Discord multi factor authentication not working blocks sign-in even when your password is right. Start with the fastest checks, then use the recovery method your account already has: backup codes, SMS MFA, a passkey, a security key, an authenticator app, or a device that is still logged in.
Check Discord before changing settings
This applies when the MFA prompt spins, fails to load, rejects a valid code, or never moves to the next screen. A Discord service issue can break account security screens while your code or passkey is still valid.
Open Discord Status and check for All Systems Operational.
Look closely at API, Client, Desktop, iOS, Android, Web, and Third-party.
When Discord shows an active outage, wait until the affected service is resolved, then retry MFA.
Use a fresh authenticator code
Open the authenticator app that stores your Discord entry.
Select the Discord code, not a code for another account or service.
Wait for a new 6 digit code when the current one is close to expiring.
Enter the current code on Discord’s MFA prompt and select Confirm.
For Google Authenticator, make sure the phone’s date, time, and local time zone are correct before entering another code.
Ignore old instructions for Time correction for codes and Sync now. Google Authenticator 7.0 no longer has that setting and uses the operating system time instead.
Recover missing Google Authenticator codes
When the Discord code disappeared after a phone change or account switch, check where Google Authenticator is storing it.

- 2.Confirm you are signed in to the Google Account that stores your Discord code.
- 3.Switch to another Google Account when the Discord entry is missing.
- 4.Tap the profile icon, then Use without an account, to check locally stored codes. Google warns that this action removes your codes from all of your Google Accounts and stores them on that device only, so try switching Google Accounts first and keep this option for last.
- 5.On an old phone that still has the code, use Menu, Transfer codes, Export codes, then use Import codes and Scan QR code on the new phone.
Use a backup code to get back in
This is the right fix when your authenticator app keeps failing and you saved Discord backup codes earlier. Backup codes are one-time use, so enter an unused 8 digit code.
At the Discord authenticator-code prompt, choose Verify with something else.
Select Use a backup code.
Enter the unused backup code and select Confirm.
After you regain access, open User Settings, go to My Account, choose Remove Authenticator App, and select Okay.
Set up MFA again right away with a working authenticator app, security key, passkey, or SMS after authenticator setup.
Try SMS MFA only if it was already enabled
SMS works as a recovery path only when it was already enabled on your Discord account. Discord allows SMS MFA only after an authenticator app is already set up.
At the authenticator-code prompt, select Verify with something else, then choose Use a code sent to your phone. Enter the SMS code and select Confirm.
For SMS setup or delivery failures, confirm the phone number is properly formatted, valid for your country, not a landline, not VOIP, and not registered to another Discord account. When the number is attached to another Discord account, remove it from that account first.
Once you are back in, go to User Settings, open My Account, choose Remove Authenticator App, select Okay, and set up MFA again.
Sign in with a passkey or security key
This fixes MFA failures when your Discord account already has a registered passkey or hardware security key.
On the Discord sign-in screen, choose Or, sign in with Passkey instead.
Complete your device's passkey prompt with Face ID, fingerprint, screen lock, PIN, or password-manager approval.
For a hardware security key, enter your username and password first.
Choose Authenticate with security key.
Connect the key when prompted, then touch or activate it.
After you regain access, register a fresh passkey from User Settings, My Account, Password and Authentication, and Register a Security Key. Discord allows up to 16 security keys or passkeys.
Fix passkeys that do not appear
Discord passkeys stop appearing when your device, browser, or password manager is not offering the saved passkey.
On Apple devices, turn on AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys from Settings or System Settings, then General, then AutoFill & Passwords.
For iCloud Keychain, open Settings, tap [your name], then choose iCloud. Under Saved to iCloud, tap Passwords & Keychain or Passwords, whichever appears. If neither is listed, tap See All next to Saved to iCloud first. Turn on Sync this iPhone or Sync this iPad, or iCloud Keychain if that is the switch shown.
On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, open Settings, go to Privacy & security, then Passkey access. Find Discord or the browser you use for Discord and allow passkey access.
In Chrome, open More, choose Passwords and autofill, then Google Password Manager. Use Settings or Manage passkeys to confirm passkeys are available in your Chrome profile.
Remove a broken passkey and enroll it again
When a saved Discord passkey no longer works, sign in with your username and password first, then use the passkey on the MFA challenge screen. If it fails again, use another MFA method or a backup code to access Discord.
On Mac, open Passwords, sign in, select the Discord account, and choose Delete Passkey. On macOS Sonoma or earlier, use Apple menu, System Settings, Passwords, the Discord entry, Show Details, and Delete Passkey.
On Windows, open Settings, go to Accounts, then Passkeys. Find the Discord passkey, open the more options control next to it, and choose Delete passkey.
Return to Discord and enroll a new passkey from Account Settings. Delete the old passkey from Discord’s Account Settings screen after the replacement works.
Use a logged-in Discord session
If a phone, computer, browser, or tablet is still signed in, use that session to look for unused backup codes. Being signed in does not remove the verification requirement: the recovery procedure below still needs an unused backup code to remove the authenticator app.
Open Discord on the device where your account still works.
Select the cogwheel to open User Settings.

Enter your password when Discord asks for it.
View or download your backup codes.

Verify that the link starts with https://discord.com/wasntme/ and keep it private. Follow Start revert process and set a new password. Can I use Authy to recover my Discord code?
Yes, if the Discord token remains usable on an Authy device or can be restored from an encrypted backup using the Backups password. If the token was never backed up and the only device holding it is lost or reset, Authy cannot restore it. If you forget the Backups password and have no active device with decrypted tokens, the encrypted backup is also inaccessible. Twilio cannot recover that password. If all your tokens are still decrypted on an active device, open Settings, then Accounts, and choose Change Backup Key, or Change Password if that is the option shown, to set a new one.
