A Discord backup code not working usually means the code was already used, typed in the wrong recovery path, or no longer available on that account. Discord supports only a short list of recovery paths for MFA lockouts.
You can get back in with an unused 8-digit backup code, another enrolled MFA method, QR login from a signed-in phone, or the 48-hour email-change recovery flow when the account email was changed. An active signed-in session on another device helps too, but it is not a bypass on its own: it lets you see which backup codes are still unused, and removing or rebuilding MFA from that session still takes an unused backup code or another verification method. Start with the fastest option that still applies to your account.
Enter the backup code at login
The same path works in Discord's desktop app, browser app, and mobile app. Sign in with your email or phone and password, then wait for the authenticator-code prompt.
Choose Verify with something else, select Use a backup code, type one unused 8-digit Discord backup code, and press Confirm.
A backup code works only once. Try another saved code when the one you entered has already been used.
When Use a backup code is missing, Discord says all backup codes for the account have been used.
Find the saved codes before trying again
Use this path when you remember saving backup codes but the one in front of you keeps failing. Discord says codes may be saved locally, as a screenshot, on paper, or in a password manager.
Search your computer and cloud storage for discord_backup_codes.txt, the default file name Discord names for saved backup codes.
Check your phone's photo gallery for a screenshot.
Check your password manager and any printed copies you normally keep with recovery codes.
Once you find another unused 8-digit code, go back to Verify with something else, choose Use a backup code, enter the code, and select Confirm.
Switch to SMS if it was already enabled
This fixes a failed backup-code attempt when SMS MFA was already enabled on the Discord account.
Sign in with your email or phone and password until Discord asks for the MFA code.
Select Verify with something else.
Choose Use a code sent to your phone.
Enter the SMS code.
Select Confirm.
After you are back in, open User Settings.
Go to My Account and select Remove Authenticator App if the old authenticator setup needs to be removed.
Press Okay.
On desktop or browser, return to My Account, find Multi-Factor Authentication under Password and Authentication, and press Enable Authenticator App to set MFA up again. On mobile, tap your avatar in the bottom-right, tap the cogwheel in the top-right, press Account, and select Enable Authenticator App.
SMS cannot be added after you are locked out; it only helps if it was already set up.
View codes from an open Discord session
If any device is still signed in, use that session to see which backup codes are still unused.
- 1.On desktop or browser, select the cogwheel next to your username and open My Account.
- 2.Under Password and Authentication, select View Backup Codes.
- 3.Enter your Discord password when prompted.
- 4.Review which codes are used or unused, then download them.
- 5.On mobile, tap your avatar, open the cogwheel, go to Account or My Account, and choose View Backup Codes.
Remove and rebuild the authenticator setup
When you still have one unused backup code and an active Discord session, remove the old authenticator setup instead of repeatedly trying the same login screen. Open User Settings, choose My Account, and use View Backup Codes first if you need to confirm which code is unused.
Select Remove Authenticator App, choose Verify with something else, enter an unused 8-digit backup code, and press Confirm.
Set MFA up again from My Account and Password and Authentication. Download the new backup codes while you are still signed in.
Try a passkey or security key
The most common cause here is a used backup code, while another MFA factor on the account still works.
For a passkey, use the saved passkey prompt on the Discord login screen.
When the prompt is not on screen, select Or, sign in with Passkey instead.
Complete Face ID, fingerprint, screen lock, or password-manager approval.
For a security key, sign in with your username or email and password.
Choose Authenticate with security key on the MFA challenge screen.
Interact with the hardware security key or platform security key when Discord asks for it.
Recover the authenticator code
This fixes the problem when the enrolled authenticator token can still generate a current 6-digit Discord code.
Open the authenticator app that was enrolled for Discord.
Choose the Discord entry for the correct account.
Enter the current 6-digit code on Discord's MFA prompt before it expires.
Select Confirm.
For Google Authenticator sync, install or open Google Authenticator on the new device and sign in with the same Google Account. Google says this feature needs Google Authenticator version 6.0 or above on Android, or version 4.0 or above on iOS, so update the app first if sync does not appear.
Find the Discord code, then use the current 6-digit code at Discord login.
For Google Authenticator transfer from an old device, open Menu, choose Transfer accounts, and select Export accounts on the old device. Google says manual transfer needs the latest Google Authenticator version installed on that old device.
On the new device, open Menu, choose Transfer accounts, select Import accounts, and scan the QR code.
Make sure the device time is synced for the local time zone before trying a Google Authenticator code again.
For Authy backups, recover access with the phone number flow.
Enter the Authy backups password to decrypt synced tokens.
Use the Discord token's current 6-digit Authy code at Discord login.
Authy says the backups password or key cannot be recovered or reset through its recovery request.
Log in with a QR code from your phone
QR Code Login helps when you are locked out on desktop or browser but still signed in on Discord mobile. The QR code on the desktop or browser login screen expires after 2 minutes.
Open the desktop or browser login screen and display the QR code. On the signed-in mobile app, tap your user profile image in the bottom-right, open the cogwheel, and scroll to Scan QR Code under Account Settings.
Scan only the QR code you generated yourself, then tap Log in. After the desktop or browser session opens, go to User Settings and My Account to view backup codes or remove and reconfigure MFA when you can complete the required challenge.
If this method fails, try an already enrolled SMS method, passkey, security key, authenticator app, or an active signed-in session on another device.
Use account recovery to undo a changed email
Check the original email inbox for a Discord Email Address changed message when someone changed the account email.
Select Start Account Recovery from that email within 48 hours.
Confirm the page URL begins with https://discord.com/wasntme/.
Choose Start revert process.
Set a new password and follow the prompts. Discord says this process changes the email back, logs out all devices, removes the phone number, and removes MFA methods.
Use https://dis.gd/hackedaccount for Discord's compromised-account support route when the account was accessed by someone else, and include required details such as unauthorized transactions when they apply.
Skip older fixes that tell you to get Support-issued backup codes, ask Support to remove MFA for a normal lockout, reset your password to bypass MFA, add SMS after lockout, use backup codes for passkey registration, or use Google Authenticator's old in-app time-correction menu.
After you regain access, open View Backup Codes and download the current codes while the session is still open.

Why is Use a backup code missing in Discord?
It depends where you are. At the MFA sign-in prompt, Discord says a missing Use a backup code option means all backup codes for the account have been used. Can Discord Support give me new backup codes?
