Your iPhone receives texts silently when sound, Messages notifications, Focus, filtering, or Apple Watch routing gets in the way. Start with the fastest checks, then move into the settings that silence certain people, chats, or senders.

Current iOS places Messages controls under Settings > Apps > Messages. Some iPhone screens also show the route as Settings > Notifications > Messages.

Make Sure Your iPhone Can Ring

Use this first when every text arrives silently, not just messages from one person. A text tone cannot play while Silent mode is on or alert volume is too low.

On iPhone models with an Action button, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn Silent mode off.

On other iPhone models, move the Ring/Silent switch toward the front of the iPhone.

Stay in Settings > Sounds & Haptics, then drag the slider under Ringtone and Alerts to an audible level. In iOS 27, drag the volume slider under Ringtone instead. Alerts follow that volume by default, but if Match Ringtone Volume is off under Alerts and System Sounds, drag that separate slider up too, or turn Match Ringtone Volume back on.

Turn on Change with Buttons when you want the physical volume buttons to adjust alert volume.

Press the volume buttons while you are not on a call or playing media. You can also ask Siri, “Turn up the volume.”

Turn Messages Notifications Back On

If Messages notifications are off or set to no sound, turn them back on here.

  1. 1.Open Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications.
  2. 2.Turn Allow Notifications on.
  3. 3.Open Sounds and choose a tone instead of None.
  4. 4.Adjust the notification placement and appearance options you want.
  5. 5.If your iPhone shows the older route, open Settings > Notifications > Messages.
  6. 6.From Lock Screen or Notification Center, swipe left on a Messages alert, tap Options > View Settings, then restore Allow Notifications and Sounds.

Choose a Real Text Tone

Your iPhone also has a global text tone setting. When it is set to None, Messages and other apps stay silent unless Messages has its own separate sound selected.

Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone. Pick a sound under Alert Tones, or use Tone Store to download one.

After choosing a tone, ask someone to send a test message while the iPhone is locked. If the text tone still does not play, check Focus and Do Not Disturb next.

Switch Off Focus or Let Messages Through

This fixes text tones that disappear during certain times, places, apps, or routines.

Open Control Center.

Tap Focus.

Tap the active Focus to turn it off.

If Do Not Disturb is on, tap Do Not Disturb to turn it off.

For a Focus you want to keep, open Settings > Focus.

Choose the Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, or Work.

Tap Apps or Choose Apps.

Choose Allow Notifications From.

Tap Add Apps.

Select Messages.

Turn on Time Sensitive Notifications when you want those alerts to break through.

To allow one important sender, open the same Focus and tap People or Choose People.

Choose Allow Notifications From.

Tap Add People.

Select the contact.

Tap Done.

If text tones stop on a schedule, open Settings > Focus, choose the Focus, then edit the existing item under Set a Schedule.

On Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones, open Settings > Focus, tap the Add button (+) at the top right, then tap Reduce Interruptions. Tap Customize Focus, then tap People or Apps and allow the people and apps you want. If Reduce Interruptions already appears in your Focus list, tap it there instead of adding it again. Driving Focus does not allow apps through.

Unmute One Conversation or Contact

When only one person’s texts are silent, check the conversation and contact tone instead of global iPhone settings.

  1. 1.Open Messages and go to the conversation list.
  2. 2.Swipe left on the quiet conversation, then tap the Mute button to toggle alerts back on.
  3. 3.Or open the conversation, tap the contact or icon at the top, and turn Hide Alerts off.
  4. 4.For a contact tone, open a one-person conversation and tap the contact icon.
  5. 5.Tap Info > Edit > Edit Contact Info > Text Tone, then choose a sound under Alert Tones.
  6. 6.If Edit is not shown, tap Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact first.

Check Message Filtering in iOS 26 and Later

This fixes missing tones from unknown senders or messages that were filtered as spam.

In Messages, tap the Filters button.

Tap Manage Filtering.

Turn Screen Unknown Senders off when wanted messages from new senders are not alerting.

You can also open Settings > Apps > Messages, scroll to Unknown Senders, and turn Screen Unknown Senders off.

In the United States, Brazil, and India, open Unknown Senders > Allow Notifications and allow categories such as Time Sensitive, Personal, Transactions, or Promotions.

To make one sender known, open Messages > Filters > Unknown Senders.

Tap the conversation.

Tap Mark as Known.

You can also tap the sender’s email address or phone number at the top and choose Create New Contact.

If a wanted text landed in spam, open Messages > Filters > Spam.

Tap the message.

Tap Not Spam.

Choose Move to Inbox or Move to Inbox and Report Not Spam.

To disable spam filtering completely, open Messages > Filters > Manage Filtering and turn Filter Spam off.

Look at Apple Watch Alert Behavior

If you wear an Apple Watch, messages route there instead of your iPhone in one common setup. When iPhone is unlocked, notifications go to iPhone; when iPhone is locked or asleep, notifications go to Apple Watch unless the watch is locked.

Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, then go to My Watch > Notifications > Messages. Choose Mirror my iPhone, or use Custom and choose Allow Notifications.

On Apple Watch, press the side button to open Control Center, then turn Silent Mode off. For watch alert volume, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics on the watch. On Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, or later with watchOS 26 or later, Automatically Adjust Volume can be on: tap Level and choose Louder, Default, or Quieter, or turn Automatically Adjust Volume off to set a constant level. On other watches, drag the volume slider up.

Also check watch Focus: press the side button to open Control Center, then tap the Focus control to turn off the active Focus. When Do Not Disturb is the active Focus, this control is the Do Not Disturb button. If alerts are still quiet after the watch settings look right, restart the iPhone and check for an iOS update.

Restart Update and Reset Settings

A normal restart is the right next move when notification settings look correct but text audio is still stuck. On iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, or later, press and hold either Volume button and the Side button until the power-off slider appears, drag the slider, wait 30 seconds, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

On iPhone 6, iPhone 7, iPhone 8, or iPhone SE 2nd or 3rd generation, press and hold the Side button until the power-off slider appears, drag it, wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. If the iPhone is frozen, use the force restart sequence for your model: on iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation) and all Face ID models, press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button; on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, hold the Side button and Volume Down; on iPhone 6s and earlier, hold the Home button and the Side button or Top button.

Next, open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen instructions; you can also connect iPhone to a computer, select it in Finder on macOS 10.15 or later or iTunes on Windows or macOS 10.14 or earlier, then choose Check for Update > Update.

When everything else fails, use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. This resets settings including network, keyboard dictionary, location, privacy, and Apple Pay cards, but it does not delete your data or media.

Check Managed or Work iPhones

If your iPhone belongs to a school or workplace, it may be supervised and enrolled in device management. On a supervised iPhone, an administrator can control app notification settings, including Sounds. Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management to see whether the device is managed.

When the iPhone is managed, contact the school or work administrator about Messages notification sound settings. Remove management only if you own the iPhone and are allowed to do so.

If the iPhone is not managed, return to Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications and confirm Allow Notifications and Sounds are enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my iPhone vibrate but not play a text tone?

Check Silent mode first, then raise the Ringtone and Alerts volume. In iOS 27, raise the Ringtone slider, and the Alerts and System Sounds slider too if Match Ringtone Volume is off. After that, set Messages Sounds and the global Text Tone to a real alert instead of None.

Why are unknown texts not making a sound in iOS 26?

Screen Unknown Senders and Filter Spam can move texts out of the normal inbox. Turn off Screen Unknown Senders, mark the sender as known, or move the message out of Spam.

Can Siri announce Messages instead of relying on the text tone?

Yes. Open Settings > Notifications > Announce Notifications and turn Announce Notifications on. On iOS 26, the same switch is also under Settings > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Announce Notifications. Then tap Messages and make sure Siri is set to announce its notifications.

Will Reset All Settings delete my messages?

No. Reset All Settings changes settings such as network, keyboard dictionary, location, privacy, and Apple Pay cards, but it does not delete data or media.
