To fix Chrome autofill not working, enable filling for the affected information, correct any missing or outdated saved details, and select the Chrome profile that contains them. Passwords, addresses, and payment cards have separate controls, so start with the category that fails. If those checks do not help, check extensions and updates before clearing browser data or resetting settings.

The short version

  • Check the category: Enable address or payment filling and confirm that the information is saved.
  • Check your profile: Select the profile or Google Account containing your saved details.
  • Check password controls: Review Google Password Manager or your chosen autofill provider.
  • Save cleanup for later: Check extensions and updates before clearing cookies or resetting Chrome.

Turn on autofill for the affected information

On desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Addresses and more, then turn on Save and fill addresses. For cards, open Payment methods and turn on Save and fill payment methods. If your layout uses Contact info and Payments, select the corresponding category.

On Android, open More > Settings > Autofill and passwords, choose the information category, and enable its saving and filling setting. If the parent menu is labeled Passwords and autofill, open that instead.

On iPhone or iPad, open More > Settings > Autofill and passwords, then choose Contact info or Payments and enable its saving and filling setting. Return to the form, tap the relevant field, and tap the saved information. Tap Expand at the keyboard's upper right to find or edit saved information.

Check saved details and your Chrome profile

On a computer, open More > Passwords and autofill and select the relevant category. You can also open Profile picture > Passwords and autofill. Select Add if the information is missing. Available categories depend on rollout and region.

On Android, open the information category and tap Add to enter missing details. On iPhone or iPad, tap Add in Contact info to add missing contact information.

Editing an entry replaces its saved details with your corrections. On desktop, open the entry's More menu, select Edit, and correct the information. On Android, tap an entry, correct it, and tap Save. On iPhone or iPad, select a contact entry, tap Edit, correct it, and tap Done.

On desktop, select Profile, then choose the profile containing your saved information. If account-stored information is missing, select Profile > Sign in to Chrome, enter the credentials for the account containing it, and select Next. Local passwords can also exist without Chrome sign-in.

Sign in only through Google’s own app or website, and never share a code, password, or remote access with someone who contacts you. To review which information Chrome saves to your account on desktop, open More > Settings > You and Google, select your account name, and review the information categories.

Fix missing password suggestions

Click the password field on desktop to request suggestions. If the login is missing, open More > Passwords and autofill > Google Password Manager > Add. Enter the website, username, and password, then select Save.

Editing a saved login replaces the stored details you change. To correct an existing credential, select it under Passwords, choose Edit, make your corrections, and select Save.

For a login Chrome is not offering to save, open Settings inside Google Password Manager and turn on Offer to save passwords and passkeys. You can also enter the credentials on the website, select the address-bar Password icon, and select Save. Saving a login does not guarantee Chrome will recognize every login form.

Removing a site from the declined list removes its saved declined-site entry. If the affected site appears under Declined sites and apps in Password Manager's Settings, remove it to restore saving prompts.

On Android, add a missing login through More > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Google Password Manager > Add password. On iPhone or iPad, open More > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Password Manager > Add Password. Enter the website, username, and password, then tap Save.

Complete authentication when Chrome requests it. In desktop Google Password Manager > Settings, review Use Windows Hello when filling passwords on Windows or Use your screen lock when filling passwords on Mac. Available authentication depends on your device. If the missing behavior is automatic sign-in, turn on Sign in automatically there; that control applies to supported sites and identity services.

Select the right mobile autofill provider

On Android, configure your third-party autofill service in Android before selecting it in Chrome. Selecting another service replaces Google as Chrome's autofill source. Open Chrome's More > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Autofill settings, select Autofill with Google or Autofill using another service, then tap Restart Chrome. If a managed device prevents the change, ask your administrator about provider restrictions.

If you use 1Password on Android, unlock the app, select your account or collection picture, and open Settings > Autofill > Open Settings. Select 1Password and optionally select Show filling suggestions. Then return to Chrome, select Autofill using another service, and tap Restart Chrome.

On iPhone, system password and passkey filling has a separate control from Chrome's address and card settings. Open the device's Settings > General > Autofill & Passwords, then turn on Autofill Passwords & Passkeys. Under Autofill from, turn on Google Chrome and Google.

Check payment details and form recognition

For a missing desktop payment card, open Profile > Passwords and autofill > Payment methods and select Add. Click the payment field to inspect its suggestions. If the card is saved but nothing appears, Chrome may not recognize that field, and the site owner may need to fix the form.

Editing a Wallet card changes its saved information, and account changes can appear on other signed-in devices. For an outdated Wallet card, select More > Edit in Google Wallet and correct its information there.

If Chrome displays Login not secure or Payment not secure, use a secure version of the website. Do not bypass the warning to force autofill.

On desktop, open Settings > Autofill and passwords > Payment methods and review Verify it's you to autofill payment methods and Save security codes. Set up a device screen lock if verification is unavailable. Turning off routine verification does not eliminate every security check.

Saving a replacement security code updates the stored code for that card. If the saved code is outdated, enter the new code at checkout and select Save when prompted.

Chrome can also request screen-lock, fingerprint, face, or PIN verification before filling sensitive information. Complete the requested verification to continue. Its desktop control is under More > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Autofill settings > Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info.

Where available on desktop, sign in to Chrome and open More > Settings > Autofill and passwords > Autofill settings, then turn on Smarter form understanding. This can help with form recognition, but not every form is compatible.

Check extensions that affect autofill

To investigate a possible desktop extension conflict, open More > Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn a suspected extension off and retry the form. Treat the extension as a possible cause only if changing its state changes the result.

If your autofill comes from a password-manager extension, open its Details. Review Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit and permit the affected site. For a corrupted extension, select Repair, then confirm Repair extension.

If you intentionally use your password-manager extension in Incognito, enable Allow in incognito in its details. That permission determines whether the extension can run in the Incognito window where you need it.

Reload the form and update Chrome

Reload a malfunctioning desktop form without cached content by pressing Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + R on Mac. Retry the form after it reloads. This is general page troubleshooting, so it may not resolve a problem with saved information or autofill settings.

On Windows or Mac, open More > Help > About Google Chrome and let the update check finish. Select Relaunch when offered; on Linux, use your distribution's package manager. For update controls, you can also manage automatic updates in Chrome.

On Android 10 or later, open the Play Store, select your profile icon, and open Manage apps & device. Under Updates available, find Chrome and tap Update.

On iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or later, open App Store > Profile > Available Updates, find Chrome, and tap Update. Enter your Apple ID password if requested.

On a supported Chromebook receiving updates, select the time, then open Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates. After the update downloads, select Restart in the update notification.

Clear cookies and cached files carefully

Clearing cookies and cached files deletes that website data and can sign you out of websites. On desktop, open More > Delete browsing data and choose the time range. Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files, leave unrelated categories unselected, then select Delete data.

Keep Autofill form data unselected when troubleshooting missing suggestions. Deleting that category removes local autofill entries and does not recover missing information. Cookie and cache cleanup addresses website state, so retry the affected form afterward.

Check restrictions before resetting Chrome

If controls are disabled or settings keep reverting, open More and look for Managed by your organization. On a managed installation, ask your administrator about blocked autofill categories or providers. The administrator may need to review restrictions for the affected website.

For a persistent desktop problem, select Profile > Add Chrome profile. Set up the profile, sign in to the intended account if needed, and try the affected form. Keep your original profile until its local information is accounted for; comparing the profiles can help narrow down the problem.

Resetting Chrome resets settings, extensions, and site state, while saved bookmarks and passwords remain. If you proceed, open More > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults, then select Reset settings. This resets browser settings generally rather than targeting autofill alone.
