TV remote and select Download to reinstall.

On Apple TV, highlight Netflix on the Home Screen. Press and hold the clickpad or touch surface until the app jiggles or the context menu appears. Select Delete App, then Delete. Open the App Store.

Search for Netflix, then select Get or Install. Keep your Netflix email and password nearby because reinstalling returns the app to a clean sign-in state.

Fix a Netflix Household block

Use this when the TV says it is not part of your Netflix Household while the phone still plays Netflix. The TV needs to be confirmed on the home internet connection. From Netflix on the TV, press Back on the remote, or press Menu on Apple TV.

If the menu is at the top, move left to the profile icon. If the menu is on the left, go to the bottom. Select Get Help or Settings, then select Manage Netflix Household.

Select Update Netflix Household, then select Send Email. Open the email and select Yes, This Was Me. Select Confirm Update, then wait for the TV to refresh.

When you are traveling, make sure you are using a non-Kids profile, then choose I’m Traveling on the TV blocked message. Select Send Email. If the account does not have an email address on file, select Send Text instead.

Open the email or text link, then select Get Code. Enter the 4-digit code on the TV. Select Next.

When the TV is blocked at home, select This is My Account. Select Update Netflix Household, then select Troubleshoot This TV. Scan the QR code with your phone camera.

Confirm the phone is on home Wi-Fi. Tap Next, then tap Get Code. Scan the new TV QR code, then select Start Watching.

Replace an unsupported Netflix TV device

The most common cause on older TVs, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, and legacy streaming devices is an app or device software version that no longer meets Netflix requirements.

If Netflix shows R40, R12, R25-9, or Netflix is no longer available on this device, Netflix support for that device has already ended and there is no app repair for it.

If the message instead says Netflix will no longer be available on this device after a stated date, support is scheduled to end on that date, so follow the date shown on screen.

Once support has ended, use a supported smart TV, streaming stick or box, cable box, Blu-ray player, game console, or supported mobile-to-TV connection instead.

If Netflix shows NW-4-7 or an unsupported-version message, select More Details on the Netflix error screen. Select Device. Under SDK version or Platform version, check the SDK number.

If the SDK is 4.1.5 or below, the app or software cannot be updated to meet Netflix’s current requirements. If the SDK is 4.1.6 or above, continue with the TV and network troubleshooting steps.

If Netflix disappeared or is unavailable on Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation, use Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or another supported Netflix device.

Try the device specific reset path

Use the reset path for your TV platform when the basic restart and sign-out did not clear it.

  1. 1.On Samsung Smart TV, hold the remote Power button for more than 3 seconds until the TV turns off, keep holding Power until the Samsung logo reappears, then release Power and let the TV boot.
  2. 2.On Roku, press Home, then go to Settings, System, Power, and System restart. If there is no Power submenu, go straight to System restart.
  3. 3.On Fire TV, press Home, then select Settings, My Fire TV, and Restart.
  4. 4.On Google TV, go to Settings, System, and Restart.
  5. 5.On Apple TV, press the TV button twice quickly, navigate to Netflix, swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface to quit it, then reopen Netflix from the Home Screen.
  6. 6.For an HDMI black screen with sound, use an HDMI cable, reverse the cable ends, bypass receivers or sound systems, try another HDMI port, then try a new HDMI cable.

Use phone to TV playback the supported way

Phone-to-TV playback works through Netflix-supported casting devices, supported cables or adapters, and eligible plans. Wireless screen mirroring from an Android phone or tablet can also work through the device’s own mirroring feature, such as Smart View or Samsung DeX on Samsung phones, but Netflix does not support every device or mirroring app, so check with the device or app maker. AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad is not supported.

Open Netflix on your phone or tablet, sign in, tap Cast, and choose a compatible device. Use this casting route with Chromecast 3rd gen or older, Google Nest Hub Smart Display, select cast-enabled Vizio TVs, or select cast-enabled Compal TVs.

For Google TV Streamer, open Netflix on the phone or tablet, press Cast, and select the Google TV Streamer. Both devices must be signed into the same Netflix account.

For a missing Cast icon, check the mobile OS version. On Android, open Settings, System, Software updates, and System update; Netflix casting requires Android OS 9 or later.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, General, and About; Netflix casting requires iOS or iPadOS 16 or later.

Standard or Premium is required for casting or mirroring. Ad-supported Netflix experiences cannot use the TV as a display for Netflix content playing on a mobile device.

Do not use AirPlay or Apple Screen Mirroring for Netflix. If AVF:11870;OS:61001 appears, swipe down from the top of the iPhone or iPad screen, tap Screen Mirroring, tap Stop Mirroring, then use a supported cable, casting device, or the TV’s Netflix app.

If this method fails, fix the TV app directly or connect the phone or tablet to the TV with a supported video cable or adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Netflix work on my phone but not my TV?

The TV uses its own Netflix app session, device software, network connection, and Household status. A phone can keep playing on cellular data or a separate app session while the TV fails on home Wi-Fi, stale app data, or a Household check.

Should I reset my Netflix password?

Start with the TV fixes first. When Netflix already plays on your phone, the account is active, so restarting the TV device, resetting the home network, signing out on the TV, and reinstalling the TV app target the real failure point.

Why is Netflix saying my TV is not part of my Household?

The TV needs confirmation on the home internet connection. Open Netflix on the TV, go to Get Help or Settings, choose Manage Netflix Household, update the Household, and confirm the email Netflix sends.

Can I cast Netflix from my phone to the TV?

Yes, but only through supported devices and eligible plans. Netflix supports limited casting devices, requires Android OS 9 or later or iOS/iPadOS 16 or later, and ad-supported plans cannot use the TV as a display for mobile playback.
