Apple TV Family Sharing can break in a few annoying ways. Shared movies vanish, subscriptions look locked, or a family member never appears in the Apple TV app.
The fix is usually in Family settings, Purchase Sharing, Apple Account matching, or content eligibility. Start with the basics, then move down to the account and app fixes that catch the harder cases.
Start with Family Sharing setup
Family Sharing has to be created from an iPhone, iPad, or Mac before Apple TV sharing can work.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Family, tap Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions to set up the family and invite members.
On a Mac, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click your name, click Family, click Set Up, then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your Family Sharing group and invite members. Add Member is for adding people after the group already exists.
You cannot create, start, or configure Family Sharing directly in the Apple TV app or on Apple TV 4K, so use Family settings on iPhone, iPad, or Mac instead.
If Family Sharing is already set up and Apple TV still is not sharing, check the invitation next because the person may not actually be in the family group yet.
Resend the missed invitation
The most common cause is that the family member was invited but never accepted the Family Sharing invitation.
On the organizer’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Family, tap the Add Member button, then choose Create an Account for a Child or Invite People.
To resend an invitation on iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Family, tap the person’s name, then tap Resend Invitation.
On a Mac, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click Family, click the person’s name, then choose Resend Invitation.
The invited person can accept from the email or text invitation.
They can also accept on iPhone or iPad by opening Settings, tapping their name, then tapping Invitations.
On a Mac, they can open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, select Family, then follow the onscreen instructions.
Check the family group limit
Open the invitation again and check whether the Apple Account is already tied to another Family Sharing group.
Apple allows an Apple Account to be part of only one Family Sharing group at a time.
Apple also limits switching family groups to once per year.
If the person is in the wrong group and is eligible to leave, they can sign in to the Apple Account website, open the Family Sharing section, then choose Remove Account.
Family members over age 13 can use that account-removal path.
After they leave the wrong group, send a fresh invitation from Family settings on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Give the change up to 30 minutes before testing Apple TV sharing again.
Turn on Purchase Sharing
Use this when Apple TV Store movies or TV shows bought by another family member are missing. Purchase Sharing is required for shared Apple TV Store movie and TV purchases, but it is not required for eligible shared subscriptions.
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Family, then tap Purchase Sharing.
Tap your name, turn on Share My Purchases, then follow the onscreen instructions.
In Purchase Sharing, check Shared Payment Method so the family’s purchase-sharing billing is set up.
After turning it on, reopen the Apple TV app and check the shared library again after up to 30 minutes.
Match the Apple Account used for purchases
Account mismatches are a major reason Apple TV family purchases disappear.
- 1.On iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap Family, tap your name, and note the Apple Account used for Family Sharing.
- 2.Tap Apple Account and confirm the account shown there is the one whose purchases you want shared.
- 3.If it is not, tap Share using secondary Apple Account in the note under your Apple Account, enter that Apple Account email address or phone number and password, then tap Use this Apple Account.
- 4.On Mac, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click Family, click your name, click Share using secondary Apple Account in the note under your Apple Account, then click Use Different Apple Account.
- 5.Expect one switch every 90 days, and know that your family loses access to purchases and subscriptions tied to the previous Apple Account.
- 6.On Mac, open the App Store, choose Store, open Account, select Account Settings, and confirm the same Apple Account is signed in.
Rule out content that cannot be shared
The most common cause is that Family Sharing is working, but the movie, show, subscription, or purchase is not eligible to share.
Apple allows sharing for movies and TV shows from the Store in the Apple TV app, Apple TV, Apple TV channels, Apple One Family or Premier, and participating subscriptions or in-app purchases.
Do not expect Family Sharing to show hidden purchases, unavailable items, student subscriptions, individual Apple Music or Apple One plans, consumable in-app purchases, non-participating subscriptions, or school-assigned Apple School Manager content.
To share an eligible Apple TV subscription on iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap Manage Family Access, then turn on the switch next to the subscription.
For eligible App Store subscriptions, open Settings, tap Family, tap Subscriptions, open Manage Subscriptions, then turn on Share with Family.
If Share with Family is missing, that subscription is not eligible for Family Sharing.
Confirm the same country or region
Use this when the family group is set up correctly but Apple TV Store purchases still will not share across accounts. Purchase sharing requires family members to use the same Apple Account country or region.
Each person should confirm the country or region on their Apple Account.
To change it, sign in to the Apple Account website, open Personal Information, choose Country/Region, then follow the onscreen instructions.
Changing country or region while inside a Family Sharing group may be blocked.
If that happens, the person may need to leave the family group first, change the country or region, then join again.
Find the shared library on Apple TV
Open the Apple TV app on Apple TV 4K.
Open the sidebar, then choose Library.
Navigate to Family Sharing, then select the family member whose purchases you want to browse.
Choose a movie or show to play.
To go back, press the Back button or Menu button on the remote.
On iPhone or iPad, open the Apple TV app, tap the Library tab, choose Family Sharing, pick a family member, then tap the item.
Use an iPhone or iPad as a quick comparison when the Apple TV 4K library looks incomplete because availability varies by country or region and Apple TV hardware model.
Fix restrictions and app glitches
This fixes shared Apple TV content that exists but is blocked, stuck, or not refreshing.
For a child account, the organizer can open Settings on iPhone or iPad, tap Screen Time, tap the child’s name under Family, then open Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Enter the Screen Time passcode when asked.
Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games, then adjust allowed content for Movies or TV Shows.
If installs or downloads are blocked, go to iTunes & App Store Purchases, choose the blocked setting, then set it to Allow.
If a child purchase or redownload needs approval, open the Ask to Buy message or notification, choose Approve or Decline, and sign in to complete the purchase when approving.
On the Apple TV app for a smart TV, streaming device, gaming console, cable service, or satellite service, open the sidebar, choose Settings, open Restrictions, enter the passcode, then set Restrictions to Off.
If the Apple TV app still acts stuck on a non-Apple TV device, open the sidebar, go to Settings, choose Reset, then select Reset.
After resetting the Apple TV app on a non-Apple TV device, sign in again with the correct Apple Account because the reset erases accounts and configuration from the app.
On Apple TV 4K, force quit the Apple TV app by pressing the TV button twice quickly.
Select the Apple TV app, swipe up on the clickpad or touch surface, then reopen it from the Home Screen.
Restart Apple TV 4K by holding the TV button and Back or Menu button until the status light blinks rapidly.
You can also disconnect Apple TV from power, wait five seconds, then reconnect it.
Update Apple TV by going to Settings, choosing System, opening Software Updates, then selecting Update Software.
If an update is available, choose Download and Install and keep Apple TV connected and plugged in until it finishes.
Use Settings, System, Reset, then Reset only as a last resort because it erases settings and information.
For a reset plus the latest software, choose Reset and Update.
