Discord’s “Messages Failed to Load” error leaves you staring at an empty conversation. Start with a quick outage check and restart, then work out whether the trouble follows your app, connection, or account. That gives you a clear next step without resetting everything at once.

Check whether Discord is having an outage

Open Discord Status and inspect API, Gateway, and client incidents for a failure matching yours.

If an incident matches, wait for Discord’s recovery update before reloading. Changing settings on your device will not resolve a service-side incident.

If there is no matching incident, or messages still fail after recovery, refresh Discord and fully restart the app next.

When a refresh fails, fully restart Discord

Start here when the desktop app stops loading conversations. If a refresh does not restore them, close Discord completely before reopening it.

With Discord focused, press Ctrl+R on Windows, or Command+R on macOS.

On Windows, fully close Discord, including remaining Discord processes in Task Manager.

Wait 30 seconds before reopening Discord.

On a Mac, press Command+Q to quit Discord.

Open Activity Monitor through Spotlight or Siri.

Terminate any remaining Discord processes.

Reopen Discord.

On an iPhone without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and pause to show your open apps. On a model with a Home button, double-click that button instead.

Swipe Discord’s preview upward to close it.

Reopen Discord.

On a Google Pixel, use Settings > Apps > See all apps > Discord > Force stop > OK.

Open Discord again. Other Android manufacturers use different menu labels.

Narrow it down with another client and connection

Keep the account and conversation the same while you compare where messages load.

  1. 1.On a computer, visit Discord’s homepage, select Open Discord in your browser, and sign in. Discord does not support mobile browsers.
  2. 2.Open the same conversation in another supported client or desktop browser, then test another working connection, such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular data.
  3. 3.Compare the results. Failure in one app points toward that client; failure on one connection points toward the network. A conversation that fails across clients and networks calls for account or channel checks.
  4. 4.For an iPhone cellular test, open Settings > Cellular, labeled Mobile Data in some regions. Enable cellular data and the Discord switch, then turn Wi-Fi off. This requires an active data plan.
  5. 5.On public Wi-Fi, complete the network’s sign-in page before reopening Discord. On a Pixel, tap the network’s Sign in notification to reach it.
  6. 6.If your home connection is the problem, unplug the router or modem for 15 seconds. Reconnect it, wait for normal connection lights, and retry Discord. Follow the device manual if its restart procedure differs.

Bring the affected app up to date

Install the current Discord version before making broader changes. If the desktop client cannot update, download the installer for your operating system from Discord’s official download page.

On Windows, open the downloaded DiscordSetup.exe to start the installation. On macOS, open the Discord.dmg file and drag the Discord logo onto the Applications folder. On a Debian-based Linux distribution, install the downloaded package with sudo apt install ./package.deb, substituting its filename, or follow your package manager’s installation prompts.

On the current iPhone or iPad interface, open App Store > My Account > App Updates, using your account photo if it appears instead of the My Account button. Older supported OS releases have different update layouts.

Select Update beside Discord.

On Android, open Play Store > Profile icon > Manage apps & device.

Under Updates available, select See details.

Select Update beside Discord.

If your phone lacks space, remove unnecessary local downloads or unused apps.

Retry the update.

Discord’s current desktop app requires macOS 13 or later. On a compatible Mac running macOS 12, use Spotlight or Siri to search for Software Update, then open it. On macOS versions that use System Settings, the same tool is at Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.

Install the compatible macOS upgrade offered. If your Mac cannot upgrade, use a browser that remains compatible with your OS and meets Discord’s requirements.

If messages still fail in an updated, supported client, clear that client’s cache next.

Clear the affected client’s cache

Local cached data is a troubleshooting target when messages fail in one client but load elsewhere.

On Windows, fully quit Discord.

Open %appdata%/discord/Cache in File Explorer.

Remove the folder’s cached contents.

Reopen Discord.

On macOS, fully quit Discord.

In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder to open ~/Library/Application Support/discord/Cache.

Remove the cached contents.

Reopen Discord.

On a Pixel, select Settings > Apps > See all apps > Discord > Storage & cache > Clear cache.

On a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, select Settings > Apps > Discord > Storage > Clear cache. Samsung’s labels vary by software version.

Clearing cache removes local cached files. Your server-stored conversation history stays intact. Android’s Clear storage and Clear data controls perform a broader reset, removing local settings and your sign-in session.

Restore your session and channel access

These checks address your sign-in session, required verification, and missing channel permissions.

On desktop or browser, open User Settings using the cogwheel.

Select Log Out.

Sign back into the affected account.

Reopen the conversation to test the new session.

If Discord displays an account verification challenge, select Start Verification.

Enter a valid mobile number.

Select Next.

Enter the SMS verification code.

Complete any displayed CAPTCHA.

If a server requires verified email, select User Settings > My Account > Resend Verification Email.

Follow the verification email you receive.

If only one server channel lacks messages, ask a server administrator to review your role through Server name menu > Server Settings > Roles > affected role > Permissions.

Ask the administrator to check the channel’s Channel cogwheel > Permissions > affected member or role, including View Channel and Read Message History. Missing channel access is a separate problem from messages failing across all conversations.

Troubleshoot the browser or message display

Use these checks when Discord works elsewhere but fails in your usual browser, or when the desktop message area is blank, frozen, or lagging. Choose the action that matches the failure.

For memory pressure or page crashes in desktop Chrome, close unused tabs.

Stop unnecessary tasks.

Select Reload this page.

Open Discord in an Incognito window to compare loading. Extensions permitted in Incognito still run there.

If Discord works there, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions in your regular profile.

Turn extensions off.

Retest Discord.

Re-enable extensions individually, checking Discord after each one to identify the extension interfering with it.

To clear Chrome cookies and cache, open More > Delete browsing data. Deleting cookies may sign you out of other sites that remember you.

Set Time range to All time.

Select Cookies and other site data.

Select Cached images and files.

Select Delete data.

Sign into Discord again.

In Firefox, visit Discord.

Select the padlock or shield beside the address bar.

Select Clear cookies and site data.

Reload Discord.

Sign in again.

In Safari on Mac, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data.

Select Discord’s entry.

Select Remove.

Select Done.

Reopen Discord.

Sign in again.

For a frozen, blank, or lagging desktop app display, open Discord’s User Settings > Advanced.

Turn Hardware Acceleration off. This targets rendering problems; it does not resolve a Discord outage or grant channel access.

Reinstall when the problem stays with the app

Save a clean reinstall for an official app that still fails while the same conversation works in another supported client. It resets local installation data, including settings and sign-in information, while leaving server-stored conversation history intact.

On Windows, close Discord and its tray and background processes.

Press Windows+R.

Open %appdata%.

Delete the Discord folder.

Press Windows+R again.

Open %localappdata%.

Delete its Discord folder.

Restart Windows.

Reinstall Discord from its official download page.

On macOS, quit all Discord processes.

In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder to open ~/Library/Application Support.

Remove its Discord folder if present.

Use Go > Go to Folder to open /Library/Application Support.

Remove its Discord folder if present.

Move Discord from Applications to Trash.

Empty Trash.

Restart your Mac.

Reinstall Discord from its official download page.

On iPhone, touch and hold Discord to open its menu.

Select Remove App > Delete App > Delete.

Reinstall Discord from its official App Store listing.

On Android, select Play Store > Profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > Discord > Uninstall.

Reinstall Discord from its official Google Play listing.

If you use a modified client, retest with the unmodified official Stable app or a supported browser. Discord excludes modified clients from supported bug reports.

If the official client still fails after reinstalling, report the problem with your comparison results.

Get help for a persistent failure

Open the support request form linked from Discord’s bug-reporting page. For a reproducible bug, select Bug Reporting under What can we help you with? and describe how to reproduce it, what you expected, and what happened.

Include your client and OS versions, attach evidence, and explain whether the same account and conversation worked on another client or connection. Select Submit.

On mobile, reproduce the error, then select You > upper-right cogwheel > Support > Upload Debug Logs to Discord Support. Reference that reproduction in your ticket. Uploading logs helps diagnosis; it does not repair loading by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I reset Voice & Video to fix message loading?

Discord lists Reset Voice and Video Settings in its Voice and Video Troubleshooting Guide, which covers voice, audio, and video problems. For messages that fail to load, start with the outage check, restart, and client and connection comparison above instead.

Do I need to wait an hour before trying Discord again?

Waiting a fixed hour is not a reliable fix; check Discord Status instead. During an outage, follow Discord’s recovery updates; a fixed timer does not tell you when service has recovered.

How do I leave the Discord beta on iPhone?

Open TestFlight > Discord > Stop Testing. Then install the Stable Discord app from the App Store to compare its behavior.

Does turning off Data Saver fix Discord messages on Android?

On Pixel, Data Saver primarily restricts background activity; active foreground apps already have access to mobile data. For background or resume problems, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data and enable Discord.
