To fix Essential Network not connecting, check Essential’s service status, refresh your Minecraft launcher login, and update Essential before changing network settings. If the error happens only when joining a world, use the fix that matches that error. Account authentication failures and world connection failures need different checks.

The short version

  • Check service status: Wait for authentication or connection incidents to be resolved before retrying.
  • Refresh your login: Sign out of your Minecraft launcher and sign back in with an account entitled to play Java Edition.
  • Check Essential: Enable its features and updates, and use a supported Minecraft and modloader combination.
  • Match the error: Check multiplayer permissions for account restrictions, DNS for host lookup errors, and firewall or VPN interference for world connection failures.

Check Essential service status first

Open Essential’s official status page at status.essential.gg and check Connection Manager, Features, and Third-party. If an incident affects authentication or connections, wait for it to be resolved before retrying.

After a Mojang or Microsoft authentication outage ends, close Minecraft completely and launch it again. Essential recommends restarting the game when authentication does not recover automatically. If the service has recovered but your connection still fails, refresh your launcher session next.

Refresh your Minecraft account session

Signing out ends your current Minecraft account session in the launcher. Sign out, close the launcher, reopen it, and sign in again before launching Minecraft. This also addresses stale authentication after changing your Minecraft username.

Use a Microsoft account entitled to play Minecraft Java Edition. Essential requires Mojang authentication and does not support cracked Minecraft or TLauncher. If you already own Java Edition, sign in with that account rather than buying it again. Sign in only through Microsoft’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you.

When the wrong account is selected inside Essential, select Account, represented by your player head at the main menu, and choose the intended account. To add an account, select + or Add Account, select Open Browser, then select Login and sign in with Microsoft. For an invalid session, use the launcher sign-out and sign-in procedure above.

Enable Essential and use a supported build

From Minecraft’s home screen, select Options > Essential Settings, then turn on Essential under General. This applies when Essential was disabled, including when another mod installed it.

Open Essential Settings > General and enable Automatic Essential updates. Restart Minecraft to load an installed update. For a manual update, open the available update through its in-game notification or the Essential menu, choose installation for the next restart, and restart Minecraft.

Compare your Minecraft version and modloader with the options on the official Essential download page. Match both when choosing a download, because support depends on the combination. Essential warns that retired builds may stop connecting at any time and receive neither updates nor support.

For a fresh supported installation on Windows 10 or Windows 11, or macOS 10.15 or later, open the Essential Installer and select Get Started. Choose Minecraft Launcher, Prism Launcher, or CurseForge Launcher, then pick a supported modloader and Minecraft version. Select Create & Install, open that launcher, and launch the new installation. Use the fresh installation to check for installation or compatibility problems.

If the installer fails or cannot detect your launcher, download the matching Essential mod with the appropriate modloader already installed. In Minecraft Launcher, open Installations, select the intended profile’s folder icon, and open or create its mods folder. Place the Essential JAR there and launch that profile.

Essential lists conflicting mods including Luna, PackMenu, Custom Main Menu, VulkanMod, and Drippy Loading Screen. In CurseForge, right-click the modpack image, select Profile Options, enable Allow content management for this profile, and select done. Open the modpack’s Content tab, find the documented or identified conflicting mod, and disable it.

In Prism Launcher, right-click the modpack, select Edit, open Mods, and disable the identified conflicting mod. If adding Essential causes a crash, run Essential alone in a separate instance to isolate the conflict.

Correct an inaccurate computer clock

Check your computer’s date, time, and time zone, and correct them if they are wrong. Essential recommends checking the clock when troubleshooting a network error.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Turn on Set time automatically, then turn on Set time zone automatically or choose the correct Time zone manually. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time to make those same corrections.

For manual clock correction on Windows 10 or Windows 11, turn off Set time automatically. On Windows 11, select Change next to Set the date and time; on Windows 10, select Change under Set the date and time manually. In the Change date and time window, enter the correct Date and Time, and select Change.

On a Mac using System Settings, open System Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set time and date automatically. Select Set, enter an appropriate network time server, and select Done. Turn on Set time zone automatically using your current location.

Allow multiplayer on your Xbox account

A grayed-out multiplayer button or an older-version login error can point to blocked multiplayer permissions. Sign in to the Xbox account settings and open Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 devices Online Safety. The Windows 10 wording is part of the tab’s name.

Set You can play with people outside of Xbox Live, You can join multiplayer games, and You can add friends to Allow. For a family-managed account, an adult must make these changes. Allow up to 24 hours for them to take effect, and contact Microsoft Support if restrictions persist.

If the account needs adult management and is not already in the appropriate family group, have the adult sign in at family.microsoft.com. Select Add a family member, then provide the affected account’s email address and assign it the Member role. The invited account completes the email invitation before the adult grants the multiplayer permissions.

Change DNS for host lookup errors

A No such host is known error referencing Essential’s STUN or TURN hosts is a reason to try Essential’s DNS instructions. This is not a universal fix for every ICE failed error.

On Windows 11, press Windows, search for Settings, and open Settings > Network & internet > Properties. Beside DNS server assignment, select Edit, choose Manual, and enable IPv4. Set Preferred DNS to 1.1.1.1 and Alternate DNS to 1.0.0.1, enable DNS over HTTPS for both entries, and save the changes.

On a Mac using Wi-Fi, open the Apple menu > System Settings... > Wi-Fi. Select Details beside your connected network, then select DNS. Under DNS Servers, select + to add 1.1.1.1, repeat for 1.0.0.1, and select OK.

Repair altered Mojang authentication redirects

Use this fix only when your computer has altered Mojang entries in its hosts file, including redirects left by unofficial authentication software. You need administrator access to make the changes.

On Windows, search for Notepad, right-click it, select Run as Administrator, and select Yes. Open File > Open, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\, choose All Files in the file-type dropdown, and open hosts. Removing these entries deletes the specified Mojang authentication redirects from the hosts file. Remove lines containing mojang that redirect authentication, save the file, and restart the computer.

On macOS or Linux, open Terminal to edit the hosts file. Run this command:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

Enter your administrator password when prompted. Removing these entries deletes the specified Mojang authentication redirects from the hosts file. Remove lines containing mojang that redirect authentication. Press Ctrl + O to save, confirm the filename with Enter, then press Ctrl + X to exit and restart the computer.

Match world connection fixes to the error

For ICE failed or Not whitelisted, restart the affected computer and router, especially on the host’s side, then retry hosting or joining. Essential identifies strict firewall rules and VPN interference as possible causes of ICE failures. Continue with those checks if the restart does not help.

On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall > Change settings. Select Allow another app to add the executable actually running Minecraft Java. Its name and location depend on your launcher and runtime. On a managed PC, ask the administrator to review the applicable rule.

On a Mac using System Settings, open the Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options. Use the add button to add the relevant game or runtime app, then use its connection control to permit access. Review Block all incoming connections if it is enabled; the runtime entry varies by launcher.

If you have a single Windows-configured VPN on Windows 11, select the taskbar area containing Network, Volume, and Battery, select VPN, and turn its quick-setting toggle off before retrying. For a VPN controlled by a separate app, use that provider’s documented disconnect control. In Proton VPN on macOS, select Disconnect on the main screen and retry Essential.

For Registry remapping failed, a mismatched mod channel list, or an unknown recipe serializer, make sure every player has the same required mods and matching versions. Restart the instances after matching them.

When invitations are missing or you cannot find Join Game, have every player close and restart Minecraft. The host should wait until everyone has restarted, then open the world and send invitations again. To join, open Social > Chat, select the friend, and select Join Game.

Confirm that hosting is active by opening the Essential menu, selecting Host, choosing the world, and selecting Start Hosting. Choose the friends to invite and confirm Add Members. The host must keep the game online while others connect.

Collect debug logs for Essential support

If the applicable fixes fail, follow the Discord support link on Essential’s Network Error page at essential.gg/wiki/essential-network-error. Include the exact error, Minecraft version, modloader, launcher, and troubleshooting results. For world-hosting failures, both players should collect logs.

For Fabric in Minecraft Launcher, open Installations > the installation’s ... menu > Edit > More Options. Essential says Forge debug logging is already enabled for this launcher. For Fabric, prefix JVM Arguments with the following argument and a space, preserving the existing arguments:

-Dessential.debuglog=debug

Reproduce the failure, then open Installations and select the profile’s folder icon. Open logs, locate debug or debug.log, and provide it to Essential support.

For Fabric in Prism Launcher, right-click the instance and open Edit > Settings. Enable Java Arguments and add -Dessential.debuglog=debug to the argument field. Essential says Forge logging is already enabled for Prism Launcher. Reproduce the problem, then open Edit > Version > Open .minecraft and locate debug or debug.log in logs for support.

In CurseForge, open the gear button and select Minecraft. For Fabric, add -Dessential.debuglog=debug to Additional Arguments; for Forge, enable Forge debug.log. Close Minecraft and CurseForge, reopen them, and reproduce the error. Open the modpack’s ⋮ menu beside the play button, select Open Folder, and locate debug or debug.log in logs for Essential support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should you do if an Essential friend request times out?

Have the other player send the friend request instead. This workaround applies to timeouts while adding a friend, rather than general Essential Network authentication failures.

Will these fixes make Essential work on Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

No, Essential runs in Minecraft Java Edition and does not support Bedrock Edition or consoles. Unsupported mobile Java launchers also fall outside its supported platforms.

What should you do if Essential explicitly says your account is banned?

Open the Essential Ban Appeal Form linked from Essential’s Banned Accounts page at essential.gg/wiki/banned-accounts. Provide your username and explain why you believe the ban is mistaken, then submit one appeal. This applies to an explicit Essential account ban.

How many players can connect to an Essential hosted world?

Essential’s current hosting interface supports up to eight connected players. Keep that limit in mind when choosing whom to invite.

Why can Essential return after you remove it?

Mods that depend on Essential may reinstall it if you remove Essential while keeping those mods. Removing Essential takes away its functionality and does not restore an Essential Network connection.
