An HP laptop screen display problem can show up as a black screen, frozen image, flicker, wrong colors, blurry text, or an external monitor that will not connect. Start with the fast resets, then move into Windows settings, HP updates, diagnostics, and service checks.

Work through the fixes in order. The early ones take seconds, and the later ones help pin down whether the problem is software, the built-in screen, or hardware.

Start with a power reset

When an HP Windows laptop turns on but the display stays blank or frozen, a power reset is the fastest first move. Shut down the computer, disconnect the AC adapter, and remove every peripheral device.

Press and hold Power for about 15 to 20 seconds.

Reconnect the AC adapter only, then press Power again to start the laptop.

If the screen still stays black, try the Windows graphics reset and display-output checks next.

Reset the graphics output in Windows

This applies when Windows is running but the HP screen is black, frozen, flickering, or sending the picture to the wrong display after sleep, docking, or using another monitor. You can do both fixes from the keyboard.

Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows may beep or briefly flicker while it resets the graphics driver.

Press Windows + P.

Tap P again, then press Enter to cycle display modes such as PC screen only, Duplicate, and Extend.

Check an external monitor

An external monitor helps separate a bad laptop panel from a Windows or graphics-driver issue.

  1. 1.Connect an external monitor or TV to the HP laptop using the supported display output for your model.
  2. 2.Restart the computer with the external display connected.
  3. 3.If no image appears, press f4 or the key with the monitor symbol until the screen image appears.
  4. 4.If the external display works, install the latest HP graphics, chipset, and BIOS updates for your exact model.
  5. 5.If the external display also fails, contact HP for service.

Update HP and Windows display software

Open HP Support Assistant in Windows, and make sure you are on version 8 or later. HP does not offer HP Support Assistant for Windows in S mode or for ARM-based PCs, so use Windows Update on those machines.

On My Dashboard, find your computer, select Updates, wait for the analysis, then download and install the listed updates.

For a manual HP update, go to HP Customer Support Software and Driver Downloads, choose Laptop, enter the model name or serial number, and download the correct graphics, chipset, BIOS, firmware, or display and monitor driver for that exact laptop. This route does not apply to Windows in S mode, where HP does not distribute drivers through HP.com or HP Support Assistant and Windows Update is the only source.

Run Windows Update as well. On Windows 11, select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

If optional driver updates appear, open Advanced options > Optional updates on Windows 11, or Advanced options > View optional updates on Windows 10, select the updates, then choose Download & install.

Use the exact HP model or serial number for HP downloads so you get the right graphics or BIOS package.

Fix flickering or scrambled graphics after Windows loads

This applies when the screen flickers, flashes, or shows scrambled graphics after the desktop starts. The Task Manager test tells you whether to focus on the display driver or an app.

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager. If that does not appear, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

If Task Manager flickers with everything else, search for Device Manager, open it, expand Display adapters, right-click the adapter, and select Update driver.

If the problem started after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, choose Roll Back Driver, select Yes, and restart.

If rollback is not available, use Uninstall Device, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device when shown, which Windows 10 labels Delete the driver software for this device, then restart so Windows can reinstall the driver.

If Task Manager stays steady while the rest of the screen flickers, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10, select the problem app, choose Uninstall, confirm with Uninstall, and restart.

Correct blurry text wrong size and sideways screens

Open Start > Settings > System > Display.

Select the display you want to change.

Under Scale & layout, choose the Scale option marked Recommended.

In Display resolution, choose the resolution marked Recommended.

For a sideways or rotated screen, use Display orientation and choose the correct orientation.

For flicker or external monitor instability, open Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, choose the display, and set a supported Refresh rate. On Windows 10, the same page is Start > Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.

If you use more than one screen, go back to Start > Settings > System > Display, use Identify to label the displays, and use Detect when Windows does not show the monitor.

Recommended scale and resolution are usually the cleanest settings for an HP laptop panel.

Restore normal brightness and color

The most common cause of strange color is an accessibility or display setting changed by accident.

For brightness on Windows 11, select the Network, Sound, or Battery icons on the right side of the taskbar, then move the Brightness slider. On Windows 10, select action center on the right side of the taskbar, then move the Brightness slider.

You can also open Start > Settings > System > Display and adjust brightness there.

If the screen looks too warm at night or changes color on a schedule, open Start > Settings > System > Display > Night light, or Start > Settings > System > Display > Night light settings on Windows 10.

Adjust Strength or Schedule night light.

When the display looks grayscale, inverted, or color-shifted, press Windows logo key + U, select Color filters, and turn Color filters off.

Use Safe Mode or System Restore after a bad change

This applies when the normal Windows desktop cannot be used or the HP display problem started right after a driver, app, or update change. Use Windows Recovery to get into Safe Mode.

Hold Power for 10 seconds to force a shutdown.

Repeat that two or three times until Windows enters Recovery Mode.

Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.

Press F5 to start Safe Mode with Networking.

From Safe Mode, update, roll back, or uninstall the display driver, or remove a recently installed app.

If restore points are enabled, use Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore.

Choose a restore point from before the screen problem began.

Run HP diagnostics and BIOS recovery

Turn off the computer by holding Power for at least five seconds.

Turn it on and immediately press esc repeatedly, about once per second.

When the menu appears, press f2.

In HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, select Symptom Tests, choose the symptom that matches the display issue, and follow the on-screen instructions.

For broader hardware checks, open System Tests, choose Extensive Test, then select Run once or Loop until error.

Record any Failure ID for HP support.

If the HP laptop starts but the display remains blank and your notebook supports manual BIOS recovery, turn the computer off, connect AC power, then press and hold Windows + b on the built-in keyboard and press and hold Power for 2 to 3 seconds. Release Power but keep holding Windows + b until the HP BIOS Update screen appears and recovery begins. Some notebook models use Windows + v instead, and HP does not support this manual process on notebooks with HP Sure Start, which repairs BIOS corruption on its own, so check the recovery instructions for your exact model first.

If diagnostics are not installed, use HP’s official PC Hardware Diagnostics page to download the Windows or UEFI diagnostics tools.

A failure ID, visible screen damage, cracks, liquid damage, black patches, or persistent lines means it is time to contact HP support or arrange service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my HP laptop on but the screen is black?

A blank HP laptop screen can come from a frozen display state, wrong projection mode, graphics driver issue, BIOS problem, or hardware failure. Start with a power reset, reset the graphics output, check an external monitor, and run HP diagnostics if the screen stays blank.

How do I know if the HP laptop screen itself is damaged?

Connect an external monitor and restart the laptop. If the external display works while the built-in screen stays blank, shows lines, black patches, cracks, or liquid damage, the built-in display likely needs HP service.

Can Windows Update fix an HP display problem?

Yes. Windows Update can install display-related updates, including optional driver updates. HP Support Assistant or HP’s driver download page is still the better source for model-specific graphics, chipset, BIOS, firmware, and monitor drivers.

What should I do for an HP Chromebook with a blank screen?

Turn it off, then press and hold Refresh and tap Power. When it starts, release Refresh. Google says this hardware reset may delete some files in Downloads.
